I don’t know if you’ve been following the journals of our favorite Brit lately, but he’s had a hell of a tough time so far in 2008. It’s almost like dark forces are at work…

Gone fishin?
There’s an interesting piece over at Tied the Leader today – apparently, the Gunslingers are playing quite a bit of Call of Duty 4 these days, like many other people on Xbox Live, and XerxdeeJ looks at some of the reasons why. He also speculates on how long it’ll stay on top, given its strengths and weaknesses (vis a vis Halo 3) – but my big question is, when people are ready to move on from CoD, will they move BACK to Halo 3… or on to a different game altogether? Give it a read – and then toss in your two cents!(Louis Wu 17:02:11 UTC)

Ew. Just Burn the Hat.
Elnea’s posted Episode 117 (!!!) of her Halo Action Figure Theater – things are looking grim for Admiral Norris! However, the fact that she actually modeled a UNSCDF badge for his hat makes everything better. That… or the cake.(Louis Wu 14:41:27 UTC)

Beating Halo 3’s Biggest Level – Fast
If you’re interested in speedrunning Halo levels, you could just watch the videos at HighSpeedHalo.net – they’ll show you how others are doing it. However, if you’re looking for philosophy of route-taking, you need a blog entry. Ken Henderson has written up a piece on how to beat The Covenant in 20 minutes – I learned stuff from it!(Louis Wu 14:18:57 UTC)

Halo 3 drops to number 2 on Xbox LIVE
Halo 2 was released on November 9, 2004 – and from that point, until the week of November 13, 2006, it was the number one most played game on Xbox LIVE. (Part of that long, long run has to do with a dearth of killer titles for the time frame in question… but certainly Halo 2 was a truly playable online game.) Gears of War took over in the week of November 13… and remained on top until the week of September 24, 2007, when Halo 3 exploded on the scene. Halo 3’s run at the top was much shorter than either Halo 2 or Gears of War – a scant 16 weeks. As of the week of January 14, Call of Duty 4 has taken over the top spot. Will it, too, be dethroned in a matter of weeks… or will it hold on longer? Time will tell. Thanks to MasterChief2829 for the heads-up.(Louis Wu 14:01:50 UTC)

Call of Duty 4 more popular than Halo 3 on XBOX Live
—
by
Major Nelson released the Xbox LIVE activity numbers for the week of 1/14. More unique users played Call of Duty 4 than Halo 3 last week. (JDOGG?). Hrmm. I wonder if gamers spent more time in Halo 3 than in Call of Duty 4.
I got back into CoD4 and H3 in the last week. I am reminded that Call of Duty 4 is buggy and the guys at Bungie have made a superior user interface. Time and time again this past week, CoD4 parties were plagued with networking errors. Halo 3’s party experience was solid although it seems to take longer to play another game of Halo 3 than another game of CoD4. How popular would CoD4 be if it had solid netcode and some of the UI features found in Halo 3?
Halo 2 is still the #1 original XBOX game on XBOX LIVE.

Counter-strike and Everquest banned in Brazil
—
by
“Since January 17th, the games “Counter-Strike” and “Everquest” have been banned from sale in Brazil. The order comes into effect following an October 2007 Brazilian federal court decision, which ruled the games encourage “the subversion of public order” and are an “attack against the democratic state.”
LAN Centers have been forced to remove the games from their computers or face $5000-a-day fines. This all comes from a recent court ruling.
I really don’t know the political situation in Brazil (other than it’s a federal republic much like the U.S.), but I don’t see how governments can legislate morality and values. After all, our Constitution was written to limit the government, not the people.
Are the Brazilian courts protecting Brazil and public health by banning these games? If so, what else are they neglecting in the meantime?
Politics aside, Counter-strike and Evercrack are two of the most popular games of all time. They’ve been played in numbers that dwarf the most popular console games. And now they are banned in Brazil, the fifth most populous country in the world.
This ruling opens the door to many more games being banned in Brazil and even the rest of the world.
Shoutout to our Brazilian gaming friends. Tags: brazil, counter-strike, everquest, law

As Ross Mills says, this is probably stretching it, but… OhGizmo compares the new Samsung Silencio Cylinder Vacuum to MC’s helmet. When you’re done sniggering, you’ll have to admit… there IS a slight resemblance.(Louis Wu 23:10:55 UTC)

Send in Stuff for This Week’s Show: Customs and Creations with ForgeHub!

by
Episode 145: Foundry multiplayer tips will be out shortly. I’m trying to give you a little time to soak up the rapid-fire spray of episodes that have come out lately. This Sunday, however, we’ll be back to the usual Sunday release, with the exception of a two week break in early February because I’ll be out of the country. But I digress…
Sweet custom: Godzilla. Destroy the giant lizard structure before the guys in the mouth kill you with their flamethrowers.
Got a cool custom and/or forge edit? Now’s your chance to tell the Halo Nation about it! Just send in a description of it by hitting the big green button at the top right. Be sure to include your gamertag so we can give you credit. Also, be sure to upload it to your file share and give us a linky.
How do I get forge thingies to go where I want them?
TrueDarkFusion from Forge Hub will be joining us this week explaining some forge techniques. If you have any specific questions for him, feel free to ask away. If there’s anyone that’s an expert on Halo 3’s forge, he’s it.
Deadline is Tuesday night at about 7pm eastern. The sooner you get your custom or question in, the more likely it will be on the show. So hurry!

Halo Stats Tracking Utility is Back
Darkphibre has updated his Statistics Tracking Utility to work with Halo 3 – it’s a client-side tool, meaning you don’t have to access a website (other than Bungie.net) to view the stats. It requires the .NET 2.0 framework – not sure which Microsoft operating systems that includes, but it’s probably most of them. Take a look!(Louis Wu 12:42:35 UTC)
