Catching up – forum news, starting in slipspace
Okay, on the assumptions that 1) KP and the crowd covering news this past week did a pretty good job keeping up with the halo at bungie.org address and 2) that everyone read my note last week and remembered NOT to send news to the lwu at bungie.org address and 3) that forum-based news had been covered pretty well through last Friday, I spent a little time digging through the last three days on the forum. Don’t worry – I still plan to read through all that email; I just haven’t gotten to it yet. (Real work is screaming at me, too.) So – here comes a series of quick pointers to forum posts that might contain information of interest to a wider audience. (I’m going to put them in their own news posts, to make things easier to find later.) First up – Nabsuh posted a new Slipspace animation a couple of days ago – looks great, and it’s not too big!(Louis Wu 18:00:50 UTC)

Gorgeous Halo Artwork accompanies Halo Music
Okay, so here’s the deal. I’m home from a week in pretty remote rainforests – but there’s no time to actually catch up on Halo news. (This would be a good time to pass along a HUGE thank you to the b.orgers who covered the Halo community this past week – they made it possible to relax, a wonderful thing.) Before I vanish for the day, however, there IS one bit of news I’d like to post. You might remember news of a band called The Unchosen, whose ‘Mjolnir Song‘ was heavily inspired by Halo – in fact, they’ve entered the song in the ‘Top of the Ox’ competition, and you can vote for it if you like. Well, this week, we got mail from Paul Davies, containing three new (gorgeous) pieces of Halo artwork, all three of which were commissioned by the band for a track they’re working on right now; it’s not clear whether it’s this same song or a new one, but you can thank them either way for the fantastic new artwork Paul created for them. Check out Chief, Chief/Cortana, and Halo Inlay. Wonga!(Louis Wu 17:37:53 UTC)

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Taking it to the Middle East in modern times.
The Call of Duty series is fast forwarding from WWII to modern times. CoD4 will put you in battle with terrorists in the Middle East. Check out the video for more details. Other than the details, very little is known about the title.
Infinity Ward is making the game. They’ve setup a teaser site at http://www.charlieoscardelta.com.
The hi-def version of that trailer can be found here at gametrailers.com. The trailer we revealed during Saturday’s NFL draft.
What are your thoughts on this? Why switch from a WWII setting? Why go to the Middle East where, well, we are still losing a lot of American lives?
“Politics aside, it’d be a hell of a lot more fun to play as an insurgent.” – Slashdot user.

I Love Guitar Hero II
After eating dinner Christina and I wandered into the nearby Gamestop and picked up the GHII demo. We took turns playing Cherry Pie and were hooked. We tried to buy it from them but they didn’t have any more. We had them call two other stores nearby with no luck. Finally, after visiting four stores I found it in WalMart. Apparently it’s sold out everywhere. The guy at the WM counter said “Finally found one, huh?” Not having told him of my journey, I replied, “Uh..yeah, finally. I can’t believe you guys have three.” “Three?” he replied. “We had twelve this morning. You’re very lucky.”
Yes I am.

Rocking out to Danzig is about the most fun I’ve had gaming. If you’re a fan of rock and roll as well as gaming then this is a game for you. I’m working through it on easy right now, which is pretty easy. However, it’s insane fun. I’ll have fun going through it again on each subsequent difficult, I’m sure. Danzig, Warrant, Ozzy, Alice in Chains, and Guns and Roses are the most fun for me right now. I look forward to downloading Motorhead and Edgar Winter when I finish the standard songs.
I’m able to 5-star most of them on easy on my first try, although I have had to play a few of them twice. Medium is tougher, though. It brings in more chords plus an extra button. I hope my pinky finger is up for a workout. GHII FTW!

Hands On: 360 Hard Drive Transfer Kit

HDD transfer and Elite hands-on video from Major Nelson: Stream
From joystiq
While we’re going through the manual that came with the Hard-Drive Transfer Kit, we though we’d share some pics of the little devil. It connects to the underside of the Xbox 360 hard drive and to the console via USB. This kit did not come with the Xbox 360 Elite. Microsoft anticipates most customers purchasing the Elite will be new customers; however, if you’re upgrading, they’ll provide a free Hard-Drive transfer kit redeemable at Xbox.com. While that’s working (estimated time: 42 minutes), here’s some info from the process:
You need to snap your 20GB drive onto the Elite, and plug the 120GB drive into the Transfer Kit (yeah, we thought it was the other way around at first, too)
Despite the image on the CD sleeve and software screen, the manual says “be sure to connect the transfer cable to the back port, not a port on the front of the console.”
This process does not copy your 20GB hard drive; it moves that data over to the 120GB drive and erases the 20GB drive
The preloaded content on the Elite will be erased and replaced with your old data (not Hexic! Not again! Our refurbed 20GB drive didn’t have Hexic on it … and now the Elite won’t either)
XBLM and XBLA data will be moved, but the licenses “are tied to your console not your hard drive.” This means you will only be able to play/watch those items while connected to Xbox Live. (Update: this only applies to switching consoles — users upgrading to the 120GB drive on their existing console shouldn’t encounter this shortcoming)Movie rentals will not be moved at all and will need to be watched before transferring data.
Update: And we’re done. The update took just under 40 minutes, and we needed to re-enter the network security settings for the 360’s wireless adapter, but otherwise it went smooth enough. Our save games are intact and operable, our XBLA games are intact and semi-operable (as long as we’re signed onto XBL, otherwise they behave like demos) and, whaddya know, Hexic remained on the drive!

No Pressure Though
Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell can be found commenting on Halo 3’s potential impact on next (fiscal) year’s earnings for Microsoft on OXM’s UK website:In terms of the direct impact, obviously it’s a first-party product so it’s reasonably profitable from our point of view, and it will be several hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue next year
Sounds like a good deal. Thanks to JeBr0nie for the heads up and for having an unreasonably capitalized name.(KP 17:54:11 UTC)

Spend $1500 of My Money at Tiger Direct
Well, it’s not my money…My dad’s laptop croaked a few days ago. He returned it under warranty to tigerdirect and they called him today to tell him he had a $1500 credit. He’s got to call them in the next hour and tell them what laptop he wants with the credit. He asked my advice in getting the best bang for the buck, so I am asking the advice of the uber-geeks here.
He surfs the web, uses ebay, trades email, stores and plays music files, and plays simple games. How would you spend $1500 at tigerdirect.com?

Nail in the coffin for Halo Movie?
As reported in Variety and Deadline Hollywood Daily, Larry Shapiro has left his position at CAA. What’s the big deal? Remember when Bungie would mention how they were meeting with CAA and shopping the Halo script around to movie production houses? Larry apparently was a big part of making those kind of meetings happen….
