Podtacular community: ImpulsiveNinja needs our help

August 31st, 2007

I received a heart-wrenching email from AuroraX this morning:

Hey Foo Mo. One of the members here called ImpulsiveNinja (real name Jason Huffstutler) is going through an extremely rough time in his life. He is 17 years old and his dad is dying. His dad has had hepatitis for years now, and it has finally overtaken him. He is in the hospital in a coma and on life support. He will not be able to recover, and the only way he will live is if he stays in a coma and on life support for the rest of his life. Their family has made the incredibly hard decision that his suffering should end, and they took him off of life support today. He is sedated so he will not feel anything and he will pass peacefully, but he isn't expected to live more than 24 hours. Jason aka ImpulsiveNinja has been a member of the community for a little while now, and he really looks up to you and the other leaders here, and it would mean a lot to him if the podtacular community did something kind for him during this terrible time. I don't mean anything big, just something so that he knows we are there for him during this time.

Jason could use our help. What I plan on doing is making a collage card of some type with names, notes, and graphics from his friends at the Podtacular community. If you would like to add something to the card, please put it in the comments along with your gamertag and/or name. If you would like to send a graphic please send it to podtacular@gmail.com. I'll add all of these up shortly and send them to Jason to let him know we care. And please, if you're a praying person, pray for Jason and his family in this extremely difficult time. AuroraX will be visiting him soon and will keep us updated.

Can the biggest video game launch of all time be contained? I bet we’ll see gamers playing this game in the next few days.

When Shipping Departments Screw Up

August 31st, 2007
Wow. nash--housewares found a thread on an Italian forum with some pictures that, if they're what they look like, do NOT bode well for keeping Halo 3 secrets until launch day. We're looking into this - but if it turns out to be what it looks like, I'm thinking we'll probably close the forum down for 3 weeks. Starting... really soon. Stay tuned.(Louis Wu 19:29:26 UTC)

Machinima Festival Europe 07 – it’s not too late!

August 31st, 2007
Are you a machinima maker with content near completion (or completed)? Hugh Hancock's discussion of the Game Content Rules mentioned, almost incidentally, Machinima Festival Europe 07, taking place in Leicester, UK in mid-October. The deadline for submissions is TOMORROW - but if you can make that deadline, and your work meets the submission guidelines, you should think seriously about entering. Update: Hugh Hancock points out that the deadline's been extended until the 8th - so you have more than a week. GET CRACKING!(Louis Wu 19:17:08 UTC)

Gears of War Hidden Fronts map pack free on Monday

August 31st, 2007

With nearly 500,000 downloads to date, the “Gears of War®” Hidden Fronts Map Pack has become the No. 1 piece of premium downloadable content on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

“Gears of War” has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide, and continues to hold the title of most popular Xbox 360 game on Xbox LIVE, as “Gears of War” recorded the most number of unique players among all Xbox 360 games in August 2007, as well as the highest cumulative number of hours played by Xbox LIVE members.

In the Hidden Fronts Map Pack, players can clash for control of four dynamic areas, including Bullet Marsh, Garden, Process, and Subway:

Bullet Marsh
In this Kryll-infested swamp, an old generator still powers the area lights. A few stray bullets could easily knock out the generator, leaving combatants to fend for themselves against the Kryll.

Garden
This overgrown and crumbling conservatory still has a working fertilization and pesticide system. This system can pose a serious hazard to anyone who ventures into the greenhouse without first venting the air.

Process
Fight for control of this subterranean Imulsion processing plant, still active despite the cessation of the Pendulum wars.

Subway
Timgad ‘s Central Subway station used to serve as a central hub for commuters. Now the tunnels are crawling with Locust.

Content Rules, Machinima, and More

August 31st, 2007
Hugh Hancock wrote up the full discussion of his conference call with Microsoft about the Game Content Usage Rules we mentioned yesterday. He mentions Halo specifically, puts forth some very common-sense arguments to some of the overreactions that hit the net soon after the Rules did, and even manages to squeeze in an xkcd reference. You can't do better than that. (He also suggests you read an article written by Fred von Lohmann, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, on this subject - he was also in on this conference call, and, unlike Hugh, IS a lawyer. Fred's article is pretty positive as well.) Bottom line from yesterday ("Don't Worry, Be Happy") still stands. As long you're not making "Cortana does Cleveland" or something...(Louis Wu 18:37:58 UTC)

Fans in Japan

August 31st, 2007
Next Generation has a tidbit about the Halo 3 marketing flood in Japan. More of a wave, actually. They're giving out fans. (The paper kind.) (Louis Wu 15:25:06 UTC)

Don’t Stop Believing

Jamie98s sent along another music video for your perusal - this one's set to Journey's "Don't Stop Believing", and tells the story of lost, and found, love. Available in both WMP9 format (36.5 mb) and QuickTime format (34.8 mb).(Louis Wu 14:34:54 UTC)

Frickafrackawatermarks…

August 31st, 2007
Entertainment Weekly has new Halo 3 screenshots - a baker's dozen. (Well, a few are not new - but most are. Unfortunately, all the new ones have a huge EW.com watermark right over the middle of them...)(Louis Wu 13:51:59 UTC)

September’s 360 – a Halo fest

August 31st, 2007
We occasionally post magazine scans of Halo articles, though we never post stuff before the issue's off the newsstand shelves, and we never post stuff from magazines that have specifically asked to be removed from our site. One thing that hasn't happened before, though, is that until now, we have not been contacted by a magazine and asked to show off some of their Halo content before it's available for purchase at your local retailer. 360 Magazine, in the UK, changes that for us. Staff writer Gavin Mackenzie contacted us about their upcoming Halo Special Collectors Issue, due on newsstands on September 6 (that's next Saturday). They're in the UK, but Barnes and Noble in the US will carry these as well (though likely later than September 6). He sent along the cover for the article, as well as teasers for some of the Halo content (one | two). Even the parts of the magazine that have nothing to do with Halo have a Halo theme - check out the design of the Reviews section this month. If you're somewhere you can buy this - you should. Looks like it'll be a fun read! (Louis Wu 13:33:34 UTC)

HaloPhone

August 31st, 2007
sorahn hacked his iPhone to be more Halo-flavored - there's a standard background, and a Cortana background. Nice!(Louis Wu 13:29:19 UTC)

Make your OWN poster.

August 31st, 2007
Mrguy got hold of a very large version of the MC-with-Gravity-Hammer image that will grace the third issue of Halo: Uprising - this is the same image that Ironlion's now got in poster form. If you want to download the huge one - swing by Mrguy's post.(Louis Wu 13:25:26 UTC)

More on the Content Rules

August 31st, 2007
Nitro288 stopped by to point out a blog post from DonkeyXote, otherwise known as Don McGowan, a Microsoft attorney who wrote up (helped write up?) the Game Content Usage Rules. (He was one of the guys who spoke to Hugh Hancock yesterday - here's his note about the call.) Again, it sounds like the gloom-and-doom predictions of the Halo machinima community, made right after the Content Rules were first posted, might have been a little premature. We'll keep an eye on this.(Louis Wu 12:53:20 UTC)

A subculture of hard-core video games

August 31st, 2007
Interesting mainstream writeup of Halo in Time magazine this week - it still talks about Halo as though it's an underground obsession and gamers are still geeks who live in their parents' basements... but they're STARTING to see the power of the brand. (Louis Wu 11:36:04 UTC)
