• Podtacular deals: free game trades and credits at goozex.com!

I was recently contacted by the founders of goozex.com, the game trading site. They noticed that a lot of their members were from here, so they wanted to offer Podtacular members a special deal at goozex for trading in games. Use the coupon code podtacular-2007 for 5 free trades and 100 free credits after the first trade! Read on for a quick explanation of how it works.

Anyone else have old games lying around that they don’t play? Want to trade them in for games you want? With a selection of over 18,000 games and a point system to accurately rate the value of your games, this is way better than gamestop.

Once the goozex guys got in touch with me I signed up to check it out. For every trade you need two things: one trade credit and enough points (goozex currency) to get the game. You can get points by trading in games you own. This is a great system that makes games a lot more accessible than some other game trading sites out there. It also makes it so you don’t have to worry over whether you’ll get your promised game back.

First thing you’ll want to do with your beefed-up podtacular account is trade in some games for credits so you can get your first game. What you do is post games you want to trade in on a list on the site. When there’s a match, they send you the address to send it to (you can accept or decline it). Once they get it, you get points added to your account. On top of that, the podtacular coupon gets you 100 free points just for trading in your first game!

So after this you’ll want to get some games yourself of course. They have a cool wishlist system going where you get in line for the next available game you want. Pretty soon you’ll be notified that a game is on the way. Normally you’d be charged a buck for each of these but you get 5 freebies with the podtacular code.

Hope you guys enjoy the deal. Keep an eye on the forums, the founders are going to stop by to say hi and answer any questions we might have. Just so you know, Goozex is the favorite game trading site of CheapAssGamer.com, a HUGE gaming community with a cool podcast.

  • Where Xbox Meets Lunchbox

JeBr0nie found a nice article in the Washington Post – it looks at companies that are putting game consoles in break rooms (and two of their three examples involve Halo). Wow… a company that encourages its employees to play Halo, on company equipment! Nice!(Louis Wu 17:45:23 UTC)

  • I’m into Catan on XBL Arcade

    Catan

Catan is a popular board game in Europe. According to Wikipedia, some people have called it the “killer app” for board games. It is also popular on MSN Games. Catan is now an XBOX Live Arcade title. The trial version is free and will offer almost an hour of gameplay. The full version costs 800 points ($10) to unlock.

I have noticed that quite a few people on my buddy list have been playing Catan. I decided to check it out yesterday. I ended up playing for several hours. I bought the full version of the game after my second trail game.

I would describe Catan as a blend of Civilization, Go Fish, and Craps. It’s like Civilization in that you start with a board of empty land in front you. Each play can place settlements, cities, and roads on the land which is divided into hexagons. Each hexagon has a resource that it produces (wool, ore, wood, brick, or wheat).

Catan is like Craps in that each hexagon has a number assigned to it. When you roll the two dice, players with cities and settlements on the edge of the hexagon of the number rolled will get resources (cards).

Catan is like Go Fish in that you can trade those resources (cards) with other players. Need some wool to build your city? I’ve got some extra sheep that we could trade.

BTW: Catan is also like Craps in that if you roll a “7”, you can have a big reward (steal away a resource from a player and prevent a hexagon from producing resources) or a huge loss (being forced to discard X number of resources).

The gameplay is very deep. I definitely need to play the single-player version of the game two or three times to get the hang of it. Even then, you may not learn all of the rules.

There’s a lot of replay value in this game because you can’t master it. The random placement of the numbers or resources and the rolling of the dice introduce uncertainty and cause all players to continually adjust.

Because you can score points in a variety of ways, there are different paths to victory depending on the “hand you were dealt” so to speak.

The game can be won by accruing 10 points (perhaps you can adjust this to a higher number). 10 points will take 1-2 hours to attain. You gain points by building settlements, cities, and by achieving certain goals (building the longest connected road or having the biggest army, for example).

What makes the game fun is that the game is usually in reach for everyone. You play to just 10 points and it’s easy for everyone to get 3-5 points. Battling for the remaining points is the challenge as more roads are built and more settlements and cities crowd the board.

Besides the randomness of the dice, another thing that can keep the game in reach for all players is that anyone can lose points. For instance, only one person gets the 2-point bonus for having the longest road. So, if you are behind, build the longest road and gain points for yourself while taking away points from someone else.

The game also appears to be in reach at all times because you can’t damage anyone unless you opt to not trade with them or send a robber (rolling a “7”) to their hex (preventing it from producing resources) and taking one resource. You can’t necessarily “own” a player. You can’t over power them.

The graphics are great, but they don’t have to be. What is surprising is the UI and the tutorials. The UI is very well laid out. It makes playing the game really easy. Stats and information are nicely tucked away in easy to access menus. The tutorials for the game are interactive and well thought out. The game did an amazing job at teaching me the in’s and out’s of the game — adapting to what I did on in the game to teach me moves I should do. Also, the game audio will put you into a trance.

The game supports AI, so I can play against 3 other computer players if none of my friends are online. The game also supports online multi-player, matchmaking, stats, and leaderboards.

Is it worth $10? It was for me. I was looking for a simple game like this to play before the HALO 3 beta.

  • Omicron and Bad Soda

Last night, we got word from Sodagod that Machine Enema had released two new movies. Both were created for the Halogrid Affinity Machinima Challenge – they contain footage ONLY from Tombstone and Desolation. They are, as usual for Machine Enema creations, superbly well-constructed, with fantastic visuals, top-notch voice acting, and wonderful plots. The first is ‘Omicron’, and takes a different look at some characters he’s worked with before… the second is ‘Bad Soda’, and made me laugh – a lot. You can grab Omicron in either WMP9 format (57.3 mb) or QuickTime format (64.4 mb) – and the same with Bad Soda (QuickTime format is 54.1 mb, WMP9 format is 47.2 mb). Once again, in case I wasn’t clear before – both of these are absolutely worth the download. (Louis Wu 13:30:43 UTC)

  • Ceramic Halo 3 Helmet

Over at Bungie.net, WOZMAN84 posted pictures of a ceramic Master Chief helmet he created for a class; folks suggested he point this out to us, and I’m glad they did. Should look great on the shelf!(Louis Wu 12:55:20 UTC)

  • Halo Tattoo

JapAniMan stopped by yesterday to point out his new tattoo – Halo lovin’ at its best! Nice work.(Louis Wu 12:52:25 UTC)

  • Game Head – Special Halo 3 Episode

On Saturday, we got mail from Tim Sweeny, telling us to check out the latest Game Head – the end of it mentions that they’re going to be at Bungie’s headquarters next week for a big Halo 3 show. I didn’t follow up, because I knew that the ‘big show’ wasn’t going to be in Kirkland… it was going to be in San Francisco and New York. (I thought Game Head was just trying to cash in on the upcoming publicity.) However, this morning, Cocopjojo pointed out info about this show on our forum – it’s the TIMING that lines up, but the show itself should be pretty fun, they did a bunch of interviews at Bungie’s headquarters, and they’re releasing it to coincide with the press event this Friday. Good stuff! Update: for folks who just want to see the Bungie teaser, we’re hosting local copies – 18 seconds, 2.3 mb, in either QuickTime or WMP9 formats.(Louis Wu 12:48:21 UTC)

  • The Riot 47

Sigafoos points out that The Riot 47 is ready for download – half an hour (12 mb) of clan stuff, PraetoriaGuard mocking, and Bungie news. And PraetoriaGuard mocking, again.(Louis Wu 17:40:36 UTC)

  • Longsword, Seagull, and In Amber Clad

RVideo spent some time modding New Mombasa – making longswords flyable (along with In Amber Clad’s bridge). The end result is pretty cool to look at; you can download it at Halo3Forum.com (WMP9 format, 85.7 mb). For those of you hating WMP9, we’re hosting a QuickTime version (72.2 mb) – very artistically staged! Give it a look.(Louis Wu 15:00:57 UTC)

  • Wafers made of plated titanium

Ducain was out in the middle of nowhere last weekend – and ran across an interestingly-named church (even the FONT looks familiar). Makes me wanna go fishing…(Louis Wu 14:30:51 UTC)

  • Simultaneous discoveries?

Heh – yesterday, we mentioned some posted, but unlinked pictures darthbob found on bungie.net – the thread got bigger, and a number of other shots were discovered (including a pair of mongoose pics. This morning, when I got up, Google news pointed me to TalkXbox, where an article posted today shows off all 5 new shots found yesterday. I can’t imagine they’d just post these without attribution if they found them here, so I’m gonna say congratulations for the simultaneous discoveries!(Louis Wu 14:23:15 UTC)

  • THX’ers on front page of Joystiq.com

Oculus and the Reverend LAN at rapture's

Joystiq wonders why there aren’t many online GoW games happening anymore. Perhaps that’s because they are LANning GoW in my dining room?

If you fire up Joystiq.com, you’ll notice an image of some THX’ers playing GoW. Yup. That’s a picture taken from the H1 LAN we held at my place earlier in the year. GG to Oculus and Reverend (and their handsome crowns) for making the shot.

The writer at Joystiq wonders why they are having a hard time finding GoW games online. Looks like some folks on the Epic forums are wondering the same thing. Is there a glitch in the XBOX Live service for GoW? Is the game not that popular anymore?

  • Vote for the Ghost!

Go vote! One of Bungie.net’s members – xXb1az3d CatXx – and a team of his buddies have a wild card entry in the Red Bull Flugtag, an annual event where silly, reckless or suicidal people decide to launch hastily built contraptions off of a wall in an effort to get them to float across a river.

  • Waking

Alex Schwartz sent us word of ‘Waking‘, a 4-part machinima he and some friends created for a machinima class at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. It uses several different game engines (Halo 2, Half-Life 2, Second Life, and Unreal 2004), as well as outside effects added with Maya – the end result is pretty impressive. Running time is about 30 minutes, split between the four acts. Storyline has some Ender’s Game, some Matrix, some Terminator… fun stuff. Go check it out! (He started a forum thread here, if you’d like to discuss it.)(Louis Wu 20:03:40 UTC)
