The Destiny Letters
Ex-Bungie Community Guy Matt Soell, who was with the company during the early Halo days, has penned a response to some of the complaints about Destiny’s reveal being more “hype” than “substance”. It’s well worth a read, so please go take a look (Warning: little bit of NSFW language. No images, but some imagery.)
If you ask me, though, the crux of the issue is right here:
For years now, even before Destiny was a rumor, people have been calling for more transparency and less hype from Bungie. If a few pieces of concept art and a YouTube video are “hype,” it’s only because Bungie’s process has made less feel like more. They do not deluge the press or their fans in an antiseptic wash of tedious data. Anyone can do that. Bungie wants your entry into this world to be an experience unto itself.
Soell makes a good point; the Destiny reveal was not a planned press event watered down; it was an extension of the Cortana Letters-type experience to the mainstream gaming press. Looks like not all of them had as much fun as some of the fans (myself included) did.

Revisiting a 10-year-old talk
Wow, was THIS a blast from the past… in more ways than one! BOLL stopped by (!!!) to point out that a 2003 GDC talk by Jaime Griesemer, Marty O’Donnell, and Mat Noguchi (and Hamilton Chu!) was made available in video form. Back in 2006, Gamasutra released the audio, and soon after Jaime provided us with the slides… but this is the first time the video has been made available for free. Go watch!(Louis Wu 14:50:16 UTC)

It’s Your Destiny… Maybe
Ben Kuchera at the Penny Arcade Report seems optimistic about the possibilities for a PC version of Destiny. That’s good, I suppose, given the number of people threatening dire consequences to Bungie on Twitter if they don’t.
IGN’s commentary around the ViDoc reveal was very pessimistic about the possibility, saying Bungie would only mention current and next-gen consoles, but Bungie’s Pete Parsons has given PC owners reason to hope:
The interesting part is we, from the ground up, from the very beginning, we have made sure that [Destiny] can be on multiple platforms,” Parsons assured me. “It’s one thing to say it, it’s another to design and actually architect for it, which we’ve absolutely done.
So there you have it: definite maybe.

Community Member of the Week: Greenskull
Every Monday, we feature a community member who does one or more of the following things: routinely goes above and beyond for their fellow forum members, is a positive and active member of the community, and/or sends me mass amounts of cat pictures. This week our Community Member of the Week is Greenskull. Read a little more about him below, then hit his profile to see why he loves emerald-colored craniums!

From Greenskull:
I’m Greenskull, but my friends call me Greenskull.
I make the Green’s Machines series on Halo Waypoint which you can check out here on the site or on Halo Waypoint on your console! I also make YouTube videos and run the gaming forum ReadyUpLive.
Ever since Halo 1, I’ve been a huge fan. When I got the original Xbox, my first game was Halo and I instantly fell in love. I’ve been very active in the Bungie community in the past, but now 343 and Waypoint are my new people. They don’t come any friendlier!
I play a lot of other games, too, but my all-time favorites are the Half-Life series, Portal, Saint’s Row, Elder Scrolls, and the classics like Doom, Duke Nukem, and Quake.
I came up with Greenskull when I was quite young. Back in Team Fortress Classic, I was setting up my character for online play. In TFC, you can choose a spray paint image and a color. My favorite image was Chuckskull and my favorite color was green. I then stared at the “Username” box and it hit me: Greenskull. It stuck ever since.
My favorite music artists are Linkin Park, 30h!3, All Time Low, Marianas Trench, Hot Chelle Rae, Theory of a Deadman, Cobra Starship, Sum 41, Billy Talent, Barenaked Ladies, and a lots of others. I like fun, happy music.
So yeah, that’s me! You’ll be a seeing me around lots so get to know me! Feel free to send me a message over Xbox Live or on the forums and we can game sometime!

Halo 4 Matchmaking Update: 2.18.13

This week, Spartan Ops continues with episode 10, the final episode of Season 1, which contains five new Spartan Ops missions. Go play!
We have also launched our premiere competitive playlist, Team Throwdown. For the full details of this playlist and the game types offered, see the launch settings thread. We look forward to hearing your feedback on this playlist – be sure to pop into the Team Throwdown Feedback thread in the War Games Feedback Section after you’ve played some matches.
Other updates include reducing the score limit across the Team Snipers playlist from 60 kills to 50 kills (or 500 points) to account for the fact that instant respawn is disabled. Also, Shutout has been added to the rotation in the SWAT playlist. Lastly, the Crimson DLC playlist has been removed from the rotation in preparation for the upcoming map pack, but Crimson DLC maps will continue to appear throughout various Matchmaking playlists.
