The latest news about the Halo series of games from Microsoft

  • An Endless Abyss-esque Imagination

GamingTV has put up an interview with Machine Enema’s SodaGoD – go read how he got into Halo machinima in the first place, and what drives him to make great vids. Thanks, trigger119.(Louis Wu 21:00:51 UTC)

  • Xboxyde talk to Crackdown Producer

Xboxyde has interviewed Phil Wilson, Producer of Crackdown – go read what he has to say about the inclusion of the Halo 3 Beta. (And a ton of other stuff about Crackdown, of course.) Thanks, Coffin Joe.(Louis Wu 20:49:03 UTC)

  • Tearjerker.

So last week Jen Taylor was at Bungie, recording dialogue. (And this week, according to Cybrfrk, who heard an interview with Pete Stacker on his local radio station, Stacker was there, doing the same.) Stuntmutt riffed on some of Frankie’s commentary in today’s One One Se7en… poor Jen.(Louis Wu 16:59:20 UTC)

  • Halo 3 Beta FAQ

It’s a little later than we thought it would be, because it turned out to need more approval, at more levels, than anyone had expected – but the Halo 3 Beta FAQ that KP promised a couple of days ago went live early this morning (thanks, goatrope). Go read it to get answers to the most common questions Bungie’s been seeing about this program.(Louis Wu 15:15:56 UTC)

  • Narrowing the gap.

Over at Rampancy.net, Narcogen has taken a long, hard look at the arguments at the halo2sucks.com website, and what, exactly, made them hate Halo 2 with such a passion. It’s a pretty interesting read. (Personally, I think he missed a critical piece of the puzzle – the fact that Halo multiplayer rewarded individual skill far more than teamplay, and Halo 2 was the reverse – but it all boils down to the same argument in the end, I think.) (Louis Wu 15:13:01 UTC)

  • Friday’s Fanfic

Only 6 new pieces in the Fan Fiction section this week – shouldn’t take you too long…(Louis Wu 14:31:37 UTC)

  • What the heck IS anapestic tetrameter?

There was another Halo 3 Humpday match played on Wednesday – and by ‘match’ I mean ‘KP plays Halo 3 Matchmaking and humiliates anonymous players’. There’s definitely some interesting info about the games there – go give it a read! MasterChief2829 was first with the news.(Louis Wu 14:28:50 UTC)

  • Elite vs. Elite Episode 5

EternalScrappy has created Elite vs Elite Episode 5 – this one seems to substitute funny noises for actual humor. (I guess by that I mean if there was humor intended in the action, I couldn’t find it.) Similar content and a download link can be found in this forum post.(Louis Wu 14:12:38 UTC)

  • Legion Of Jerks And Beta FAQ

    Halo 3 Logo

Sometimes, you’ve got to take the good with the bad. So first, watch KP take on random jerks you don’t know who are doing what you can’t right now: playing Halo 3. Nobody else showed up for the Humpday this week, so you don’t get specific jerks, just random ones.

After you’ve downed that nasty medicine, you get the candy. Although you can’t play Halo 3 right now, there’s a chance you might be doing so sometime soon if you’re one of the lucky ones in the Halo 3 Multiplayer Public Beta. If you are, or merely hope you will be, check out the Halo 3 Beta FAQ.

  • Halo 3 Beta FAQ

Phases one and two of the Halo 3 beta registration are now closed. However, many questions remain about the beta itself as well as further chances to get in. Here, we do our best to answer those questions.

  • Episode 101: Girls in Gaming Round Table

    Download | Shownotes

This episode we talk all about girls in gaming: their reputation and stereotypes, how they deal with idiots on Xbox Live, the crazy messages they get, how they handle all-girl gaming clans and organizations, and JVB being banned from the “house of hotness.” This show was a lot of fun and has some sweet outtakes at the end. Thanks to our guest hosts: PMS Kitty from Gamerchix, Talli from LOA and Cavegirls, and TheDonWan who is a cohost at the Loading Reality podcast and a game tester at Bungie. Ladies, take it away!

  • When Winning Is Not Enough, Halo 2 Sucks

    Narcogen on XBL

For most of the past few years the bulk of my attention has been on Halo’s campaign play: story, characters, and settings. Partly it’s my choice, since it is where my interest in Halo lies, but partly due to circumstances. For most of the past seven years, the Internet connections I had access to were unsuitable for online play.

Recent events, however, have conspired to bring my attention back to online play. The first is the upcoming Halo 3 multiplayer public beta. True to form, it appears that Bungie will have multiplayer ready to show the world before the campaign is finished; so between now and when the beta test ends, most Halo 3 discussion will probably focus on multiplayer aspects.

The second thing is that I finally have a reasonably priced Internet connection that makes it possible to participate in Halo 2 matches. While I still have more latency and less skill than a below-average Halo 2 player, for me, participation is the thing. I’ve already missed out on far too much.

The last thing was that during a discussion of an entirely different subject, my attention was drawn to Halo2sucks.com.

This is not normally a site I would pay much attention to. There’s something incongruous about reading a site that labels Bungie “sellouts” and proudly (if largely incoherently) claims that Halo 1 is better than Halo 2 and this inevitably leads to the conclusion that Halo 2 sucks.

However, then I began to feel that simply dismissing all the points the site tries to make simply because of the presentation was prejudicial; and despite the fear of directing attention somewhere it’s not warranted, I felt a need to address some of the points the site raised. Then I discovered what really bothered those who have contributed to that site. More on that near the end.

  • Halo 3 Humpday: Rumble Pit

Bungie entered the Rumble Pit this week to play a Humpday against a bunch of Microsoft employees with demanding jobs and busy lives, thereby avoiding our biggest pet peeve: Humpday opponents who are good.

  • HALO 3 Beta: A stress test in stages. Tons of testers.

It is confirmed by Microsoft Game Studios in an interview with Game Informer. The purpose of the HALO 3 beta will be to put stress on their systems. “You want to make sure that you know where your bottlenecks are and you attack those bottlenecks prior to going live with the retail version”. “It will scale over time” said Phil Spenscer of MGS. Microsoft also suggests that “hundreds of thousands of people” will play the beta.

Recall that Bungie did the same thing with HALO 2, except the public didn’t test. Rooms full of XBOXen running in loops did the stress testing.

Since this is a scaled test, I assume that the order of public testing will be:

    Alpha testers
    Bungie friends and family
    Microsoft Connect testers
    HALO Rule of 3 testers
    Initial Crackdowner purchases
Possibly downloaders via a public download on the XBLM

I’m not so sure we’ll be filing detailed bug reports. I would guess that if we get to file anything, it will be network related (laggy game, issues with XBOX Live, etc.). I doubt we’ll be reporting exploits found in the maps, geometry, weapons, or gameplay. With a few 100,000 people testing, I would think that it would be impossible to respond to all the feedback that the community would report. I’m guessing that exploits in the maps and gameplay features are to be found by the official play testers, not the mass public.

Except from the interview about the HALO 3 beta:

“It’s actually going to grow over time. It is a production milestone for us to make sure the Live systems are in place and that they work. There’s certain people playing on the Alpha right now and online and testing out systems and we want to be ready when we go bigger with the beta. It will scale over time and we need thousands of people from all around the world playing to make sure that all the systems are in place. In the end hundreds of thousands of people playing to make sure we’re ready to go live.”

  • New McKay Art

Luke McKay put up another Halo doodle of the day today – awesome shading. Thanks to Tex, who got to Luke’s RvB journal before I did.(Louis Wu 18:49:29 UTC)

  • Defeatist Journalism

Play.tm has put up a 2007 Preview article, discussing the upcoming blockbuster games this year – and yes, of course, Halo 3 is on the list. It’s pretty darned negative, though – it condemns Microsoft for squeezing every last penny out of the franchise, the fans for blindly following Bungie even after the horrible disaster that was Halo 2, and the general public for letting Halo 3 be the Game of the Year even if it sucks. Not particularly objective, eh? (Louis Wu 18:31:24 UTC)

  • MS GM Says Really Odd Things to GI

Phil Spencer talked to Game Informer recently, and the Halo 3 beta came up. (Surprise, surprise.) He states that the number of beta participants will ‘grow over time’:

It will scale over time and we need thousands of people from all around the world playing to make sure that all the systems are in place. In the end hundreds of thousands of people playing to make sure we’re ready to go live.

He also offers some bizarre suggestions about how they picked Crackdown to deliver the beta invite (basically, he says they wanted a game nobody was going to buy, so that they could “throttle how many people would get on”). Go read for yourself.(Louis Wu 17:56:26 UTC)

  • Lionhead Visits Bungie, Meets Jerome

Lionhead Studios’ Sam Van Tilburgh has published an article on Lionhead’s site detailing his visit to MGS and Bungie Studios. It’s a great read. Unfortunately, Jerome threatened to go Van Damme on Van Tilburgh, so he only got so far as the lobby.
