More LAN reportage
rapture wrote up his own version of the Undead JANLAN 2007 event last weekend (the one Mintz went to only to get a front-page mention for) – comments can go either after the story itself, or in response to his forum post.(Louis Wu 15:01:15 UTC)

MLG Content
Tons of new stuff at MLGPro.com – you’ll find Player Match Commentary from Strongside (it’s currently the default video), plus Part II and Part III of the 2006 Halo Retrospective, plus the Division I Quarterfinal Wrap-up. That should keep you busy… (Louis Wu 14:54:27 UTC)

A Small Experiment
Just so viewers know, I’ve enabled an interstitial ad on the site. It’s the first such ad requested on the site, through the AdBrite service, which I haven’t actively used since mid-2005; I found that Google AdWords was sufficient to chip in enough small change to make me feel that the site isn’t just a huge drag on the server that doesn’t pay for itself. It doesn’t pay for itself, but at least it’s not freeloading.
I’ve enabled this ad mostly to see what it looks like. Supposedly it’s a full page ad shown after three pageviews, and only once a day for each viewer. The site it is advertising seems to be a blogging and discussion site, and seems reasonably safe.
I will be keeping a close eye on this ad; if it really is obnoxious, or the site it actually links to is in any way inappropriate, I will disable it, and if anybody sees the ad and has any comments about it, please feel free.

News Update For January 11, 2007
Not even two weeks into the new year, and real life plus other circumstances have already conspired to let far too much Halo and Bungie material slide by without a mention. So here’s a quick list of what’s been going on:
Community Shuffle
Due to spam attacks, HBO’s forum has had to require users to register. Registration consists, currently, of just entering a password and a nickname when you post, and then remembering that password for future posts (or letting your browser do it for you). Currently no email address or captcha is required, so it’s a lot easier than registering here at Rampancy. If you haven’t already, there’s no excuse not to, and in retrospect it’s amazing Louis Wu was able to keep the forum so open, including what is essentially anonymous posting, for so long.Changes are also afoot at HaloGrid, which is closing its forum for reasons too lengthy to summarize here, so just read the note from imSuck on the front page. There’s also a discussion thread about it in the HBO forum.
Two Seats, No Waiting
The quick and nimble Mongoose ATV, due to appear this year in Halo 3, gets a discussion cum dissection at Bungie.net courtesy of KP, complete with in-game examples of possible uses, specializing on Valhalla.Cross-Dressing For Success
Rumors swirl that Halo 2 Vista players can compete against Xbox players on Live, but Bungie quashes it.Bungie’s Post Of The Year
The post of the year award goes to KP for the post, Bungie.net Year in Review, which was the only post that met the criteria for this award by summarizing all the Bungie related news during the past year. Despite being an employee of Bungie, KP was eligible. As a bonus, this one includes a year’s worth of Mister Chiefs, which is probably the scariest thing on the Internet this side of the average MySpace page.

Hydrogen-injected, my patootie
Over at Bungie.net, you’ll find a detailed summary of the M274 ULATV “Mongoose” – a vehicle we’ve all heard about, but very few have seen in action. What it can do, when you should use it, when you should get your butt off one… it’s all in there. Great read!(Louis Wu 00:33:18 UTC)

The Mongoose
With the invaluable help of Robt. McLees, Bungie formally introduces you to The Mongoose, the newest addition to the UNSC’s ever-expanding arsenal with which to wage war against the Covenant.

An absurd amount of Wallpaper.
I have no idea how this happened, but when I checked last weekend, I noticed that the Wallpapers section hadn’t been updated in over 3 months. !!! During this time, Bungie released the Halo 3 Ad, providing wallpaper creators with a WEALTH of material, it seems – there are 75 distinct new entries in the Wallpaper section today, plus another 3 dozen variations (sizes, colors, etc) – there are more pictures than you can shake a Brute Hammer at. Go browse – and if you see something that even REMOTELY interests you, follow the thumb link; there might be something even better underneath it!(Louis Wu 22:06:05 UTC)

Cat in the Hat, Part II
Paul Maestri is on a comic kick – Cat in the Hat, Part II is the latest Halo Heads. How could you NOT like a comic about exploding cats? (Note: they don’t really explode.)(Louis Wu 18:55:48 UTC)

Early thoughts on the Gears of War patch
I downloaded and installed the Gears of War patch last night and played with 8-10 people on my friends list. The game seemed to play differently than expected. I noticed these differences both on another player’s host and on my host. The biggest differences: The Longshot sniper rifle seems to fire a second shot without reloading, the Gnasher shotgun seemed slightly more powerful (possibly just host advantage), and the Chainsaw seemed to have a longer “reach†(possibly just host advantage).
When I joined up to FoulBreed’s host, I joined into a game on War Machine. As a round was starting I immediately noticed that I could hear everyone, even the players on the team that won the round. As it turns out, in the lobby, everyone can hear everyone now. It used to be that only the players that died during the round could be heard. Of course, people joining up mid-game also be heard; a welcome fix.
I spawned in War Machine and immediately rushed toward the Longshot. I had trouble picking up the weapon. I had to stand over weapon for what seemed like just over a second to pick it up. Later in the match, I noticed the same thing was happening with the Frag Grenades in the middle of the map. When the “Press X to pick up weapon” icon came on my screen, I had to wait about 1.5 seconds to get the grenades. Perhaps I was experiencing lag as I was joined to FoulBreed’s host. A few matches later, the same thing was happening to me. I had to stand still on top of the weapon for about 1.5 seconds to pick it up. However, during some matches, I seemed to be able to pickup the weapons with no problem. I didn’t notice this later in the night when I was hosting. Before the patch, I never experienced this problem.
I noticed that I was having trouble climbing over cover. I had to press “A” four or five times to get over the cover. I’ve had trouble before where the game would play the “climbing†animation two or three times before letting me over the cover. Last night, it seemed even more difficult to navigate around and over cover.
(By the way, I was playing with new batteries in the controller. The controller worked fine in other games and in the XBOX dashboard.)
These problems were all happening on FoulBreed’s host. Perhaps FoulBreed’s host was the problem. Midnight and FoulBreed were playing on the same connection. I think at least one of his brothers was also signed in at the time. Maybe he didn’t have enough upload bandwidth to support all of those outbound connections plus the 8-player game he was hosting? I did get the “Connection Error†popup box in about half of the matches for 1 or 2 seconds.
Another thing that was pointed out to me was that sparda20 couldn’t join up to my host via the invites I sent him. He got a connection error. Sparda has always been able to join up to my host with no problems. The patch did affect NAT settings. In my case, it seemed to have done more harm that good.
Of course, the tagging distance of the Frag grenades was greatly reduced. I’m satisfied with it. The tagging distance seems to be at about an arm’s length. That makes sense and will do for now.
Both Oculus and sparda reported that the Longshot sniper rifle fires a second shot without reloading after two active reloads. This was repeatable for them. I played with the Longshot a couple of times last night and I didn’t notice this change. But, I didn’t test it out after they reported their findings. Can anyone else confirmed?
Animations involving the chainsaw still seemed strange. Last night, and certainly many times before the patch, some of the chainsaw animations didn’t taking place on screen. A person would just explode while hearing the chainsaw revving in the background. I was hoping this would be fixed.
Also, the reach of the chainsaw seemed to be increased by a couple of feet. Perhaps this was symptom of joining up to someone else’s host.
What differences have you noticed?
Thoughts on the night:
* Midnight and FoulBreed are beasts on the same host.
* It sucks spawning in the game, rushing around the map to engage the enemy only to find out that someone inverted your Y-axis during the last LAN.
* Roadie running with a shotgun on host is cheap.
* That is all.

So THAT’S where he’s been!
Bader found a truly bizarre entry over at IMDb; Jason Jones, the Jason Jones that co-founded Bungie, is credited with work as Cecil the Puppet for the TV series ‘Mother Goose and Friends’. Now, IMDb has been known to contain mistakes, and Jason Jones is a pretty common name (there are 15 of them at IMDb alone)… but it’s there, so we’re pointing it out. If we hear more about this, we’ll be sure to update.(Louis Wu 14:17:22 UTC)

Undead JANLAN 2007 Recap
Link dump:
Mintz’s already wrote about the LAN: http://hushedcasket.com/node/1628/
Midnight blogged about it: http://midnight.hushedcasket.com/2007/01/16/gears-of-war-halo-1-lan-at-raptures/
70 photos from the LAN: at Flickr.comThis past Saturday the Hushed Casket held its first epic HALO LAN of 2007 in Huntsville, Alabama. It was massive (over 30 gamers), starting on Saturday morning at 11 AM and lasting until 6 AM on Sunday. That’s 19 hours of hi-def gaming. Travelers made their way to the event by flying in from as far away as California and Philadelphia. Others made the drive from the Auburn and Birmingham areas. While we’ve hosted LANs with more people in attendance in the past, the local Casket community brought the gear, making it the most high-tech and playable LAN to-date. We had nearly two dozen original XBOX and XBOX 360 consoles at the event along with 10 hi-def displays and copious standard-definition displays scattered throughout the home, including a 95” LCD projector display (
The Prey, Phoenix, and Myth trash rapture’s office
For almost the entire time, we LAN’d HALO like it was 2001. Actually, we weren’t running around spraying enemies with Assault Rifles halfway across Blood Gulch, so I guess we LAN’d like it was 2002. We had three 4-v-4 matches running at all times. Our only breaks were to eat the 20 pizzas (click for larger version‘>image), and to watch the lame ending to “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” deep into the night. (Why did we do that, again?) Team Slayer matches to 50- and 100-kills were the norm while sprinkling in the occasional Oddball and Capture the Flag gametypes. Damnation, Chill Out, Hang ‘Em High, Derelict, Beaver Creek and Wizard were played all night long. The night ended with Hog Wars on Blood Gulch in which we were blowing Warthogs across and on top of the map. Yeah. We were pretty delusional by then.
I picked jayWHY up at the airport on Friday. I showed him NASA and the military base before heading to Radio Shack to pick up an audio adapter or two that you-always-need-but-can-never-find when holding a LAN. FoulBreed joined us at the house and he started dishing out the tech goodness: namely two 32” LCD HDTV’s (click for larger version‘>image). He knew this LAN was about to rock. A few minutes later I noticed that people were showing up on time and in great numbers (much unlike our New Year’s Eve party we hosted earlier that week). People arrived so fast that I didn’t know who was arriving and when they arrived. We tried to LAN, but it just wasn’t happening. We couldn’t divide ourselves up into teams. We couldn’t settle on TV’s or consoles.
And then Midnight arrived (click for larger version‘>image).
Mintz was winning a lot of games over on his private LAN. He began to get cocky. Just when we got tired of hearing how Mintz and Frankie are best-friends-forever, how they LAN together ALL the time, how they play Guitar Hero II together, and how he’s got Frankie’s cell phone number, an amazing thing happened. Frankie "supposedly" showed up at the LAN (click for larger version‘>image). What a fun game! On LAN, the game ran smooth and the pistols were lethal. It was a good thing Slayer wasn’t there. I’m not sure that even then we could have handled his nasty Gnasher on LAN. Of course, he probably would have quit out during every other match, so he probably wouldn’t have been effective anyway.
After Gears, we returned to our first love and gamed HALO until the crack of dawn. All was well in the world of the Hushed Casket. We were definitely undead.
Interesting facts for the night:
I didn’t play on Chiron, Boarding Action, or Sidewinder once during the night.
I made the order for everyone’s pizza, yet, I forgot to order for myself.
I now have no H1 or H2 discs. GG, thieves. This LAN was a success because of everyone who brought equipment (click for larger version‘>image) and breaking into Slayer’s perfectly neat bedroom and snatching his gaming gear. Thanks to Mintz’s mom for supplying Mountain Dew ( Next Page
