The latest news about the Halo series of games from Microsoft

  • Wow, really? 400?

The Bungie Weekly Update is up, as you may have already noticed (JawReich and calmkiller sure did) – it’s short, but it’s pretty informative. For the folks having trouble downloading the new maps – you should be able to get ’em by Monday, it looks like. And there’s some decent info about the upcoming beta. Go read! (Of course, it’s here, too, in our Weekly Update Archive.)(Louis Wu 02:00:30 UTC)

  • Bungie Weekly Update

Very, very short Weekly Update today, but some good news about failed Halo 2 map downloads, at the very least.

  • Episode 110: new Halo 2 maps in action

    Download | Shownotes

This show we talk all about our experiences with the new maps: What we liked and didn’t, what customs were good on them, strategies, architecture, graphics and sound, weapon placements, glitching, all that stuff. Guests this week are *Dweezle* from “Tied the Leader”:http://tiedtheleader.com, a Halo community and blog, and *ChuckieJ*, head of the “Godtacular Bible study”:http://godtacular.com. We also have a new segment: weekly Xbox Live Arcade reviews from *Rist Peblo*. This one’s a little long; we’ll pay better attention to keeping the length down in the future. Enjoy it!

  • I Blame Shishka.

_Wheels03 noticed that the most recent Halo Humpday Challenge (between 1UP and Bungie) has been chronicled both by 1UP (in a flikr photoset and the 1UP Show video podcast) and by Bungie (though as of now, all three games are linked to the third game stats – first game is here, second here). Looks like a good old-fashioned rivalry… check it out! (Louis Wu 21:13:10 UTC)

  • 360 demo out: Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

I saw a buddy on my list playing the new C&C3 demo. Indeed it was released this morning. After the 1GB download hit my demos folder, I gave it a try. Words to describe my first session:

    Deep, complex, strategy, cool, fun.

I got my butt kicked by some girl (I could tell because there’s XBOX Live vision support while playing). Apparently, I’ve got a lot to learn. I’m going to play the demo a bit more (especially when the Shadowrun demo ends). I might make a purchase. However, I’ll likely make the purchase for the PC.

Neowin.net said: The demo for Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars has been released to Xbox Live Marketplace for you to download and (hopefully) enjoy. The demo clocks in at 1 GB exactly, and includes two singleplayer maps, and one multiplayer map with Xbox Live Vision camera support.

C&C3 on Xbox 360 comes with a console specific control scheme that will hopefully be intuitive and easy to use, two console only multiplayer modes (Capture the Flag and Siege) and of course the Xbox Live Vision camera support we are hearing so much about. Nothing like seeing the ugly mug of the weirdo 13 year old kid who just owned you. Brings back memories of late night Counter-Strike play sessions. Yikes.

So go forth my friends, download the demo and enjoy. Remember, the retail release of Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars will be on May 10th.

  • Ziff vs Bungie

EGM thought they could take us on. They thought they controlled the media. They thought they could win. They thought wrong.

  • Haloid – in Hi-res

So, a few days ago, we mentioned a pretty cool video by Monty Oum – it’s a rendered fight between a Spartan and Samus Aran, and it’s really, really, REALLY well-done. Since then, the version we mentioned (at Gametrailers) has gotten noticed by a LOT of websites, including big boys like Penny Arcade and Joystiq. It’s nearing a million views there now – in just 3 days. (This has led, incidentally, to dozens of emails from people telling us we should front-page this puppy, because it rocks! – there IS a news search, you know. ;-> ) Well, Monty was kind enough to send us a high-res version to work with – so we’re making two downloadable versions available. Both are 640×480, and much nicer to look at than the GT copy. The WMP9 version is 136 mb, the QuickTime version is 147 mb. Be gentle…(Louis Wu 17:34:49 UTC)

  • Commodious.

Last week’s Vidoc had a scene where Bungie’s Justin Hayward (not to be confused with the guitarist for the Moody Blues) was discussing the “Portapotty” as a key location; Stuntmutt knows exactly what to do with comments like that, as he shows in today’s One One Se7en.(Louis Wu 16:45:27 UTC)

  • Halo 2 Vista Goes Gold – Officially

Seems to be pretty quiet – but Halo 2 Vista has officially gone gold – I found the press release on 1P Start. (I couldn’t find it anywhere else.) Just one more month!(Louis Wu 16:33:29 UTC)

  • Tombstone/Desolation impressions from GD

GameDaily has written up their impressions of the new maps; short, but mostly they liked ’em.(Louis Wu 16:11:55 UTC)

  • Remember Those Picture Based Adventure Games?

    journeyman1
Remember those picture based adventure games that simulated a 3d environment, only they were just 2d pictures that were loaded when you clicked on a certain part of the screen? I spent countless hours playing a couple of them and IGN has listed a top 10 of some of them here. I am sad they didn’t include ‘The Journeyman Project’. Looking at the dates I would have been 12-13 years old when playing that game… wow it doesn’t seem that long ago. I can still remember some of the plot twists and scenes like it was yesterday. The version I played was the first version on the Mac that didn’t have any of the performance updates the later versions got. So what that amounted to was clicking on a section of the screen (or keyboard, I can’t remember which) and waiting about 8-10 seconds for the next image to be loaded so you can move. Still, the game was fantastic, and had a cool feeling to it.

The plot centered around time travel, or prevention thereof. It was in the same vein as Myst, except the puzzle aspect of the game was not as much of an influence. It was in the adventure genre, and had an excellent storyline to back it up.

  • Design the Bioshock Limited Edition Box

From Elizabeth at The Cult of Rapture

Yes, you read that correctly. It started with an online petition from a fan on the 2K forums, imploring us to make a BioShock limited edition. 19,692 signatures later, I opened up a poll on the Cult of Rapture asking BioShock devotees what they would like to see in the box.

Now I ask you, what would you like ON the box?

To give you some backstory, this idea began because of a fan in the 2K forums, Rapture_Tourist gave us an awesome idea with his very detailed fan art of a possible BioShock Limited Edition (see picture above). We loved the feeling of his etched metal casing, and want to run with it.

So now, for the next two weeks, I’ll be collecting submissions for designs that could go on the front of the BioShock Limited Edition box.

Find out more about the contest now.

There’s tons of new content up over at MLGPro.com; you might just want to browse the video index to see what you missed. Highlights we haven’t mentioned yet: there are two video interviews with Shockwave, one right after their amazing comeback win over FBI The Agency in Charlotte’s Losers Bracket, and one after their loss to Final Boss in the Winners Bracket. And there’s an interview with Walshy after it was all over, too. Finally, there’s a blog post from Victory X, of FBI The Agency, talking about their eventful weekend. Check it all out! Thanks as always to 3Suns.(Louis Wu 13:43:04 UTC)

  • Friday’s Fan Fiction

Fourteen new pieces for you in this week’s Fan Fiction update (back to multiples of 7…), including a piece that has its own soundtrack. There was some confusion about the originally-submitted theme for Vanguard – turns out it was very, very close to another piece of music – so Sean Mortensen submitted a new version (midi format, 38k). Go listen to it while reading the story!(Louis Wu 13:26:01 UTC)

  • RT: Chicks Dig It

Guitar Hero II mania has officially swept the office. I overheard Jason and Nathan (of all people) comparing Achievements, which is something I never, ever thought I’d hear. It was pretty satisfying I must say, as those conversations are usually relegated…

  • Yale University Orchestra and Choir do H2 and H3 themes

Kind of reminded me of E3 announcements with the crowd cheering and all.

  • RT: Tastes Great! Less Filling!

Yesterday at lunch Geoff, Jason and myself all entered into a discussion about beer. We started to wonder if we could tell the difference between Lone Star, Budweiser and Coors Light while blindfolder. So, in the name of science we decided to conduct an…

  • RT: 100th Comic

Hey Everyone, So today’s comic is our 100th. In honor of that, Luke has made a special sponsor extra that I think you will enjoy. Speaking of Luke, immense thanks go to both he and Griffon for being able to consistently pump these things out. Watching the…
