  • Nintendo Wii Resposible for Death

    The Grim Wiiper Claims Life.

Although the Nintendo Wii has only been out a couple of months, it has managed to garner a tremendous amount of attention for the large number of injuries/accidents surrounding the console. The website Wii Have a Problem has taken it upon itself to document many of these accounts of property damage and bodily injury. Up to this point, however, most of these instances have been limited to bumps, scratches, black eyes, broken controllers – ya know, stuff you won’t care about in a matter of weeks/months. Unfortunately, one California woman recently fared much worse. While participating in a radio show contest to see how long one could “hold their wee”, while consuming water at regular intervals, she apparently gave herself water intoxication. She reported having a really bad headache, but did make it to her home where she was later found dead. She was trying to win the popular Nintendo gaming console for her 3 children.

  • The Brains Behind The Music

    by

    in
The cover article in the latest issue of The Escapist is about the composers behind today’s game music, and Marty O’Donnell (and the rest of the Bungie sound team) get a nice nod:

“I think one of the best examples is Marty O’Donnell and the team at Bungie,” says Ian Dorsch, who’s currently working on a game called Badge of Blood, by independent developer Warpig Studios. “The system they’ve developed for adaptive soundtracks is just jaw-dropping in its elegance and flexibility, and their work has really set the standard for the entire industry.”

The whole article is a pretty interesting read – check it out! Thanks to Ma1agate for letting us know.(Louis Wu 16:08:26 UTC)

  • For reference – info on the Halo 3 Legendary Edition

    by

    in
It’s been more than 2 months since the various flavors of Halo 3 were made public – it’s been known since early November that $60 would buy you the bare game, $70 would buy you the ‘special’ edition (game plus bonus disc(s)), and $100 would snag you the Legendary edition – helmet and 4 discs, including the game. Paul Russell stopped by today to point out that Wal-Mart’s listing has all the info you need for that Legendary edition – nice photos of the helmet and case, plus details about the included discs. (They list it as ‘In Stock’, which is pretty silly – but then, it’s labeled as Wal-Mart No. 000000000, so as soon as it’s assigned a SKU, it’ll likely have a more realistic ship date. Maybe not a REAL ship date – we won’t know that until Bungie announces it – but more realistic than ‘now’.) This is worth posting so that there’s a place to point to when folks ask about what is included in the Legendary edition. Update: Frankie warns that these pictures are just the prototype; the real thing is ‘waaaaay better, more detailed and has much fancier textures.’ Okay, now I’m worried that I didn’t preorder…(Louis Wu 22:35:46 UTC)

    HALO 3 helmet

UPDATE: Frankie says “Those photos are of the prototype. The real thing looks waaaaay better, more detailed and has much fancier textures. (not texturemaps)”

Finally we see what the HALO 3 Legendary Edition bundle will look like. thanks to a listing at Walmart.com. Check out that helmet! Wal-Mart also suggests October 1st, 2007 at the shipping date. However, November was the month in which Bungie and Microsoft shipped HALO and HALO 2. There is no official release date for HALO 3 since Bungie hasn’t announced one yet. Digg this story here.

    This bundle also comes with:

    * Behind-the-scenes at Bungie Studios with new insights into the Halo Universe and the making of Halo 3.
    * A special hi-res collection of all cinematics from Halo 1 and Halo 2 with director commentary from the Bungie Team bonus
    * Community content from Red vs. Blue, This Spartan Life and Exclusive Gamer Tiles & a Theme
    * Each unit will be serialized for added individuality and collectability. Not life-size.

Retsof-Noraa stopped by last night to point out a website that takes user-created art (in this case, his renditions of One One Se7en, in the initial post, and a Grunt, in a followup) and animates it in a huge rave scene. Bizarre… but fun. Check it out! (Add your own creations to the thread; it’s unlikely we’ll put up more front page posts about this, because art phenomenons like this one tend to generate way more interest than we have room for – but if you stick to that thread, you can be sure that anyone who reads this news post will have a chance to see it.)(Louis Wu 12:02:48 UTC)
