  • Halo 3 Armour Permutation Guide

oriol pointed out that the Armor Permutation Guide at Grunts R Us is now the most complete one online. (Apparently that’s because they’ve added information about Bungie’s chestplate, used by employees showing off the flaming helmet.) I don’t know where this information comes from… but you’re welcome to judge its value for yourself. (Louis Wu 13:51:12 UTC)

  • Halo Matchmaking

Hi Guys, who’s up for some matchmaking tonight or lets see if we can get a bunch of us together and play some social matches.

  • An even easier way to do Tsavo.

A week or so ago, we posted a tip for getting through one of the tougher areas of Tsavo Highway – it involved bringing a Warthog across the broken highway, and required a gravity lift to work properly. Today, YaYap the Great sent us a trick that gets you a Chopper in the same area – with no grav lift. You can download the film from his FileShare (it’s called ‘Tsavo Highway’)… or you can just watch a short flick, showing you the trick. We’ve encoded both QuickTime (8.4 mb) and WMP9 (9.4 mb) versions – grab the one that works best for you. (Louis Wu 18:36:27 UTC)

  • Two.

Day Two of Stuntmutt’s One One Se7en Advent calendar is now up. I’m guessing that by the time you get to Twenty Five, you’re going to be begging for mercy.(Louis Wu 17:15:33 UTC)

  • He gets better parking spaces, too.

Because Bungie likes BOLL better than you, they sent him a really, really cool present. Take a look: (front | left | back | right) Yes, it’s okay to be jealous. (I am.)(Louis Wu 15:45:57 UTC)

  • A Controversial Subject – tackled with Halo

Hmm… when I saw this in my email this morning, I figured there was no way I was front-paging it. But then I read Hawty McBloggy’s intro, and watched the film in question… and I changed my mind. Joshua Garrison has used the Halo 3 engine to make a video about the Virginia Tech Massacre last April. He’s done a pretty good job of keeping it tasteful, as well. Go read, and watch.(Louis Wu 15:44:00 UTC)

  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

    Opening

The Call of Duty brand has existed for some time and was created by a company known as Infinity Ward. The first three Call of Duty games were based on the epic battles of World War II. However gamers soon began to go grow tired of that genre when many games decided to follow the ways of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor (another popular WW II franchise). For the fourth game, Infinity ward decided to make a change and chose a very wise option. That option was modern warfare. Although the story in Call of Duty 4 isn’t based on real events, its still uses the same weapons and does have a similar storyline to the wars and situations that are currently going on.

    Platform

    Xbox 360

    Visuals Score

    10

    Visuals

Call of Duty 4 has the most amazing graphics on the 360 by far. They are very realistic and the game has amazing physics. The character animations are very well done and the flame animations are amazing as well. Bullet holes and collision detection is very well done. The shading is beautiful and I enjoyed not having over-brightened and over-contrasted lighting effects in this game. It is clearly the most realistic graphics out there for the 360. The water reflections are great but not as realistic as some other games. There are ads and graffiti on the walls which look fairly realistic. However, with the Arabic they made a mistake by not making the letters touch. The camouflage is well presented, especially for the marine snipers. The facial expressions could have been improved but they still look good.

    Sound Score

    8

    Sound

The gun shots and the sound of the explosions are perfect. Call of Duty 4’s campaign has amazing voice acting as well. However, constantly hearing the same things (“Planting Claymore!”, “Cover me, I’m reloading!”, “Changing Mags”, “GRENADE!”…etc) in multiplayer gets a bit annoying. The music is nice and suits the game play. The voices are a bit stereotypical but not overdone. Also, realistic sounds of people walking and of course dying. I would have enjoyed better voice acting in the multiplayer.

    Gameplay Score

    9

    Gameplay & Controls

The gameplay in Call of Duty 4 has changed somewhat from the previous Call of Duty games but it still feels like the same experience but with a refreshing twist. This game is set in modern times so you will be using a lot of semi-automatic guns and ducking and finding cover is essential. Stealth is also important at times but isn’t always required. However, don’t mistake this game for a slow-paced shooter. There is a lot of intense action to be found within.

    Campaign:
The campaign in Call of Duty 4 is very well done. The introduction sequence was amazing and the ending is fairly good as well. The campaign removes most of your HUD when you don’t need it, giving it a more realistic feel. Call of Duty 4 is fairly easy on Recruit difficulty (as it should be) but on Veteran it is by far one of the most challenging shooters I’ve played. You get to experience a variety of different objectives and missions. One mission makes you go on a AC-130 gunship and take out tangos from the air while you see everything through heat vision. Other times you might have to play a lot more stealthily and letting the enemy know your location will lead to a very difficult game. Sometimes you will receive a lot of backup so you can go in, kill, wait for your backup and kill some more. Other times you will be outnumbered and the game will become much more strategic. This is a very realistic and cinematic game and really makes you feel as if you are in the story.

    Multiplayer:
Call of Duty 4 has an amazing matchmaking system. It has many different and unique game types such as Headquarters. In Headquarters, the two teams fight for control of moving objectives. However, the team that is in control of an objective cannot respawn. There are also typical game types such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy (similar to Halo 3’s assault) all make up the playlists. Also unlike Halo 3, you do not need to press the D-pad when trying to speak. Most of the playlists give you a HUD with a radar, experience bar, and weapon info. But there is also hardcore playlists where you receive no HUD giving it a more realistic feel.

All though there aren’t any online achievements to get there are still many online challenges. These challenges give you experience points and unlock new weapon attachments and camouflage styles. Some of these challenges are completed by getting a certain number of kills or headshots with a certain gun. Other challenges can include: cooking a grenade and killing someone with it, running 26 miles, or even jumping from a large distance and killing yourself. The challenges are fairly unique and quite fun to get. Based on the game type you receive experience points for kills and completing objectives.

Parties can be made and be used to enter Call of Duty 4 matchmaking together. You can create your own custom classes and customize the weapon, the add-ons, the camo type, type of special grenade and your special perks; all of this is used based on your chosen strategy. As yougain experience points you are awarded medals and levels. The levels also unlock new perks, challenges and weapons.

Custom games in Call of Duty 4, however, aren’t really as amazing. There is minimal customization in it. There also is no online co-op which is sad and you can’t bring guests into matchmaking which is also a downside. Overall the gameplay is amazing and will satisfy a lot of people. But if your more of a Halo or Unreal Tournament gamer you might want to rent it to see if Call of Duty 4 suits your style or not. Also spawn points cause some issues in multiplayer because it spawns you where all of your teammates are (commonly in the middle of combat) so you sometimes end up spawning and dying. But multiplayer really is the gem of this game.

    Longevity Score

    9

    Longevity & Drawbacks

The campaign is roughly 10-15 hours long on Recruit but you will definitely want to play it again on Veteran which will kill another 20-25 hours. Infinity Ward also added an “arcade mode” that is unlocked when you finish the campaign. Similarly to Halo 3’s “meta-game”, you score points for skillful kills and finishing a level quickly. That’s just single player. The multiplayer is so much fun you will want to play it over and over again. You receive the pride of accomplishment when you level up or complete a challenge. The ranks and challenges help you keep wanting to play the game more. So Call of Duty 4 will last for quite some time. However, be warned that though the gameplay does differ at times, its often repetitive so over playing it might want to make you play another game.

    Overall Score

    9.0

    Closing

Overall Call of Duty 4 is a fun game; for the people who like first-person shooters but don’t like Halo-style or Unreal Tournament-style games this is definitely worth it. It has an amazing campaign but multiplayer is what people will enjoy the most. With multiple difficulty levels and an arcade mode, Infinity Ward has built a really good amount of replay-ability into the campaign. Fans of the Call of Duty series will love it. It’s also good to see that games are finally leaving the WW II era. If you’re looking for a great shooter, I definitely recommend getting Call of Duty 4.

  • RT: Turn that D into a B

I wish someone would create a video game school like the one Griffon and Luke are putting Jack through. I’d re-enroll in grade school. Maybe this time I would graduate.

  • Halo 3 OST sputters out, sez IGN

IGN reviewed the Halo 3 Official Soundtrack – they weren’t very impressed. They found it repetitive:

Without a doubt the best elements of the album are delivered early on as part of Disc 1 and with each passing movement and section the music begins to lose a sense of wonder, the album itself running out of steam as it buckles under the weight of its own material.

They felt that it would have been better as a single disc. I’m sure there are a few fans who heartily disagree. Thanks to Gravemind for the heads-up.(Louis Wu 18:46:01 UTC)

  • One.

Stuntmutt has decided to do something very special this holiday season; he’s created a One One Se7en Advent calendar. Every day this December (until Christmas), there’ll be a new ornament on the tree, corresponding to that day’s comic. These comics will go live at a fixed time – probably noon, Eastern time (5pm UTC, 9am Pacific), and I may or may not get the news post up at the same time. When you visit the One One Se7en page, you’ll be met with a Christmas tree – the numbers correspond to the Advent offerings. As each day comes online, the ornaments will be numbered. Click on a number, view that offering. You can then get back to the main tree by clicking on the mini-tree that shows up next to the offering. (Try it. It’s easier understood than explained.) Strip One is up now. (Louis Wu 17:02:00 UTC)

  • Puzzleball 03 – Update

It seems that there was a problem with the Puzzleball 03 map c0ld vengeance released yesterday; a bug which pretty much killed the competition. He’s fixed it, and asks that everyone re-download the map if they want to participate. (If you used the old map, but didn’t exploit the bug – see his post – your entry will still count.) Apologies for the irregularities!(Louis Wu 16:50:21 UTC)
