Gears of War 2: Update 2 Now Available
Today, at 2AM PST, the new title update for Gears of War 2 has dropped. It features a huge laundry list of glitch/bug fixes, and some much needed ones at that. I’d list all the fixes, but there’s quite a few of them. Check Rod Fergusson’s post on the Epic forums for the full list of fixes. It definitely addresses some bugs I hated in Gears of War 2 Multiplayer.
However, this is not the only thing Rod posted about, or updated Gears 2 with. Read on.
Some other changes made to the game aim to better balance the game. One change in particular is now proximity grenades are much easier to shoot off, as Epic has reduced their health by 50%. Grenades do not spawn as frequently, and Epic has also increased the penalty for quitters. The flamethrower now has stopping power, and interrupts someone trying for the noobish chainsaw. Another change is you can’t shoot coming out of a roadie run. On Hail, the grenade spawns have been changed so both teams have access to both types of nades. The last balancing issue they made was “additional spawn protection” so you can’t get naded or chainsawed right when you spawn. Also, they have added 7 new achievements. However, you must have the new Gears 2 DLC, the Combustible Map Pack, as well as the Flashback Map Pack that came with every copy of the game. Here is a list of the achievements:
* “Skeletons in Your Closet” (20 points): Complete waves 1 through 10 on all Flashback Map Pack maps in Horde (any difficulty).
* “Trial by, and on, Fire” (20 points): Complete waves 1 through 10 on all Combustible Map Pack maps in Horde (any difficulty).
* “More Mystery, Less History” (15 points): Win a multiplayer match on each of the 5 Flashback Map Pack maps (any mode except Wingman).
* “The Roof! The Roof! The Roof…” (15 points): Win a multiplayer match on each of the 3 Combustible Map Pack maps (any mode except Wingman).
* “Bound by a Shared Past” (15 points): Win a Wingman match on each of the 5 Flashback Map Pack maps.
* “Forged in the Fire” (15 points): Win a Wingman match on each of the 3 Combustible Map Pack maps.
* “Annex: Now with Execution Rules” (75 points): Win an Annex match on each of the Flashback and Combustible Map Pack maps (Public only).[Rod Fergusson’s Post on the Epic Forums]

It took a bit longer than expected, but the January Matchmaking Update is now live (it has been since late last night). Swing by Bungie.net for full details on the changes (they were posted before, but it’s nice to have everything in one place).(Louis Wu 16:33:00 UTC)

Unworlding
Over at Ascendant Justice, Vociferous has added another masterful article – this one is called ‘Unworlding’, and it looks at the Great Journey. It begins with a decent piece of fan fiction… and continues on to an exhaustive look at all the information currently available about the birth of the IDEA of the Great Journey. Plenty of solid investigative work, coupled with some deft speculation, leads to a well-written, intriguing article that certainly raises additional questions. Go check it out! Thanks to Chris Sauer for the heads-up.(Louis Wu 16:15:09 UTC)

ODST Release Date Speculation at Amazon
onebitrocket noticed that Amazon has posted a placeholder for Halo 3: ODST… and while you shouldn’t trust any release dates that don’t come from the company, it IS the first time we’ve seen anyone even GUESS at a date. (Amazon is listing October 6 as the release.) As things change, we’ll keep you informed.(Louis Wu 15:42:15 UTC)

More Pillar of Autumn Love
Brad McMullen let us know that Stephen Loftus isn’t the only Halo fan obsessed with the Pillar of Autumn – his buddy AlmightyNabeshin, over at DeviantArt, has been posting his own cool PoA pieces. Check out a structural study, a cross-section of the ship (color-coded for functionality), and a pretty cool front-end view (not quite finished). Nice work! (Louis Wu 14:57:50 UTC)

Playing Halo (ODST Remix)
Ryan Hamilton stopped by to announce a Halo song he created – it’s called ‘Playing Halo (ODST Remix)’, and it’s available on his MySpace page. Unfortunately, the page doesn’t display correctly unless you’re using IE on a Windows box – which leaves a lot of users (Mac users, Firefox users, etc) out in the cold. We’ve grabbed a local copy of the MP3 – you can download it from our server (2.5 mb). (If Ryan has a problem with this, we’ll certainly take it back down.) (Louis Wu 14:46:56 UTC)
