The latest news about the Halo series of games from Microsoft

  • Visual Comparison – Halo 2 on 3 platforms

Gamespot has a video comparison of some of the improvements in graphical quality to Halo 2 – clips from the Xbox, Xbox360, and Windows Vista are all shown. Does a nice job (at least in the HD version of the vid) of really showing how much better the Vista version looks.(Louis Wu 13:38:44 UTC)

  • SIU looks at H2V

The Daily Egyptian (student newspaper of Southern Illinois University Carbondale) has a look at Halo 2 Vista – see what the college students think.(Louis Wu 13:32:18 UTC)

  • I don’t like flying poo, myself.

GameDaily wrote up an article entitled ‘Halo 2 for Vista: Why You Should Give a Sh*t‘ – some of them are pretty lame, but the article’s worth a look. (Louis Wu 13:29:00 UTC)

  • High Resolution Halo Opens its Doors

Matt6908 sent us a note about High Resolution Halo, a new site he’s kicked off. We don’t normally mention new sites, but this one is chock-full of cool assets like medals, matchmaking ranks, emblems, cutouts, HUD pieces… a cornucopia of resources if you’re making Halo-related graphics. Check it out!(Louis Wu 12:52:45 UTC)

  • Halo the Movie (Heroes Version)

Okay – I went through all mail to us in the past week, and plucked out some stuff that didn’t get mentioned, but maybe should have. It’s in (mostly) chronological order… sort of. First up: NuclearPinguin and Lt tuma put together a trailer for Halo the Movie, using clips from OTHER movies; it’s an interesting piece of work. You can watch it at YouTube. (Louis Wu 12:49:58 UTC)

I’ve turned off comments on the site, mainly because they were pretty much all spam, but also because no-one was really leaving any comments 🙂

  • RT: New Marketplace Content

Hey Everyone, It looks like one of our new picture packs went up on XBL Marketplace today. I wanted to go ahead and post it here so you could get a good look at it. (I know I kind of hate buying something without see what I’m getting first.) It’s our “wacky…

  • Shadowrun beta comes to an end

    Shadowrun beta is over

The Shadowrun beta has ended. EnragedGnome wrote that it ended a few hours earlier than expected over on SR.thx.com. That was odd, I guess. I know one user in Germany actually couldn’t play early this afternoon because the time has already come for that timezone.

I agree with what Gnome said. It was great to be a part of the development process. FASA listened to what we had to say and actually changed the game based on our feedback. I was fortunate to be in the beta when just several dozen players were playing it outside of the Microsoft campus. FASA has named bots after some of the testers. They gave Crackdown out before the game was released. They are handing out a lot of swag for the testers. (They even flew some people out to Microsoft to play the game). It was a good ride and FASA was very cool throughout the whole process.

More importantly, I found a new shooter that had a lot of replay value even if we had limited options and just two maps. I played the same two maps with XBOX-quality graphics and limited weapons, magic, and tech for many hours each week. I thought the gameplay was so good that I would play the same bare version of the game.

I wish more of you could have played it.

Will THX like this game? I hope so. A demo will be made available sometime around the launch date (unknown). I’ll definitely keep lobbying for you guys to buy the game.

I think if everyone gave it a try, they would like it. Shadowrun is a shooter that allows you to play your game on your build in your way. Like to play slow and snipe? Then build your character that way. Like to be sneaky and fast? Then build your character that way. Like to play a supporting role? Then play that way. Just select your race and select your upgrades. There are some older testers (some have grandkids) in the beta that are quite good at Shadowrun. They may not be the best shot. But they are good at the game.

I think Shadowrun could easily bring back the LAN on Live feel. I even feel that this game would be great on LAN. After all, the party system is based on an improved version of the HALO 2 party system. Actually, the game itself has deep, dark Bungie roots.

Oculus, jayWHY, and Gnome will vouch for the game. They’ll be ordering it for one of their platforms.

What do I have planned? I’ll be buying the game for PC (and likely 360 if THX adopts and we have LANs). I’m going to play it a lot*. I’ve actually got dedicated SR servers already lined up. I only expect to play Shadowrun and HALO 2 (PC) for the rest of the year. I’ll likely try another game or two (like Quake Wars and UT3).

I’m also going to try to hold a Shadowrun LAN at my house (or in the brewery?**) after the game is released. Some of the top beta testers live within a few hours of here. Also, other beta testers have said they would attend. Maybe in fact some testers will come. Ideally, I’d like to get a FASA representative out here, too. Working on it. More on that later.

So, yeah. The beta is over. Good news for me is that HALO 2 (PC) comes out next Tuesday. I’ll be taking the day off of work for that one.

    * That said, I haven’t played the PC version of the game. If I feel that FASA has tweaked the keyboard and mouse too much, I likely won’t play the game on PC. Cross-platform play is dangerous. A lot of balancing has gone into the gameplay to slow down the keyboard and mouse players. If I’m a lot better on 360, I’ll play on 360. However, since I feel constrained with a controller surely I’ll like it on PC better even if the aiming reticle has been skewed and some graphics effects made exclusive to the console.

** Got to work that one out. Good rock if it does. Uber cool space for LAN party.

  • M6D Pistol on HALO3.com

    MD6

HALO3.com has been updated with some new information. Among the new content is a listing of weapons. The first one listed? The M6D.

Unfortunately, we get no performance information. However, they do mention the 2x scope.

What if HALO 3 ships with the old-school HALO 1 pistol?

  • halo3.com – live and full of stuff

serpx noticed that halo3.com now has quite a bit of new content (updated about a week ago) – including tidbits like the fact that the M6D is returning (though we know nothing about its specs), some story details that have not elsewhere been confirmed before (to avoid spoilers, I’ll not specify them, but you can read them yourself if you’d like), and more. Go check it out! (I’m sad for Gearbox that in the Games section, the only title left out is Halo PC…) The Media section contains a nice centralized location for videos, screenshots, concept art (I see one or two as-yet unpublished ones there, too), and the like – go browse!(Louis Wu 21:24:35 UTC)

  • Lens Flair.

Today’s One One Se7en shows off Stuntmutt’s punache (pronounce that any way you like) while looking at the new artwork released by Bungie last Friday. (Which reminds me – Friday’s strip is now visible; don’t blame mnemesis, blame his tools.) And that does it for a little bit; again, I promise, I’ll get through email soon. Hopefully, there’s enough content here to keep you entertained for a little while.(Louis Wu 18:22:02 UTC)

  • It’ll put hair on your chest, too.

Martin Duffy stopped by our forum to point out a public reading he’d had recently – it wasn’t Halo-related, but he attributes some of his success in fiction writing in general to Halo, and to the HBO fanfic community specifically – good on ya, guys! (And congrats, Martin.) (Louis Wu 18:17:36 UTC)

  • Evolution of Gaming

macegac noticed an article at Playstation Universe, looking at series and how they’ve evolved, graphically, over the years. Halo, interestingly enough, had TWO series – the only game with that honor. (Louis Wu 18:15:12 UTC)

  • Wongissima.

Self Induced seemed to have some free time yesterday – he shows clearly that my vocabulary could use a bit more variation. Point taken. (Gah.)(Louis Wu 18:12:56 UTC)

  • District and Uplift Tours

darthbob noticed that Microsoft Game Studios has posted ‘Map Tours’ of District and Uplift, the two new maps coming out with Halo 2 Vista; they’re available in Flash format by navigating through the new H2V interface at MGS. (Look under the Media tab.)(Louis Wu 18:11:16 UTC)

Rockslider continues his ‘Spotlight with Suzie’ series – this time, Suzie looks at new Halo 3 gizmos. She’s a funny lady. (Louis Wu 18:08:38 UTC)

  • The Wrong Crowd

CougRon pointed out that Red vs Blue Episode 96 was released for sponsors late Friday night (it’ll almost certainly be available for everyone else by today sometime). There’s definitely some funky stuff going on in RvBLand… and my goodness, aren’t we thrown a few curveballs. Go watch (unless you’re not a sponsor, in which case, wait a bit, and THEN go watch).(Louis Wu 18:07:11 UTC)
