The latest news about the Halo series of games from Microsoft

  • Pulling the wrappers off

Yesterday, the latest Halo Bulletin went up on Halo Waypoint – you’ll find wallpaper from the Halo 5 concept art, new matchmaking details, a pretty amazing facepainter, and some cool shotgun screenshots. Give it a read! (You can read it here, too. Of course.)(Louis Wu 14:42:29 UTC)

  • Fan take on Halo menu music

Yesterday, Wahrer stopped by with an audio experiment; he put together a piece he calls ‘Halo 5: Guardians – Main Menu (Mockup)‘. Lots of eastern vibes in there. Go listen!(Louis Wu 14:35:23 UTC)

  • The Halo Bulletin: 5.21.14

It’s 2:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Friday, May 16. After about an hour of sleep, my alarm goes off, but for the first time in weeks, and possibly months, I don’t hit the snooze button. Instead, I jump out of bed, throw a hoodie on, grab my backpack and keys, and I’m out the door. After a quick, foggy-eyed drive down the road, I swipe my badge at the door, and find a (mostly empty) studio, with a few fellow members of the Community team already at their desks. It was time to announce the title of the next installment in the legendary saga of the Master Chief, Halo 5: Guardians.

Last week’s announcement was, as Frankie said, a big weight off of our shoulders. For nearly a year, you’ve been wanting to know more about the future of Halo on Xbox One, and being able to finally announce this title, along with releasing some visuals, was exciting to say the least. Seeing the immediate response, analysis of the visuals and name itself, as well as all of the new discussions that emerged was overwhelming. We were thrilled to join in on the long-awaited excitement and conversation for the first time since last year. We’ll be able (and can’t wait) to share details about what’s coming for the Halo franchise in 2014 in just a few short weeks at E3.

Last week, we released some exclusive Halo 5: Guardians wallpapers (you can snag ‘em here), and today, due to requests from you, the community, we prepared wallpapers of Friday’s concept art from our very own Sparth. Download below, and beautify your screens.

Next up, we’ve got some Matchmaking goodies as well as community creations. Let’s dig in!

  • Spin That Wheel

DHalo noticed a pretty entertaining comic on Tumble Dry Comics; anyone who’s followed Halo’s Needler through the various titles in the series will be able to relate. (Louis Wu 22:50:52 UTC)

  • Halo 4 Co-op Campaign Antics

MixMaker117, Dijabouti, HaloFanForLife, and SEspider got together to play some Halo 4 campaign on Legendary and ended up capturing some pretty funny moments. I’m pretty sure this video could use some Benny Hill music. Thanks, SEspider – go watch! (mastrbiggy 22:42:27 UTC)

  • I’m a $10 typo

I nearly forgot to point out the latest Community Member Spotlight over at Halo Waypoint – which would be a shame, because it’s shining on our boy wonder mastrbiggy. He’s so dreamy I can almost forgive all the mean things he says about me. (Almost.) Go read it.(Louis Wu 23:38:43 UTC)

  • Teaming with Problems

Red vs Blue Episode 4 was released yesterday – what makes a good leader? And how do you pick them? And what happens when you swallow too much spit? Watch to find out.(Louis Wu 16:34:14 UTC)

  • Halo Community Member Spotlight: Mastrbiggy

Every other Monday, we feature a community member who does one or more of the following things: routinely goes above and beyond for their fellow forum members and/or is a positive and active member of the community. This week the spotlight turns to Mastrbiggy!

Question: What’s your gamertag and its origin?

Answer: My gamertag is Mastrbiggy. I’ve gone through a handful of gamertag changes. My first gamertag was zippy101. I ended up changing it to Mastrbiggy because I had a dachshund whose nickname was Biggy. I originally just wanted Biggy, but Xbox gave me suggestions like Misterbiggy. I decided on Masterbiggy because of Master Chief. If you read any of my posts or tweets you’ll know that I have a habit for making typos. Mastrbiggy was a $10 typo. Most people just call me biggy or buggy anyway.

Q: Tell us about the first time you played Halo.

A: The first time I played Halo was December 2001. I vividly recall seeing that very first TV commercial for the game and knew I had to play it. My friend and I made a deal that one of us would purchase a PS2 for GTA 3 and the other would buy an Xbox for Halo. He managed to get an Xbox and I spent the majority of my free time at his house playing Halo co-op. His parents weren’t exactly thrilled with the amount of lunches they ended up providing. I remember that I used to have dreams about having my own Xbox to play Halo. It wasn’t until the end of summer that I saved up enough money by washing neighborhood cars and trading in my PS2 for an Xbox and Halo: CE. Good times.

  • Halo Mash-Up Pack

PlayXBLA has got quite a bit of information regarding the Halo mash-up pack for Minecraft – looks like a decent amount of Halo themed content is making its way to Minecraft. There are also a couple screenshots showing off Noble team skins, a Mammoth, and a Guilty Spark skin. Check it out!(mastrbiggy 21:16:50 UTC)

  • Serious Halo Schwag

Noah Gallup (a name that might ring a bell for some longer-term Halo fans) has a bunch of Halo memorabilia that he’s decided to sell – you can swing by eBay to see the links. There are some very rare and very interesting pieces – a Joyride Series 1 Cortana figure, a pair of really amazing Muckle Master Chiefs (I have one, they’re gorgeous), and more. For the serious collector, this cache is absolutely worth exploring. Some of the auctions have nearly a week left, while others have only a couple of days – so look soon! (As a side note, writing this has made me realize that Noah’s 2005 video was one of the casualties of a server loss in 2010 – I’m going to look into putting a new copy online soon. I don’t have a digital version left, but I’m pretty sure I still have one of the DVDs. It was a fascinating view of a Halo fan’s excitement for Halo 2’s release.) (Louis Wu 16:50:33 UTC)

  • Halo 3 AI Battle – Sword Elites vs Brute Chieftains

Gamecheat’s back with another AI battle – this time, it’s Halo 3 Sword Elites versus Brute Chieftans. I found it fascinating. I’m not sure how to discuss the parts I liked the best without actually giving away the overall winner, but I can tell you that even the Bonus Rounds were pretty fun. Go watch. (Louis Wu 14:51:05 UTC)

  • Podtacular 423: Guardians Unite

Dust Storm sent word that Podtacular’s coverage of the Halo 5: Guardians announcement is now online. Seven community members (representing Ready Up Live, Guardian Radio, GrifballHub, Halo Collector, Beyond Entertainment, /r/Halo, and Halo Dispatch) were on hand to help with the analysis – go listen to this nearly three-hour monster!(Louis Wu 14:48:59 UTC)

  • Several Labors of Love

I ran across this cosplay pic from Kitnip Cosplay and DMacStudios recently – I was impressed! Check out the Spartans and ODSTs. And their weapons! (Louis Wu 14:47:26 UTC)

  • Podtacular 423: Guardians Unite

    Download
Yesterday, thousands of Halo fans were united in celebrating the announcement of Halo 5: Guardians. Master Chief’s journey continues Fall 2015, but people are already excited and speculating on where Chief’s journey is taking him, who is this new Spartan depicted in the teaser image and dissecting every pixel of the concept art posted by Frankie. Even knowing so little about the game, the recent actions of 343 have not gone unnoticed and Bonnie Ross’s statement about embracing the community has given Halo fans a new spark to gleam on. Epic news of epic proportions calls for an epic podcast, so we pulled some of the best minds from the Halo community to talk about this monumental announcement. Joining us is Greenskull (@Greenskull) from Ready Up Live, Mark Turcotte (@MarkTurc) from Guardian Radio, Vanirfreyja  (@Vanirfreyja) from GrifballHub and the former BigTeamBattle.net, Laird (@LairdSVF) from Halo Collector, SaUcEySOARS (@SaUcEySOARS) from Beyond Entertainment, Matty McDee (@MattyMcDee) from /r/Halo, and lastly Chance King (@HaloDispatch) from Halo Dispatch.  Make sure to check out all of our guests and their sites and show your support for the Halo community.

  • Red vs Blue – the Catch-up Edition

Another thing we’ve totally missed these past couple of weeks is the continuation of Red vs Blue Season 12. This series has evolved quite a bit; storytelling, music, and the combination of machinima and CGI are all quite sophisticated at this point. Caboose still makes me laugh, but some of the new characters are really interesting, and the plot is compelling. If you haven’t been following, Episode 2 (Hit and Run) went live on May 5, and Episode 3 (Something Else Entirely) hit the web on May 12. Go catch up – the next installment launches on Monday!(Louis Wu 16:53:26 UTC)

  • Fails of the Weak 191

Yesterday was Friday, so it was time for another Fails of the Weak – Ray and Jack looked at a bunch of bad playing (mostly on Reach). I liked the last Bullfrogs clip. Watch it on AH.com or YouTube, and say thanks to Nikko B201 for pointing it out.(Louis Wu 16:42:36 UTC)

  • Rebuilding the Series for XB1

Engadget has a story (unconfirmed at this point) about a product called ‘Halo: The Master Chief Collection’ – Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4 are being put together in a remaster for Xbox One. Details on what that means, exactly, are pretty sketchy (and MS isn’t even acknowledging that the project exists). More when we know it! Thanks to Gravemind, who noticed this at IGN.(Louis Wu 16:39:47 UTC)

  • Spielberg Halo vehicle launching late next year

IGN has some info about the Steven Spielberg-produced Halo series coming to Xbox One – looks like it’ll be released in the same timeframe as Halo 5. That’s a lot of prep time! Thanks, Avateur.(Louis Wu 16:35:36 UTC)

  • Escalation #9 – Cover and Summary

Quirel noticed that the cover for Escalation #9 has been posted over at Comic Book Resources – looks like SOMEONE might be back in action! (The episode isn’t due to hit shelves until August, so you’ve got a little time to anticipate…)(Louis Wu 16:32:20 UTC)

  • Maybe Waypoint should switch to Saturdays

Not sure how I managed to miss it this week, since I was back in internet land by Wednesday… but somehow, the Weekly Halo Bulletin came and went without an acknowledgement. If you haven’t read it yet, you should go take a look. There’s information on Matchmaking changes, an interesting Knowledge Drop (comprised of Twitter-originated questions about the Halo universe and answers from the 343 team), and a screenshot spotlight on that most underrated weapon, the Sticky Detonator. As always, there’s a local copy, should you need it. Sorry for the delay!(Louis Wu 16:24:45 UTC)
