Tourneys around the US
Got word of a couple of different tournaments coming up soon. Zoolu let us know about Battle for Scouting a tourney to benefit the Boy Scouts – they’ve got a MySpace page, or you can read about it at 1Up.com, if you’re allergic to MySpace. Entry fee is $50/team, 32 team max, with up to $800 going to the winning team (depending on participation, I’d assume). This takes place in Manitowoc, WI, on September 24. The second tournament is a 2v2 tourney being held in Redlands, CA on September 11 – Injunfett has the details (check the Toads Game Center website for the nitty gritty). $40/team, up to $250 for the winners. Go practice!(Louis Wu 13:49:37 UTC)

Get a Job
Simpsons Rule posted a music video set to the Offspring’s ‘Why Don’t You Get a Job’ – it uses Halo and Halo 2 cutscenes to tell a story. General consensus (which I agree with) is that the Halo parts are better – but it’s a fun movie in its entirety. Grab a copy! (It’s about 17.5 mb, depending on version.)(Louis Wu 13:42:20 UTC)

Forge-o-rama
The latest Bungie Podcast was posted yesterday evening – Frankie and Luke talk to Tyson and Lars about Forge, and all the cool stuff you can do with it. Intriguing tidbits – Frankie calls it ‘Forge’ while Tyson and Lars call it ‘The Forge’… and ‘Infection’ (a Bungie-created Zombies variant) is officially in the final game. Neither of those tidbits are even relevant to the podcast as a whole; listen for some awesome ideas about how you’ll be able to use this tool when Halo 3 comes out. First heads-up came from AshofPompei, on our forum.(Louis Wu 13:14:06 UTC)

Kudos to Nick, who suggested a small change in our news post layout; we’re still posting news with UTC timestamps, but the link now goes to a page that should make it easy to see what that time is in your local zone. Thanks, Nick!(Louis Wu 11:34:53 UTC)

Replay It Again, Sam: What Makes Games Re-Playable?
It’s hard to escape the concept of repetition in entertainment, especially in gaming. While the word “repetetive” itself is often used as a criticism (hello Halo 1’s interiors) games are designed to be played repeatedly, and incorporate repetetive elements into their designs.
It’s understandable. As an object lesson in entertainment economics, look at the DVD player. Widely hailed as the fastest-adopted new entertainment technology, it is built on the foundation of repetition; the idea that people will want to play the movies and television shows they love over and over. Given that game console hardware and software are both about three times as expensive as DVD players and DVD discs, they have to be at least as repeat-friendly to warrant that kind of investment.
There a lot of different ways to extend a game’s useful lifetime and give gamers more bang for their buck by allowing for repeat plays; the Halo series, as well as many other games, provide excellent examples of this.
Since the nature of online multiplayer itself is repetition– short competetive matches played with a seemingly endless revolving door of random opponents– we’ll leave that aside for the moment. Many games don’t have multiplayer at all, and even most that do don’t encompass all of their purchasers in online matches. However, there are many ways that repetition is used in designing a single-player campaign that can remain interesting after many playthroughs.

PALGN: Marathon Among ‘Best Values’ on XBLA
Australia’s PALGN has posted a review of Freeverse’s XBLA port of Marathon: Durandal. Their verdict:
Marathon: Durandal is one of the best value games on the XBLA. You could spend more time playing through this than Halo, and at a fraction of the cost. There are aspects of the game that are archaic and it’s not a good game in short bursts, however, it provides a mysterious and lengthy experience for anyone who is willing to immerse themselves.
They did say it’s too easy to get lost, but there’s always the Marathon Spoiler Guide if you do.

Gamertag Radio gets temporarily shut down and ransomed by greedy web host

Godfree at Gamertag Radio just informed us that Gamertag Radio has been shut down without warning by his hosting company and held at ransom to bring it live again. Here’s the email they sent him:
Your site gamertagradio.com was suspended because it consumed an
excessive amount of resources.
One of our techs was doing a routine check on the server, and your
site was consuming
more than 4.62% of the servers RAM, more than 1.93% of the server CPU
and more than 14% of the server MySQL resources.
Our policy is 10% of the entire servers resources.O RLY? Maybe you could have told him about this hidden fee so he could decide whether he could afford the price hike before you instantly dropped his site after four years and demanded more money to bring it back up? That’s what I call extortion. If you’re with me, why not contact midphase and leave them a poignant note about their shady business practices?

Baggy McBaggington
Did you like that messenger bag that Laird posted a pic of this morning? How about that sling bag over at Gamestop, as noticed by X1Zero? Well, okay, fine – then what about THIS messenger bag, picked up by Boxer? All of these are alternatives to the huge number of bags being marketed by Enmon, or the bags at the Bungie Store, or… ah, hell, there are more Halo-related bags out there than you’ve got stuff to put in ’em.(Louis Wu 18:44:55 UTC)
