Video Games and Morality
Computerworld’s Dan Tynan found a site hosted by a conservative Christian investment group which rated recently-released videogames on their child-unfriendly content. Dan was offended by what he saw as a narrow-minded attempt to apply morality to video games – but I think I have to agree with the first commenter, who saw the Timothy Plan’s list as a resource that can be used by parents who want to know what’s in the games their kids are playing. (Halo doesn’t rate high enough to make their ‘graphic guide’ – it scored only a 6 out of a possible 39, with points for mild sexuality (presumably the naked Cortana), medium violence and bad language, and mild game addiction.) While I’m usually unhappy with the way videogames are portrayed in general by the Christian right, in this case, I’d have to say the guide can be useful if you’re a parent who worries about these things (and doesn’t play enough games to find out directly).(Louis Wu 15:25:45 UTC)

Real7alk Podcast #5
RandomSauce sent word that the fifth Real7alk.com podcast is out – it’s a monster, nearly 2 hours long. You can grab it from their podcast feed – it’s 135 mb, and contains an interview with Hawty McBloggy, a new song from Bryan Simon, and an interview with the Halo 3 Mythbusters! (I’m only a few minutes into it so far; something about crunchy socks. Looking forward to the rest, though!)(Louis Wu 23:44:06 UTC)

Animatedly Yours
There’s a new ‘Breaking In’ article up at Bungie.net – Tam Armstrong, one of Bungie’s Animation Engineers, talks about what he does and how he got there. It’s not really Halo-related, but it’s an interesting read – so go read it! (If you’re looking to follow in his footsteps… I’m pretty sure the bike crash isn’t a critical move.)(Louis Wu 22:57:00 UTC)

Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena Trailer
This trailer should also be known as “nerdgasm.” I don’t know how many of you checked out the original “Escape from Butcher Bay” game on the original Xbox, but it was definitely a classic game I still keep.
It really was ahead of its time for an FPS. It combined platforming, first person fist-fights, puzzles, RPG-ish sidequests and was also the first XBox game to use normal mapping, and looked great for it. I’m definitely pumped for the possibility of a new Riddick game(I try to forget the horrible 2nd movie in the franchise and just think about Pitch Black).
