  • Quotes And Notable Notes From Bungie’s Brute Video

    Brute Chieftain

Since some HBO forumgoers were kind enough to hold open the thread for me, I’m now morally obligated to deliver the goods on the Brute documentary. Given that it is longer and more up-front with its new content than the TV ad, I think a frame by frame analysis, in most places, is unwarranted, so instead I thought I would cherry-pick a few notable quotations or bits of information, and add my own commentary.

  • Brute Vidoc

    7 minutes

    From Bungle

Bungie’s started making video documentaries, which they have shortened to “Vidocs,” about… well, stuff. They’re professional, and are similar to the FilmOasis stuff we have seen before. This specific one is about the role brutes will play in Halo 3, and it shows some campaign footage, and a bunch of sandbox footage. Absolutely worth the download.

On a more personal note, I got into a mild motorcycle accident, and broke my hand. I couldn’t type for a while, so that’s why there haven’t been as many videos as there could be. To make up for it, I’ll stick a classic machinima vid up tomorrow.

On an even more personal note, Mintz sucks. [Edit by Mintz: Yes.]

Also, I’m going to up the bitrate on the iPod movie next time, and see if that makes it better.

    PSP – 31.4MB
    Zune – 12.4MB
    iPod – 12MB

  • Brute Doc Analysis

    by

    in
Mark MacDonald, of GameVideos.com, gave us a heads-up about a new analysis video they’ve posted, picking apart the Brute Vidoc in minute detail. Downloadable versions are in the hundreds of megabytes, or you can stream it on their site. Looks like a thread has started on our forum – some folks are amused (or unhappy) about certain assumptions made by the GV guys… see what you think!(Louis Wu 22:54:34 UTC)

  • More Veegie Art

    by

    in
In a Rampancy.net article about the Normal Mapping article at HaloDev, Narcogen noted another cool image by Veegie, over at DeviantART – go take a look, it’s great!(Louis Wu 19:04:30 UTC)

  • Rank Honesty

    by

    in
Over at Tied the Leader, there’s not a lot of new content this week (it IS a holiday week, after all), but there’s a thought-provoking article on rank, and what it means to most of us. Check it out! Thanks, XerxdeeJ.(Louis Wu 17:30:27 UTC)

  • Another Way into the Beta

    by

    in
Interesting. Over at Joystiq, there’s a note about an ad in the latest issue of Gamepro magazine – if you buy the upcoming game Crackdown (specially marked boxes only) for $60, you also get a Halo 3 Beta invite. (Joystiq’s cynical take is that you’re paying $60 for the invite, and getting a free copy of Crackdown… but you can think of it any way you like.) Lots of folks noticed this – looks like Jonathan Rivas was first, via email last night.(Louis Wu 16:26:00 UTC)

  • Not So Normal Maps

    Abnormal Mapping

HaloDev has put up the first of in a series of “Feature Focus” articles. This one, by Talin, is accompanied by a very complex render done by Talin and Veegie and covers the technique of normal mapping to add the appearance of detail to textured polygons. Veegie also produced another, more sedate image of an ODST perched high over a Covenant-invaded cityscape.

  • Xbox Live Matchmaking Features Unavailable

    Xbox Live

Xbox Live is telling you to walk away from the television set and spend time with your friends and family in the real world this holiday season. At least, that’s the message one might infer from the fact that for several hours now, subscribers can connect to the services to browse the Marketplace or use voice chat, but not play games. Apparently even the single-player features of certain Live-aware games, like Gears of War, are being affected, with users suggested to remove the ethernet cable or wireless adapter from their Xboxes and Xbox 360 consoles to fix it.

Major Nelson’s blog acknowledges the problem and that the Xbox Live team is working on it.

UPDATE: Some users reported that they can get on XBL now, and Major Nelson’s blog has the following update:

I just heard from the Ops team…and we are all set now. They are debriefing now…so I’ll see if I can get anything out of e to share on my show this week.

“e” is a member of the XBL team and a sometimes-guest on Nelson’s weekly podcast.

Halo 3 Beta Invites Packaged With Crackdown

Trakan, a moderator at the Cheap Ass Gamer forum, has posted scans of an ad for the upcoming Xbox 360 game, Crackdown, in Gamepro magazine.

According to the scan, “specially marked boxes” of Crackdown will include an invitation to the Halo 3 multiplayer beta. This seems to be the first sighting in North America of a sure-fire way to get into the beta test. In Europe, a limited number of guaranteed spots were available, whereas in North America, fans were allowed to register freely for a “chance” for a slot, with selections to be made at a later date.

  • HaloDev Feature Focus – Normal Mapping

    by

    in
HaloDev has posted a ‘Feature Focus’ article – the first in a series of articles that will highlight various features of the upcoming Prometheus tool they’ve been working on for a while. This one looks at Normal Mapping (a variant of bumpmapping), and how Bungie uses it – and it has a fantastic example put together by Veegie. Check it out!(Louis Wu 15:40:42 UTC)

  • Warmness on the Soul, and movie administrivia

    by

    in
bryboy remix sent us a link to a movie he’s made that’s being hosted by mythica.org; it’s a music video, set to Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘Warmness on the Soul‘ (WMP9, 66 mb). I’m not sure I know what’s going on in it – but it’s pretty; nice camera angles, interesting effects. I’d like to take this opportunity to explain what’s going on with our own movie hosting; the recoding of the MPRRS got backed up in December because Cybrfrk found himself on an extended trial during jury duty. He’ll be back on the job to finish the new features up in the next few weeks; we’ll be back online in January sometime, if all goes well. In the meantime, we may offer hosting to movies we see that really impress us, but if you have a movie with its own hosting (mythica or elsewhere), your best bet is to post a link on our forum. It’s from there that I’ll pull movies that I think we can host. Please don’t email us with your links – post them on our forum. (That way, even if I don’t get to it, the forum crowd will see it – and might give you feedback about it.) Thanks!(Louis Wu 15:39:24 UTC)

  • And Do They Drink Capuchino?

  • A Travesty Against Nature – but oh so cool

    by

    in
Elnea wrote to point out a creation so cool it’s hot – hot pink, that is. She’s done a boatload of work to add Spartan Armor to… Barbie. Yes, Barbie. (Image is just under 200k.) She’s got removable helmet bits (she needs them, because her head is so big that when the helmet is on, she can’t move her head), and modifications that include the following mixed media: acrylic, mache, synthetic fiber, ceramic. Next up – a GI Joe jeep modded to function as a warthog… if you’ve got an RvB account, swing by and tell her how awesome this is.(Louis Wu 13:52:58 UTC)

  • Halo news important in 2006, says IGN

    by

    in
Yesterday, Sniping Ajax pointed out that IGN posted their 2006 wrapup video – top 10 gaming news items from the past year. Halo made number 10, mostly on the strength of the X06 info (Halo Wars, Peter Jackson’s new stuff) plus news of the upcoming Halo 3.(Louis Wu 13:45:40 UTC)
