  • Played Viva Pinata? Tell us what you think of it for episode 97!

Episode 97 is the king of the hill show where we talk about games that are good enough to challenge Halo 2 for the top spot. This game may seem dorky to some people but it has a RABID following and is played a lot by the folks at Bungie I might add. Here’s what we’re looking for, pinata farmers:

    Pinatas: even cooler than samurai

Ok maybe not that cool. But what makes Viva Pinata so cool? Us future soldiers are a bit skeptical. Why smack a pinata on the head with a shovel when you can pwn noobs with a battle rifle? If you’ve got the answer to that question, let us know! Just send us a one or two paragraph mini-review by clicking submit news and tips on the right side. Tell us about whether you can eat the candy in the pinatas, how attracting pinatas works, what makes you keep playing the game, how easy it is, if it’s for kids or adults, what online options there are, what the coolest pinatas are, or maybe a few tips. Be sure to tell us your gamertag so we can give you credit.

    Deadline is Thursday night

at about 5:30pm EST. As usual, the earlier you get in your mini-review, the more likely you’ll get on the show. Hurry up!

  • Gears of War LAN at JANLAN 2007

For a small sliver of time during the monstrous JANLAN 2007, eight THXers committed sacrilege and cranked up Gears of War in the middle of a perfectly good Halo 1 LAN. Yeah, it was risky. It turned out to be a nice change of pace from Halo 1, and we all enjoyed it, but we soon reverted to 3-shot sweet-ness (well…maybe 4-shot).

    New Schoolers in action
    (New schoolers in action)

The roster was Old School vs New School. Mintz, PooBerry, Myth, and Phoenix took on Midnight, Oculus, Reverend, and JDogg/Disavowed. We all played on identical 32″ Westinghouse LCD HDTVs capable of 720p. Four Xbox 360s displayed Gear of War in local multiplayer splitscreen for eight players.

It took a few minutes to get the network configured, as our two switches weren’t talking to each other. However, after some experimenting with the uplink port we managed to establish connectivity. BTW, does anybody really understand the uplink port? If you do, you should be more vocal at LANs, because we always resort to experimentation to get it right when it comes to connecting multiple switches. We also encountered a strange problem with Oculus’s 360 when connecting it via VGA. I deduced the problem quickly: that he normally runs in 1080p and the 32″ Westy couldn’t support that resolution. Solving the problem, however, was more tricky. It turns out that the 360 stores a separate video output setting for use only when the VGA cable is connected. Changing the setting in the dashboard using a component connection will not affect it. Therefore, everytime we changed the dashboard display setting to 720p and then plugged the VGA cable back in, it reverted to 1080p–and no picture. We finally solved it by connecting the 360 to one of rapture’s 22″ LCD monitors with 1080p capability. From there we scaled the resolution down to something the Westy could support and the problem was solved.

    (Old schoolers on 32″ HDTV’s)

The first thing I noticed was that splitscreen was very disorienting. To quote Mr. Horse from Ren and Stimpy in his review of a competing cat litter to Gritty Kitty Cat Litter, “No sir, I don’t like it. I don’t like it at all.” There really isn’t a border between the two half-screens, so my eyes had problems following my own action without noticing the adjacent screen. It also screws up your sensitivity, ala playing Halo 1 on a 16:9 television in widescreen mode. It took about ten minutes of playing for me to adjust, and it never became truly intuitive.

Problems aside, playing an eight-person match of GoW with almost no lag was certainly a lot of fun. Favorite quote of the mini-LAN:
“Why don’t you stop running, Midnight?”
“Why don’t you stop dying, Mintz?”

Another interesting part of the mini-LAN was that one of the New-Schoolers’ TVs wasn’t running in hi-def. Phoenix’s 360 wasn’t set to display in 720p because he doesn’t have a hi-def TV at home. When it was connected to the 32″ Westy it continued to display in 480i, although it was possibly 480p–I can’t really remember. What I do remember was that the picture looked like crap compared to the exact same image (the GoW pregame lobby) on the TV beside it running at 720p. I pointed this out to the New Schoolers a couple times, most notably Myth, who replied, “Ahh, we’re good with it like this.” Not one to force people to do the right thing if it doesn’t affect me, I replied, “…OK.” To my knowledge, they played in standard definition the entire mini-LAN. I think it was worth the 90 seconds to reboot the dashboard and change the setting, but perhaps I’m a perfectionist.

(Oculus’s (Ocului’s???) sweet GoWish paint job on his 360)

Overall, the mini-LAN was a good time. It provided our first GoW LAN experience, educated us on some nuances of the 360 display settings, and showcased the difference of standard and high definition. I really enjoyed the competition of the New Schoolers. They are some battle-hardened COGs. I also enjoyed introducing Disavowed to GoW for the first time. Perhaps we hooked him. A GoW LAN with separate 360s and displays for each player would be awesome, albeit difficult to coordinate. However, I did notice that at high resolutions a 22″ monitor is more than adequate for a single player. Oculus regularly plays on a 24″ Dell 2407 running at 1080p, and we know how he pwns. I am unsure of the relative value of LANing Gears of War versus Xbox Live (XBL), but it’s fun for a change even if it’s not our staple mode of GoW multiplayer.

(They game. They saw. They got pwned.)

  • Et Tu, Brute – 720p, only 107 mb

    —

    by

    in
A couple of days ago, nitz stopped by our forum to say he’d re-encoded a 720p version of the Brute Vidoc; there are several already out there, but they’re huge, for the most part (multi-hundreds of megabytes). His version has been encoded with x264 (an open-source version of the h.264 codec), and it’s tiny, in comparison to its peers – 107 mb. It’s playable on all platforms using VLC (though on a Mac, at least, you’ll need something reasonably fast to actually SEE it) – nitz tells me it’s nicely playable on a 900 MHz Pentium 3, using the Windows version of VLC. If you haven’t seen this in hi-res because you didn’t want to download a 300 (or 600) mb file… grab this puppy; it has no watermarks (it was ripped from the marketplace version), and though nitz denigrates its quality in his forum post, I’d have to say it’s quite good.(Louis Wu 17:06:00 UTC)

XerxdeeJ stopped by to point out that TTL is back up and posting, after a holiday break – and the first article up is a discussion of ‘Allies’ – and what that means. When you play them, you’re not meeting mortal enemies – you’re meeting a group of folks that want to be your friends after they blow you away (or vice versa). And isn’t that the best kind of gaming?(Louis Wu 16:59:51 UTC)

  • Nintendo Wii Resposible for Death

    The Grim Wiiper Claims Life.

Although the Nintendo Wii has only been out a couple of months, it has managed to garner a tremendous amount of attention for the large number of injuries/accidents surrounding the console. The website Wii Have a Problem has taken it upon itself to document many of these accounts of property damage and bodily injury. Up to this point, however, most of these instances have been limited to bumps, scratches, black eyes, broken controllers – ya know, stuff you won’t care about in a matter of weeks/months. Unfortunately, one California woman recently fared much worse. While participating in a radio show contest to see how long one could “hold their wee”, while consuming water at regular intervals, she apparently gave herself water intoxication. She reported having a really bad headache, but did make it to her home where she was later found dead. She was trying to win the popular Nintendo gaming console for her 3 children.

  • The Brains Behind The Music

The cover article in the latest issue of The Escapist is about the composers behind today’s game music, and Marty O’Donnell (and the rest of the Bungie sound team) get a nice nod:

“I think one of the best examples is Marty O’Donnell and the team at Bungie,” says Ian Dorsch, who’s currently working on a game called Badge of Blood, by independent developer Warpig Studios. “The system they’ve developed for adaptive soundtracks is just jaw-dropping in its elegance and flexibility, and their work has really set the standard for the entire industry.”

  • For reference – info on the Halo 3 Legendary Edition

    —

    by

    in
It’s been more than 2 months since the various flavors of Halo 3 were made public – it’s been known since early November that $60 would buy you the bare game, $70 would buy you the ‘special’ edition (game plus bonus disc(s)), and $100 would snag you the Legendary edition – helmet and 4 discs, including the game. Paul Russell stopped by today to point out that Wal-Mart’s listing has all the info you need for that Legendary edition – nice photos of the helmet and case, plus details about the included discs. (They list it as ‘In Stock’, which is pretty silly – but then, it’s labeled as Wal-Mart No. 000000000, so as soon as it’s assigned a SKU, it’ll likely have a more realistic ship date. Maybe not a REAL ship date – we won’t know that until Bungie announces it – but more realistic than ‘now’.) This is worth posting so that there’s a place to point to when folks ask about what is included in the Legendary edition. Update: Frankie warns that these pictures are just the prototype; the real thing is ‘waaaaay better, more detailed and has much fancier textures.’ Okay, now I’m worried that I didn’t preorder…(Louis Wu 22:35:46 UTC)
