  • Species Ep 1 – now in hi-res

    by

    in
Last week, we posted a note about Species, a series from the MjR37 Team – and we hosted a pair of versions of the first episode. Over the weekend, they released a hi-res version of this episode – so we’re hosting that, too. It’s not only re-rendered as 720×480 – they’ve also tweaked it for flow, humor, and improved action. If you didn’t download it before, now’s a great time. If you DID grab a copy last week, but wished you could see some of those explosions in higher resolution… here’s your chance. WMP9 version is 109 mb, QuickTime version is 100 mb. Grab a copy, then swing by the MjR37 website and check out other episodes!(Louis Wu 12:06:10 UTC)

  • Test Halo 3 Spoiler

This is a test Halo 3 spoiler. You should not be able to see it.

  • Is That Thunder, Or Are You Hungry For Brains?

With Halo 3 not only stealing the thunder from every other game on the Xbox or Xbox 360, but personally tasked by Bill Gates with submarining the PlayStation 3 launch (guess he didn’t know about the proposed $600 price tag, or else he wouldn’t have bothered) it’s not surprising that a little studio called Wideload that made a funny little game called Stubbs the Zombie might, for at least, awhile, go unnoticed.

Stubbs sold well enough, to be sure, but the gaming press often spoke more about the studio’s outsourcing-heavy business model than the game itself. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

So while the hype over Halo is such that Bungie gets taken to task by supposed fans even when they don’t say a word (because saying nothing is the best way to hype a game, didn’t you know?) then the silence must be deafening in Chicago, where Wideload was actually able to update their website last month without scarcely causing a ripple.

  • Bungie Update: AI Gunners Will Be Smarter… Maybe

According to Frankie in Bungie’s latest Weekly Update, the artificial intelligence in current builds of Halo 3 seems to be quite a step up from the previous games.

The progression of talent in Bungie’s AI drivers is well-documented; marines, for instance, could only handle Ghosts in Halo 1, often with disastrous results. Vehicles were thrown open to all kinds of units in Halo 2, as marines would drive Warthogs and Scorpions if given the chance, Grunts would take turns in Ghosts if opportunity arose. Having a passenger (preferably with a sniper weapon or a rocket launcher) as well as someone manning the chaingun in the Hog really gave the vehicle quite a presence.

Gunners in Halo 2 were often not quite as effective as they might have been. There was no real way to control what they were firing at, except to get closer to the intended target. Often they’d ignore clearly visible enemies because they were “out of range”– even though the weapon itself would have been quite effective.

And Frankie says that’s getting better in Halo 3:

In previous Halo games, the gunners were smart and would pick off targets in a logical fashion, but this time around, and it could be my imagination, the gunners are more precise and easier to influence. You can target individual bad guys by steering the Hog and even “convince” your gunner to pick a more relevant target and have him stop trying to blast a lone grunt hiding behind a rock when a bigger menace approaches.

    [snip]

The AI still has ages of tuning left to go, and the bad news is that if your AI gunner is too good, he’ll be dumbed-down to make the game more balanced. That said, the scale and ferocity of the current encounters (read: more bad guys than ever before) mean that you were going to need more capable AI anyway.

  • Halogen Team Is Not Giving Up

The previously Halo-themed mod for Command & Conquer Generals might not have a Bungie flavor anymore, but the request to cease development using Halo intellectual property does not mean the project is dead.

Halogen lead Dispraiser said in an interview with GameSetWatch:

Luckily, though, everyone on our team is devoted. When I posted in the staff forums about the email, the thread was titled “What now?” not “It’s over” or anything of the doomed sort. Most of our models are original units, including every structure but two, and even some vehicles. In fact, some of our most popular units, the Skyhawk, Hammerhead and Firefly, are all original units that we designed. Without saying too much, I hope everyone doesn’t leave and miss the real show…Definitely keep your eyes on Slipstream Productions and the ex-Halogen crew.

So it looks like Halogen– whatever it eventually ends up being called– won’t be Halo-themed, but fans will get a chance to play it.

  • Dispraiser discusses Halogen Cancellation

    by

    in
Over at GameSetWatch a few days ago, there was an interview with Dispraiser, the leader of the Halogen crew, discussing the shutdown of their project by Bungie and Microsoft. It’s a pretty positive read, overall; they don’t sound too bitter about the situation, and it’s almost certain that SOMETHING will come out of the work they’ve done – just not something Halo-related. Keep your eyes open!(Louis Wu 15:14:56 UTC)

  • Spartans in San Francisco

    by

    in
Saturday Night must be movie night. We’ve got one more for you… then it’s off to bed. This Spartan Life whipped up a new Video Blog (Blog 6), showing off their trip to San Francisco this summer. Awesome cameo by Marty O’Donnell. (This went up yesterday, but I thought we were waiting for a WMP9 version before announcing it. Apparently not – so it’s QuickTime only. 11.6 mb.)(Louis Wu 02:59:10 UTC)

  • Hell Sounds

    by

    in
Incogneto45 submitted ‘Hell Sounds’ to the MPRRS – it’s a clip from the Art Bell radio show ‘Coast to Coast’, filmed in Halo. A little odd, yeah… but nicely done! Available in WMP9 format (16.2 mb) or QuickTime format (15 mb).(Louis Wu 02:56:03 UTC)

  • Lost: Halostyle Ep 8 – Stale Mate

    by

    in
Lost: Halostyle Episode 8, ‘Stale Mate’, passed the MPRRS today – they’ve kept the humor, increased the polish of the production, added some pretty neat effects. Great work – funny episode! Go watch. 43.9 mb in WMP9 format, 44.9 mb in QuickTime format.(Louis Wu 02:40:23 UTC)

  • Private 724

    by

    in
Evan Ryan, of Krad Productions, sent us a link to a movie he’d made – It’s called ‘Private 724’, and you can find it at FileFront. (There’s a version at Machinima.com, as well – but it’s just a draft render; the FileFront version is the final. If the Machinima page says “36 mb”, it hasn’t been swapped yet.) An uneasy truce explodes from a single misunderstanding… there is no dialogue in this video, but it doesn’t suffer a bit from the absence. Powerful cinematography… give it a look! 43 mb, in WMP9 format.(Louis Wu 02:14:27 UTC)

  • Marathon Logo in Qatar

    by

    in
Schedonnardus noticed a banner that shows up on the main page of the Texas A&M University Campus in Qatar which shows a building which shows a building that contains a design that looks a lot like the Marathon logo. (This really belongs on the Marathon’s Story page… but Hamish isn’t really updating that any more, so I’m posting this. It doesn’t mean I’m gonna post the next 50, though.)(Louis Wu 21:44:17 UTC)

  • H2Vista.net, and the Yoyorast Island Race Contest

    by

    in
TheGhost wrote to remind people about the Yoyorast Island Race Contest – we mentioned it a couple of weeks ago, but it’s since moved to a more permanent home, at H2Vista.net. TheGhost would also like to encourage anyone who is interested in Halo 2 Vista modding or map making to sign up at the forums.(Louis Wu 21:32:32 UTC)

  • Security Alert

It has been brought to our attention that someone is sending fake emails form “bungie.com” (we’re actually Bungie.net and we never email you about your account details or security.) and we have to assume the sender of the mails, often with a zip file attachment, is up to no good. Simply delete and ignore them and never, ever open a file from a sender you don’t know or trust.

  • Were you in Rec E?

Some dork on staff in Rec E just booted everyone. TerminatorLlama, the overlord, just put everyone as peon in response, so it won’t happen again. If you were in that clan and want back in, it’s easy as pie. Just post your gamertag in the request a clan invite page and write that you were in Rec E. We’ll get you another invite ASAP.
