  • Podtacular 422: It’s Elementary

    Download
We were supposed to start our discussions for our Halo 5 roundtables this week, but due to some scheduling conflicts for the people we were getting on, we are going to try again next week. Not to worry though; there’s still plenty of Halo news out there besides the matchmaking update in the weekly Halo Bulletin. Halo Waypoint tweeted out a Minecraft image with a Master Chief Steve skin, a Halo in the sky and what seems to be some custom Halo-themed blocks that hints at a Halo mash-up pack for Minecraft on Xbox. More rumors are floating around the Xbox press conference that will take place at E3 this year. A new Legendary speed-run for the Halo PC campaign was achieved and element 117 was discovered.

  • The Forefathers of the Space Squirrel

Former Bungie environment artist Paul Russel tweeted out some creatures and vehicles that never made it into final version of Halo 1. Marcus Lehto later jumped into the conversation and shared a few more things from the vault. Some of this stuff we’ve seen before, but it’s always nice to take a look at what could have been. If you take the time to read through the conversation you might even gain a little insight into the development of Halo 1. Thanks, Grizzlei. (mastrbiggy 20:36:31 UTC)

  • Halo 5 Shows Up In Xbox Trailer

Microsoft’s recently released Xbox One trailer has a little surprise at the 51 second mark – ‘Halo 5 Infinity Slayer on Haven’ appears in the Xbox activity feed. This raised the collective Halo internet eyebrow, but 343i was quick to clarify. As you might have guessed, the image is simply a placeholder. Thanks, Kermit.(mastrbiggy 20:15:23 UTC)

  • It’s Wednesday, right?

Once again, way late… but hey, sometimes we forget. This week’s Halo Bulletin went live on Wednesday (as usual)… and it’s worth a read. A great speedrun, playlist updates, new elements, and some slick screenshots – go read! (It’s local, too – as usual.) (Louis Wu 20:07:57 UTC)

  • Kotobukyia Master Chief Statue

Waypoint posted a handful of pictures of Kotobukyia’s 12-inch Master Chief statue – it looks pretty slick! Thanks, thebruce0.(mastrbiggy 19:47:49 UTC)

  • New Master Chief Statue revealed by Kotobukiya!

    From Kotobukiya:

The fans demanded it, and now Kotobukiya triumphantly returns to the best-selling Halo series with an all new Master Chief ARTFX Statue, available in November! Stepping right out of Halo 4, the mega popular video game character wears his MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor and strides down a high tech ramp in a Forerunner facility. The Chief carries his trusty Battle Rifle and comes equipped with two sets of interchangeable arms that let you pose the hero with weapon at the ready or held over his shoulder with a frag grenade in the other hand! The intricately sculpted armor captures every detail you know from the game with screen accurate detail from Chief’s two-tone green armor to his iconic gold hued visor. There’s even limited articulation at the neck and waist so you can create your own poses! Sculpted by M.I.C., Master Chief ARTFX stands nearly 12 inches tall and makes for a perfect centerpiece for your Halo collection. Watch for more ARTFX and ARTFX+ Halo statues coming soon from Kotobukiya!

  • Finally, A Halo Terrain Editor

Compton dropped by to let us know that Halo Waypoint tweeted a picture of a Minecraft Master Chief. Apparently Halo content is coming to Minecraft for Xbox – weird.(mastrbiggy 20:24:23 UTC)

  • All Units 2?

Joystiq published an article highlighting that Microsoft is looking for an experienced designer to work on an ‘established and well-loved strategy game franchise’. My guess is that Microsoft is referring to Age of Empires. The fact that Microsoft is building an entire team also makes me doubtful that this is related to Halo Wars – though, one can hope. Thanks, MacGyver(mastrbiggy 20:09:44 UTC)

  • The Halo Bulletin: 5.7.14

Years ago, I remember sitting in the comfort of my East Coast home, with a not-so-comfortable N64 controller in hand, repeatedly playing GoldenEye 007’s third mission, Runway. It was the shortest mission in the game, and while I would sometimes roam around in the tank waiting for wave after wave (Firefight, anyone?) of fly-swatting guards to slowly kneel down and take aim, other times I’d look to beat the level as quickly as I possibly could. I’d cut every corner, grab the ignition key from the front of the table, and make a beeline run to the single-engine propeller plane at the end of the asphalt. My (not-so-well-executed) pursuit of the 0:22 world record for the mission was one of my first attempts at speed running, and I loved the intricacies and particulars of how players shaved off a second here and there. Reading tips, tricks, and top times from the world’s quickest runners (and then trying to get those times myself) gave me a real respect for the art that is speed running.

Just this past week, we watched Andrew “goatrope” Halabourda take some time off of his Halo: Combat Evolved Legendary world record speedrun, and set a new 1:38:57 world record. We’d like to congratulate Andrew on his new time, and also thank him for sharing the stream with the world. goatrope’s commentary is insightful, brilliant, and funny, and the gameplay is full of countless tricks, triple grenade jumps, backpack reloads, and much, much more. To see the latest Halo speedrun world record, check out the video below – you won’t be disappointed.

  • Halo Legendary in 1:38:27

It was only a few months ago that goatrope set the record for speed running Halo 1 on easy, now he has set the record for speed running Halo 1 on legendary. The entire 1:38:57 run is available on YouTube – pretty impressive! goatrope also put together a document detailing every trick he uses when speed running. (mastrbiggy 10:01:32 UTC)

  • New Speedrun World Record Set For Halo: Combat Evolved

Andrew “goatrope” Halabourda has beaten his own Halo: Combat Evolved speedrun world record! On May 2, Andrew finished the game on Legendary in one hour and thirty-eight minutes, a few minutes faster than the previous record he set. He’s calculated in every move he makes – he uses carefully timed grenade jumps to bypass certain areas and his knowledge of the game is astounding. Even more impressive: he’s able to hold conversations with people in the chatroom. Talk about talent!

Congratulations to Andrew and his new world record!

  • Spartan Laser Render

Vico came across some Spartan Laser renders by 343i environment artist Jeremiah Strong. Before you jump to any conclusions about the next Halo, Frankie stated that this is from Jeremiah’s personal reel. Still, it’s a pretty neat take on the Splaser. (mastrbiggy 20:22:26 UTC)

  • Podtacular 421: Over Expansion

    Download
Sometimes things don’t quite go as planned during the week and cascading effects start to roll over things we have scheduled. This week was victim to one such occurrence, so we don’t quite start on the full fledged Halo 5 series, but we do discuss our thoughts about where the franchise is going and the implications of Halo 5 were indeed coming out next year. While everyone would love to have the next Halo experience soon, we feel it would be best if 343 took the time to really nail the Halo experience for the next installment. You can listen to our thoughts on the topic in this week’s episode. We also touch on the mention of a Halo drama in the works with Showtime. Whether or not this is related to either of the existing projects is still unclear, but it does beg the question of how much time and effort is being spent outside developing the game. And of course we talk about the latest in Matchmaking news from this week’s Halo Bulletin.
