The latest news about the Halo series of games from Microsoft

  • Follow the Fleet

Edgeworks has posted Episode 6 of the Heretic – some amazing CG work on the space scenes, and a powerful storyline twist. Top-notch machinima – go watch! Thanks to clippit for the heads-up.(Louis Wu 13:59:15 UTC)

  • Mister Cupcake, revealed

Jared Rea points out that his girlfriend photo-blogged the making of the Mister Chief cupcakes shown in last night’s Weekly Update – yum!(Louis Wu 13:58:47 UTC)

  • Always gotta be careful with fanatics.

Heh – look what darthbob found on bungie.net. 😉 (We’ve grabbed local copies, in case they mysteriously vanish again…)(Louis Wu 13:44:11 UTC)

  • Go to the Airport

Over at Red vs Blue, Burnie released Director’s Commentary for Episode 96 – it’s almost more of a podcast than actual commentary on the piece, but there IS some cool stuff about how various shots were put together. (They’re definitely getting fancier in their machinima techniques as the series winds down to a close…) Enjoyable, even though the RvB stuff is minimal. (Louis Wu 13:22:52 UTC)

  • H2V and Dedicated Servers

The Hired Gun crew has put up a new blog entry, this time discussing dedicated servers for Halo 2 Vista. (The DS doesn’t need Vista – only Windows Server 2003. This should help tremendously in finding a host that can handle one.) There’s lots of other good info in there – so give it a read!(Louis Wu 12:41:40 UTC)

  • Crazy Secrets Week

As usual, Friday night brought a Bungie Weekly Update last night – but I went to see Spiderman 3 instead. (Decent movie, but a bit too sappy in places. I guess that’s what you get when you’re trying to wrap up a storyline. Amazing effects, no matter WHAT else was going on.) The weekly update ALSO talks about effects – the first third waxes poetic about the quality of the ingame cinematics, and let me tell you, I’m dying to see one now. There’s also good info about the status of the Blastacular Map Pack (it should be available to almost everyone, finally, and they’re going to be fixing the geometry errors posthaste), a bunch of cool dev tidbits, some positive news about the Friends and Family program (which now has an official start date), and a welcome to Luke Smith. And some funky Mister Chief stuff. Go see what’s there! (Or read it here, in our Weekly Update Archive…(Louis Wu 12:30:17 UTC)

  • Official Podtacular Xbox 360 Theme

Recently, I was playing around with some ideas and cooked up this nifty official Podtacular Xbox 360 theme background for the whole community to use. It’s designed for widescreen displays at full 1080p resolution, so download and display it proudly in your Dashboard!

UPDATE: I’ve now included a version for older televisions at 480p fullscreen resolution.

To download the image, just right-click on the attached files below and save the file to your computer. There are several ways to get it to your 360, including copying the file to a USB hard drive or iPod/MP3 player, burning it to a CD or even streaming it across your network via Media Center/Connect 360. Once you see it in the Photos section of your 360 Dashboard (in the Media blade), find the image and press X to “Apply as Background” and you’re all set!

Oh, and since I know we have some really good and enthusiastic artists in the Podtacular community, I’d like to see if anyone else has some awesome ideas for 360 themes. We recently had a desktop wallpaper contest, and if there’s enough interest, maybe we could have one for 360 themes! Whaddya say?

  • Seventh Column back online. So is our old group.

Recently the Seventh Column came back online. You recall that Bungie.net got a makeover. The old THX group is still on there.

A lot of information has been lost over the years. It looks like a lot of accounts have been deleted and that most all of the members didn’t port over. I think some information was lost in the port.

Oh well. That’s why we run our own stuff.

If thx.com ever goes down, we can always go to the THX site on the Seventh Column if we need to make announcements.

You can view the chapter at http://www.bungie.net/fanclub/thx/Group/GroupHome.aspx

  • Bungie Weekly Update

This week there is a LOT of information. You pretty much have to read this one. Seriously.

  • Halo 3 Press Event – you might be able to go

Last week, we mentioned a ‘press event’ happening on May 11 – very few details. Yesterday, Gamerscoreblog released their latest podcast – and in it they’ve made a pretty amazing offer:

“…one in New York, and one in San Francisco, for Halo 3. They’re both press events, but we are going to try and open the door a little bit for some community to attend. If some of you live in the New York or San Francisco area, and maybe you have a blog, or a fansite, and you’re interested in checking it out, send an email to gsblog at microsoft.com and we’ll see if we can get you in.”

I’m not saying go out and start a blog today… I’m just saying if you fit their criteria, this might be something you want to go to. Thanks to RevDotNed for the heads-up.(Louis Wu 17:30:29 UTC)

  • Time To Bail?

Some people have been expressing unhappiness about spoilers from leaks of Halo 3 gameplay. Stuntmutt thinks he might have a solution, in today’s One One Se7en.(Louis Wu 16:32:07 UTC)

  • H2V on the cheap (if you’re Canadian)

If you live in Canada, boesman found a deal for you – $20 off the cover price of Halo 2 Vista, at Futureshop. (Louis Wu 14:27:29 UTC)

  • Podtacular 111

Big Goalie Dan pointed out that Podtacular 111 has been released – 60 mb, 90 minutes, focuses on leaked Halo 3 video stuff. That’s about as close as we’re gonna get to the leaks, ourselves…(Louis Wu 14:26:18 UTC)

  • New Shin Guards for Mjolnir Outfit

James Falcon sent us a few pictures of the Shin Guards that go with his Mjolnir Armor outfit – you can find them on his Rifle/Armor page. Gettin’ there!(Louis Wu 14:23:33 UTC)

  • Lithium 1v1 Montage

Z pointed out Lithium’s 1v1 montage over at Halo3forum.com – 8.5 minutes, 155 mb, nice editing, and some sick sticks and snipes. The use of fusion cores as placement engines is great – haven’t seen much of that before. Check it out! (Louis Wu 13:56:54 UTC)

  • Friday’s Fan Fiction

Fan Fiction offerings this week are slim – only 4 pieces. Shouldn’t take you long to read!(Louis Wu 13:49:25 UTC)

  • Speck is here!

I received this email from Brick’s brother this morning:

    Quote:

Spencer Jacob was born last night at 10:54. 7 lbs, 4 oz and 19 inches long.

Everyone’s doing well and resting and recovering right now.

    Congratulations Brick.

  • Shadowrun beta stats revealed

Pretty cool. FASA has released a ton of stats they collected during the beta. (They actually collected from pretty complex stats like “distance bullets traveled” and other complex stats).

    Kill to Death ratio stats

    		Gamer Tag Kills Deaths K:D
    1 EnragedGnome 4871 1257 3.88
    2 Crymson Omega 2176 575 3.78
    3 DarckDrizzt 618 216 2.86
    4 EA 2980 1098 2.71
    5 Fall360 195 72 2.71
    6 KarmicMonk 8099 3038 2.67
    7 tsfreaks 2675 1050 2.55
    8 xUnknown Datax 1901 768 2.48
    9 Xion89 3509 1420 2.47
    10 goku2057 3942 1688 2.34
    60 synide 1070 628 1.70
    98 THX Oculus 718 482 1.49

You’ll notice that Gnome and I are at the top of the Top 100 Kill/Death ratio stat. I think it’s neat to know that Gnome, Xion, and Goku all live about 3 hours from Huntsville. I don’t know about the rest of the guys in the top 10. Oculus also made the Top 100 K/D ratio list with a respectable 1.49:1 K/D ratio. jayWHY?

    Time spent playing Shadowrun

Gamer Tag Days Hours Minutes Seconds
    1 Are U Dead Yet 8 4 31 20
    24 goku2057 3 5 5 17
    25 EnragedGnome 3 4 6 20
    47 EA 2 6 44 34

I actually thought I would have played more than that. 50-something hours isn’t THAT much Shadowrun for a 3 to 4 month beta.

    Longest rang kill

    	                Gamer Tag Weapon Distance (Meters)
    1 Dragondemi Pistol 146.52
    2 Ollie Cromwell SMG 139.42
    3 B4M Bloody Life Sniper 123.77
    4 Quidam18 Sniper 115.25
    5 xBETA 420x Sniper 110.42
    6 PowerRory Sniper 108.80
    7 Xx d04 xX Sniper 108.45
8 THE MLG PUCKETT Sniper 105.43
    9 EA Sniper 104.84
    10 mfed3 Rifle 102.43

So, I had a long Sniper shot. No big deal. But look at the longest range kill in the game. It was done with a Pistol. Nice D.

Note that this is probably the last of the stats reporting. FASA has decided that reporting stats encourages cheating. You’ll never know your TrueSkill ranking. They won’t be publishing leaderboards.

I think that’s a great decision. A game shouldn’t be about leaderboards. It caused a lot of cheating in HALO 2. Being a 40 or 50 in HALO 2 didn’t mean anything because so many people cheated to get there.

  • Portable lifts and turrets in H3

Should make for some interesting physics experiments.

How do you think they will impact gameplay though?
