First Person Perspective Warthog
Yesterday morning, RVideo posted a cool movie showing a first-person view from a Warthog; it’s not true first-person, but a modified chasecam perspective that simulates a first-person view. His forum post explains what you’re looking at (and the problems involved in collecting the footage). He released this in DivX 6.4 format (link is in the forum post), but if that’s a problem for you, I’ve reencoded QuickTime (53.7 mb) and WMP9 (49.2 mb) versions that we’re hosting; grab whichever one works best for you.(Louis Wu 23:28:06 UTC)

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

From HBOThe Heart is a Lonely Hunter is probably the best Halo machinima ever made. I think Louis Wu said it best when the movie was released about 2.2 years ago.
Every once in a while, a Halo movie comes along that’s head and shoulders above almost everything else out there. Great filmography, awesome sound, fantastic voice acting… if you look back on all of the Halo machinima creations that have been released (we’re not talking music videos now, or gameplay presentations), there are only a couple that are up there in a class that can stand alone, be of interest OUTSIDE the Halo community. (Red vs Blue is probably the most prominent example.) Now (in my opinion), there’s a new one. ‘The Heart is a Lonely Hunter’ is a 30-minute movie which has it all; great acting, great storyline, great cinematography, great music, great effects. Humor and pathos, all rolled into a Halo-driven package.
Beware, everyone, this movie is teh hueg. 30 minutes long, almost 130 megs for the PSP version. If you want, I can try to shrink it to under 120 megs. Or, you can download it to your PC. The format was 320×240 anyway, so it should look pretty good just watching it.

Given that it is longer and more up-front with its new content than the TV ad, I think a frame by frame analysis, in most places, is unwarranted, so instead I thought I would cherry-pick a few notable quotations or bits of information, and add my own commentary.

Brute Vidoc

From BungleBungie’s started making video documentaries, which they have shortened to “Vidocs,” about… well, stuff. They’re professional, and are similar to the FilmOasis stuff we have seen before. This specific one is about the role brutes will play in Halo 3, and it shows some campaign footage, and a bunch of sandbox footage. Absolutely worth the download.
On a more personal note, I got into a mild motorcycle accident, and broke my hand. I couldn’t type for a while, so that’s why there haven’t been as many videos as there could be. To make up for it, I’ll stick a classic machinima vid up tomorrow.
On an even more personal note, Mintz sucks. [Edit by Mintz: Yes.]
Also, I’m going to up the bitrate on the iPod movie next time, and see if that makes it better.

Brute Doc Analysis
Mark MacDonald, of GameVideos.com, gave us a heads-up about a new analysis video they’ve posted, picking apart the Brute Vidoc in minute detail. Downloadable versions are in the hundreds of megabytes, or you can stream it on their site. Another Way into the Beta
Interesting. Over at Joystiq, there’s a note about an ad in the latest issue of Gamepro magazine – if you buy the upcoming game Crackdown (specially marked boxes only) for $60, you also get a Halo 3 Beta invite. (Joystiq’s cynical take is that you’re paying $60 for the invite, and getting a free copy of Crackdown… but you can think of it any way you like.)
