  • Fanmade Halo T Slogan Contest

Last week, _Wheels03 started a small contest to come up with a good slogan for a Halo 3 Launch T-Shirt. In the last 24 hours, interest seems to have picked up quite a bit – I’m mentioning this because entries are flooding in. You’ve got until Friday, August 10 to come up with an entry… check it out!(Louis Wu 11:08:57 UTC)

  • Chock full of fun…

Boxer pointed out a new Adventures in Disaster comic, based on a snippet of text in last Friday’s Bungie Weekly Update. Boom!(Louis Wu 11:04:02 UTC)

  • Fixing it

The Seattle Times has a profile of Harold Ryan, Bungie’s Studio Manager, up this morning. It’s nice to get a look at the world as Harold sees it; this is a guy who makes decisions every day that affects what you’ll get to play on September 25 (or 26, depending on where you live). Interesting factoid for the Bungie stalkers among you; total size of the crew working on Halo at this point is 250 people.(Louis Wu 11:01:15 UTC)

  • Old Rants

This morning, I went through the Google News Alerts about Halo that came in in the last few days – and ran across this article at TeamXbox (via Voodoo Extreme). I would have passed on it (it’s old, now – 4 days old – and it’s clearly written specifically to get hits), but when I looked through our forum (something I haven’t been able to do for a week), I found this thread, and there’s enough interesting commentary in there to warrant the post. Give it a read – but keep your lid on; remember that it’s just TRYING to make you mad.(Louis Wu 10:21:01 UTC)

  • Halo 3 Achievements Updated

Monster 2 of 2, of Achieve360Points, let us know that Xbox.com has updated the Halo 3 Achievement list. They’re relatively minor changes (the score needed for certain acheivements wasn’t set before, and it is now, plus one achievement received a new name), but it’s getting more solidified. Do not look at this list if you don’t want see campaign spoilers.(Louis Wu 21:25:39 UTC)

  • When marketing goes too far

Back – exhausted, but back. It’s going to take me a while to go through my inbox, but this popped out at me; you can now preorder Halo 3 at your local 7-11. That just seems… silly.(Louis Wu 21:20:52 UTC)

  • Almost…

Rockslider dropped a note on the forum pointing us to a few new additions to his site, primarily the “Grunty Corridor Fun” to be had on Assault on the Control room. Good Stuff.(KP 21:13:39 UTC)

  • RT: The Darkness…Part Deux

What’s up yo? As I was wracking my brain trying to think of something to write to intro this comic, I realized that this is the 152nd time I’ve done this, and everything that could ever be mentioed has already been written – twice. So uh…here’s today’s…

  • Quake 3 Arena coming to XBOX Live Arcade. Unreal Tournament 3 for PS3 supports keyboard and mouse.

    Quake III Arena box arts

Great news for Quake III fans (and perhaps keyboard and mouse fans). Coming out out of QuakeCon, iD made the announcement that Quake III Arena is headed to XBOX Live Arcade. Quake III Arena is considered one of the greatest first person shooters of all time. It’s very fun. It’s very competitive. It will be a huge hit on XBOX Live – at least, I hope it is. For (an assumed) $10, this is going to be a heck of a game. However, I have a feeling that FPS fans are going to be busy with another game.

    Unreal Tournament 3

In other news, Epic announced that the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 will support keyboard and mice as NATIVE input devices. Excellent! However, Microsoft does not currently allow keyboard and mice to be used as NATIVE input devices. Shucks! Imagine if other XBOX games supported keyboards and mice. HALO 2 or 3. Command and Conquer. HALO Wars. Surely console RTS fans would welcome kb/m. FPS fans would as well. PC gamers would be more open to the platform.

Is SONY going to capture some of the PC gaming audience with this move? Will Microsoft simply not make a move and stand firm on their policy of “no keyboards and mice” on their consoles?

I for one want to see new XBOX 360 titles supporting keyboards and mice. Surely it wouldn’t require much investment from the development house to get this up and running – especially considering the additional sales that such a setup would generate (not to mentioned the ridiculously over-priced keyboard and mice accessories that could be sold).

The PC versus controller debate just got a little more interesting.

    currently playing: Shadowrun
on the back burner: Catan, Guitar Hero II, HALO 2 (PC)
    Shadowrun rocks!

  • Hell on Halo

Brathnok let us know that a friend of his wrote a Halo song; you can read about it, and listen to it, on the Second Foundation website. I wasn’t able to grab all of it here, but the first few seconds reminded me of Lou Reed. And… that’s it for today. Headed out for what might just be the longest travel day of my life (I should be home in a bit over 24 hours); updates from here on in (or lack of them) are due to the rest of the HBO news gnomes.(Louis Wu 14:12:13 UTC)

  • Intervention

Mister Froggy let us know about Halo, Articulated #62 – not sure where this is coming from, but the diagnosis seems right.(Louis Wu 14:05:25 UTC)

  • Grunt Hunt

Sam M let us know that he’s working on a game called ‘Grunt Hunt’ – it’s basically a Halo-themed version of Duck Hunt. It’ll be available later this month from his website, for both WIndows and Mac, and you can see a video showing how it plays at YouTube now.(Louis Wu 14:03:10 UTC)

  • Somewhere Only We Know

Jamie98s let us know that he’s released a music video set to the song ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ by Keane; it’s hosted by Mythica. I can’t tell you what it’s like – but his work is usually quite good, and it’s less than 25 mb. Check it out!(Louis Wu 13:59:44 UTC)

  • MSN Spotlight on Halo 3

There’s an MSN Spotlight on Halo 3 today; if you visit the MSN front page, you’ll find a block of Halo 3 links, including articles about the game’s showing at E3 and summaries of in-game features. Thanks, EskimoDragon13.(Louis Wu 13:57:14 UTC)

  • You’re all forgers.

Today’s Bungie Weekly Update focuses on multiplayer co-op, as well as cool details about other tidbits coming with the release of Halo 3. Go get hyped! (As always, it’s in our Weekly Update Archive, too.)(Louis Wu 04:10:27 UTC)

  • Halo Player’s Guide to Marathon

    Marathon Logo

Some of us senior citizens are having a blast now that Marathon: Durandal is out for Xbox Live Arcade. I’ll post later in greater length about how this adaptation is simultaneously absolutely faithful to the original while still timely and fun, and how its design teaches lessons still relevant a decade after its release.

However, many Halo fans have never played Marathon. Many may not have heard of it until now. Some, as ridiculous as this sounds, were not even born when it was released. Is Marathon still for them?

It sure is. But before playing, it’s best just to do some fair warnings about some quirks in Marathon’s design that might frustrate a player whose only exposure to Bungie so far is the Halo series.

Some updates on co-op, Amsterdam, and the Bungie AV Calibration tool. Enjoy –  it’s on the house.

  • That’s a big helmet there

An EB Games employee sent this link to a youtube video of them going ga-ga over the Halo 3 Legendary Edition display they just setup. I won’t mention his name in case this could possibly get him in trouble!

And of course, since da boss is away for another day or so, I’m gonna break a front-page rule and plopz da utube rightzhere!

  • Metallica in Guitar Hero III AND Rock Band

    Thanks Joystiq

In a conference call where Activision re-tooted their own horn about how much money they made so far this year, they also let it slip that Metallica would be in Guitar Hero III. The song will be One, a master track off of Metallica’s …And Justive for All album. This may sound like old news, but you’re probably getting confused with Rock Band also having Metallica. Yes, it is going to be hard to keep track of what games have which songs in this holiday rhythm showdown.

During the conference call Activision also said that Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the ’80s was the best-selling game on its first day in Activision history. They also said they are significantly increasing guitar production to meet the expected demand of Guitar Hero III this holiday season.

  • John 1:17

Today’s One One Se7en goes back to Stuntmutt’s roots on XBL. I’m sure the Helljumpers remember them well.(Louis Wu 15:06:36 UTC)
