The latest news about the Halo series of games from Microsoft

  • Call That Gratitude?

Stuntmutt has a special Sunday One One Se7en for you today – or rather, it’s for the folks who filled in for him these past two weeks. Check it out. And while you’re in that Stuntmutt state of mind (sort of like a New York state of mind, but slightly seedier, and without all the good food), check out his blog – he’s done a wonderful job of recapping the last couple of weeks… wedding stuff, cool shirts, user-submitted strips, and some hilarious blackmail material on Jillybean and c0ld vengeance. Those two can’t hold their liquor, it seems…

  • Move Along

Execution1013, of Clan 0kinawa, turned in ‘Move Along’ – a Halo music video set to reproduce the real video created by The All American Rejects. Great quality, nice syncing – the MPRRS liked it, so give it a look! WMP9 version, 61.5 mb, or QuickTime version, 62.2 mb.

  • Kill Phil

BlueHunter has been submitting versions of ‘Kill Phil’ to the MPRRS for quite some time – it took a while for reviewers to get over the fact that the film is in French, with English subtitles, but along the way, he’s refined it into a really polished piece of work. It’s (in the words of the creator) “a very free adaptation of Kill Bill” – and he ain’t just whistlin’ dixie. That said, it’s a really interesting piece – if you can handle the 100 mb download (it’s 16 minutes long), grab a copy! I had trouble converting this to WMP9 format from its original .AVI – so your choices this time around are a 98.2 mb .AVI (I’m not sure which codec) or a 94.4 mb QuickTime. This is a great example of how the MPRRS can help a filmmaker turn out a great piece – if they don’t give up!

  • Stained Glass Gorilla

Spartan Jag pointed out a small news story on Bungie.net – a forumgoer over there has posted some pictures of a piece of stained glass he made in the image of the Webmaster. Cool!

  • Halo Babies Returns

We got word from mrsmiley that while there might not be ‘official’ strips coming out any time soon, Halo Babies is back open for business; they’ve got a couple of art forums set up to encourage the development of Halo artwork. Check it out!

  • HGN Preview – for everybody

The Halo Graphic Novel preview hit comic stores in the US a few days ago (Wednesday was the release date); I hadn’t realized this, but it was supposed to be a freebie. My local comic store was charging $.99/copy (not much, but when you want to grab enough for your buddies in Europe…), and comic stores elsewhere were doing similar things. Our policy on scans is that we will not put them up until the magazine they’re from is off the shelves – because we’re not interested in eating into anyone’s legitimate profits. In this case, however, it was supposed to be free to begin with. So we’re making it free. The scans aren’t super-high-res – but they’re big enough to read, and that should be a start, no? Go read. Or download. This stuff rocks.

  • Marine Sassy? Really?

Marty, taking pity on us poor fans, posted a list of all the individual characters in Halo 2, and the actors who played them. We’ve added this list to our Names behind the Voices page – thanks, Marty! (At some point in the not-too-distant future, there’ll probably be some reclassification going on in our Halo 2 Dialogue Databank.)

  • Knowledge

Dan Chosich put together a pretty cool montage of his E3/D3 (Dean’s post-E3 lanfest) experience; it does a wonderful job of showing the insanity that is E3, and has a few Halo-related clips from the lanfest to boot. Two versions are available – a ‘small’ version, 87 mb, QuickTime format, 640×360… and an HDV version, 128 mb, 1280×720, H.264 encoding (be sure your computer is up to this before grabbing it). Presentation is spectacular.

  • Halo 2 still on top on XBL

Major Nelson posted the Top Live Games lists again, broken out by platform (Xbox/Xbox 360)… but also pointed out that on a combined list, Halo 2 would be number 1, followed by all 10 Xbox 360 titles. Thanks, Smandon.

  • VGL in Philly – Halo (and more) Onstage

A reminder – Video Games Live will be onstage in Philadelphia tonight, with lots and lots of extra goodies (including the chance to meet your favorite Halo soundtrack composers). tyguy101a, from the RvB community, swung by to invite people as well – if you’re in the area, there are still tickets left… go!

  • Xbox 360 Camera and Halo 3?

insaneidiot found this article that had been linked off the Xbox.com forums – it’s a discussion of the Xbox Live Vision Camera, built by GestureTek, coming out this fall. The company that made it, according to the article

“earlier hinted something about the camera being put into use in Halo 3 gaming wherein once a player turns his/her head to a particular direction, the in-game camera will turn respectively, paving the way to innovative gameplay.”

Some googling turned up the info that this claim was made during their presentation at E3 this year (sounds like they were down in Kentia Hall…). Until you hear more from Bungie, this is a rumor, nothing more – someone’s idea of the potential of the device.

  • QsK King’s First Montage Trailer

QsK King submitted a trailer for the first montage from QsKGlobal.com – the MPRRS liked it. This is the rebirth of someone who was banned for plagiarism a while back; it warms me to see solid, non-stolen work being produced. (There are some very nice editing touches in this vid.) It’s short – only 1:23, under 20 mb in both flavors – grab a copy! WMP9 version is 19.3 mb, QuickTime version is 18.5 mb.

  • When The Lights Went Out In Kirkland

A power loss at Bungie didn’t stop Frankie from doing a Weekly Update– although it did end up necessitating an ASCII Mister Chief.

This week’s update is more about Halo 2 playlists and music than about Halo 3 though, as it has some notes about the next PLAY! concert in Philadelphia as well as the major matchmaking playlist changes that are coming up.

As usual, we’ve archived this week’s update on our Halo 3 Weekly Updates page in our Halo 3 Articles collection.

  • Memo 2 Bungie

Davidgojr put together ‘Memo 2 Bungie: Halo 2 BS Montage’ – a look at some of the humorous stuff that can happen on Xbox Live. Humorous, that is, if it’s not happening to YOU. It’s one of those ‘you gotta laugh so you don’t cry’ things. Nicely filmed, and the MPRRS reviewers said yea, so grab a copy in WMP9 or QuickTime formats. (It’s rather large – almost 110 mb – so be warned.)

  • Tasty Weekly Update

The Weekly Update is up over at Bungie.net, even though they had a major power outage today (probably that enormous bank of cooling fans in the back going rampant) – info about Video Games Live (and PLAY!, a different series altogether, though you wouldn’t know it from the way Frankie wrote it up tonight), plus much more about playlist changes, and some really tantalizing stuff about an upcoming documentary short. And a really cool ASCII Mister Chief. Go read! (Or read it in our Weekly Update Archive, where it’s actually formatted better. OMG it’s update 77!)

  • RT: Director Faceplate Design Contest

Many of you saw the shots of our new 360 setup in the interview we did with Bungie. If you didn’t, here they are:

As you can see, our controllers and our Xboxes are a lot easier to tell apart now that we have cool new colored controllers…

  • June 2006 Matchmaking Playlist Update

Looks like the matchmaking update is coming soon and they let us know some preliminary details. Thanks Jburton for finding this and posting in the forums!
