ASE Ep. 131 Marathon EVIL 9: A million ways to spend your time
We’ve finished with the canonical Marathon Trilogy and are moving on to third party scenarios, starting with EVIL. In this scenario, a UESC ship from Tau Ceti runs into a spatial anomaly that sends them far away where we encounter something dark and evil.
Our job here is to destroy the facility (built inside a volcano) by causing it to fill with lava. Aren’t volcanoes already filled with lava?
I’m still not sure if we played this level the right way or not. My idea was that the four lava gates need to be destroyed in order to progress; they made noise when shot. I thought maybe they looked more significant with the original textures, or displayed damage, but I went back again with all HD textures off, and they don’t. Instead, Blackstar managed to do the grenade hop I failed, and we completed the level that way.
EVIL can be played, like the other Marathon games, using the open source Aleph One engine which you can get here for Windows, Mac and Linux:
EVIL and other third party scenarios for the Aleph One engine can be downloaded here:

We use irons’ Co-Op script, which gives weapons and ammo to both players if either picks any up, and prevents weapon loss on death (so items can’t be destroyed in lava or slime). The script also allows one player to teleport to a destination set by themselves or their partner, in case co-op players run into a problem a solo player would have to restart for.

The Halo Bulletin: 9.17.14
Over the past few weeks, you’ve been asking to see more of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. You’ve asked for footage from each game, glorious Gungoose gameplay, and (lots) more. Just today, we released a sneak peek at a bit more goodness in the form of Halo 2: Anniversary screenshots, video footage from Halo 2: Anniversary and Halo 3 on Xbox One. Let’s start by taking a look at some brand new shots, hot off the presses! We formatted them wallpaper sizes, which may help hold you over until November, or may instead have the reverse effect and make November seem that much further away. Either way, we hope you like ‘em.

Multiple Choice
Speaking of Red vs Blue, Episode 17 of Red vs Blue Season 12 went live this week – and while it’s light on humor, it moves the storyline along nicely. Just two more episodes – there’s a lot of wrapping up to do!(Louis Wu 13:45:18 UTC)

Let’s Play Destiny Co-Op #6: The Dark Beyond
Blackstar and Narcogen are picking up with playing Destiny in co-op mode with the first moon mission: The Dark Beyond. (The Cosmodrome story missions and strike seem largely unchanged from the beta test, at least at their lower difficulty levels).
CORRECTION: I misidentify the text on the structures in this video. It is Chinese, not Japanese.
We venture into Hive territory to find a fallen Guardian and track down its Ghost.

Podtacular 441: The Pax Prime Lockdown
Two weeks ago, Pax Prime was in full swing in Seattle as we heard of the news that Lockdown, the remake of Lockout, has officially been added to the list of Halo 2 Anniversary Maps coming with the Master Chief Collection. We got our hands on the map on the show floor that weekend and were very pleased with the additions and the feel the map retained from the original Halo 2 classic. The Pax Prime Showdown was a spectacular to watch with Team eXcellence taking home the first place prize. During the Halo panel, we got more information on Nightfall, Forge in Halo 2 Anniversary, the new music and audio being introduced in the remastered Halo 2 Campaign and even witnessed a proposal on stage (She said, “Yes,” BTW). This week, we are privileged to have community member Hoss Sauced join us on the podcast.

Master Chief: The Story You Never Knew
So… Treesicle published ‘Master Chief: The Story You Never Knew‘ back in May – but the first I heard about it was today, when ChrisTheeCrappy mentioned it on our forum. It’s an analysis of the Halo storyline… with special care shown to our friendly neighborhood green-clad Spartan. It jumps from jokes to serious thought with abandon – but it’s pretty solid thinking (except for maybe the lumberjack stuff). Go watch! (Louis Wu 22:03:59 UTC)
