Sane Intolerant pointed out (obliquely) a comic he’d made in answer to a recent Halo, Articulated comic. Pretty funny, actually. And self-fulfilling, even.(Louis Wu 14:37:22 UTC)

  • Get gamerscore points on Live for Window titles including HALO 2 for Vista

After the public release of Windows Vista, Microsoft will soon start shipping PC games that are Live enabled. The XBOX Live service will then been known as just one part of a larger system (think XBOX, XBOX 360, PC, Windows Mobile devices like cellphones, and the Zune). PC games that are Live enabled will use a service called “Live for Windows” which will work a lot like XBOX Live. You’ll have one global “gamertag” on all systems. You can even add to your gamerscore by unlocking achievements on PC games. HALO 2 for Vista will be the first such game. From an article at Next Generation:

“A key feature of Live for Windows titles will be a unified Gamertag across all platforms and the introduction of the popular Xbox Live “Achievements” into Games for Windows titles. Achievements earned in both Xbox Live and Live for Windows titles will all count toward a player’s single Gamerscore. Microsoft’s Vista-reliant version of Halo 2 will be the first game to support Achievements on the Windows platform.”

This news comes from a meeting with Games for Windows executives in San Fransisco, yesterday. It is the first confirmation that I’ve seen that unlocking achievements on a PC game will contribute to your gamerscore.

Sidenote: I predict that Microsoft will soon increase the number of friends that we can have on our Live buddylists. For one, I think it’s almost needed now. Gears of War is a huge online success. I’ve got a nice chunk of my buddlylist that is dedicated to GoW users. Another part of my buddylist is hardcore HALO 2 players. Then I’ve got friends that play a variety of games that I also play on occasion. What if ANOTHER hit title was released that was Live aware? I would surely find a handful of new gamers to add to my buddylist. Yet, my buddylist is maxed out as it is. When HALO 2 for Vista launches I could easily add 40 gamers to my list.

  • Bad Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal

    Rifling Through Cameron's Stuff

The Escapist is calling Bungie a great artist in their piece on how the gaming industry shamelessly pillages the film industry, especially in the area of science fiction. The concept of the article: to make a list of movies so influential on the games industry that, if they had not ever existed, the gaming industry itself would be unrecognizable.

Halo, of course, warrants a mention:

While Halo quietly took some pieces from Iain M. Banks’ Culture novels, its more celluloid-inspired riffs were more obvious.

So obvious, of course, that the author doesn’t even bother to mention Aliens at that point, but it does make the list:

The movie’s Colonial Marines provide the backbone for everything from Halo to Command & Conquer’s view of the future. Where in even the dirtiest parts of the Star Wars universe are elements of romance, the Colonial Marines take their own visual cues from a post-Vietnam military with its array of firepower, gung-ho slogans and omnipresent wise-cracks. The Colonial Marine’s weaponry provides the backbone of most shooters.

Which is to say that, with the exception of the missing grenade launcher, Halo’s assault rifle is the automatic weapon wielded by Aliens’ colonial marines. The Pelican is Aliens’ dropship with a few altered contours, and Sarge is… well, Sarge. Not that we love him any less for it.

  • Russian Humorist Takes On Stubbs The Zombie

    set2 11 640x480

When we heard whispers to expect something “soon” from Wideload, I’m sure nobody had this in mind. Translator Dmitri “Goblin” Puchkov, responsible for many of the best quality dubs of Western movies and television programs into Russian, including some hilarious spoof dubs of films like Star Wars Episode One and Shmatrica, a parody of The Matrix, has turned his eyes to Stubbs the Zombie. In Goblin’s version, Stubbs the Zombie: Revenge of the King, the protagonist of the game is none other than Michael Jackson, who died of too many plastic surgeries and returns from the grave for revenge.

The Russian website Buka Entertainment (English version) has an entry for the game, which is scheduled for release on February 8, 2007. Below is a translation:

    Goblin studio presents:
Brought to death by his endless plastic surgeries and silicone injections into his brain, Michael Jackson has been raised from the dead to revenge himself on money-grubbing plastic surgeons, and in particularly, an ex-citizen of Russia that is the leading silicone oligarch. In pursuit of this goal he wreaks havoc, rips off arms and hands, eats brains and attacks the clinic. The American people all unite to protect silicon boobs and the other achievements of democracy! Military, police and even militia are standing in furious Michael’s way; but nothing can stop the wrathful king of pop! All the guilty will be devoured to death, and the innocent will be punished cruelly!

    Project details:

    • Get under a zombie’s skin! The original name of the game is Stubbs the Zombie. Now the funny translation by Goblin has truly brought new life to it.
    • Bloody vengeance takes place amidst astonishingly original surroundings.
    • A rare opportunity to fight for the dead in the epic battle against life and its vivid embodiment: silicon boobs.
    • Original fighting system. Believe us: you will have all kinds of opportunities for revenge.

Many of Goblin’s works reside in a legal grey area, and limited access to and knowledge of the Russian legal system makes it difficult, if not impossible, for foreign intellectual property owners to enforce their rights there. It is not known whether this version is sanctioned by Wideload or Aspyr.

However, Goblin and his parodies are also very popular, and if this one takes off, Wideload’s maiden effort might achieve something no Bungie title has so far: gain notoriety in the former Soviet Union. While the region is awash with pirated PC games, Macintosh computers are rare and Xbox consoles are virtually non-existent, as Microsoft chose never to launch it or the Xbox Live service there, despite the phenomenal growth of the economy, due to questions about piracy. While the Halo franchise might be big in the US and Europe, in Russia it’s virtually unknown, whereas PC games like Counter-Strike and the Half-Life series are well-known and available in localized versions, whether official or unofficial.

Goblin’s own website has additional information on his other projects. However unknown Halo might be, it does seem as if Bungie’s earlier PC and PlayStation offering, Oni, is not unknown. Oni’s protagonist, Konoko, has been adopted for promotional purposes by the Russian gaming site OGL.

Kudos to my wife, a fan of Goblin’s translations, for finding (and translating) this item.

UPDATE: Since the machinations of the industry that produce localized versions of games for publication in far-off lands are many, varied, and complex, sometimes things happen that even surprise those who originally made a game.

So it is perhaps not surprising that Wideload itself isn’t sure if this is the real deal or not. Apparently a Russian translation has been mentioned by publisher Aspyr, but Matt Soell of Wideload reckons that Goblin’s “Return of the King” version of Stubbs is unofficial.

  • Send stuff in for the Halo 3 beta show!

Episode 97 has been recorded and will be released shortly. Unfortunately we can’t have an MLG update segment this time as we’re assembling a new team for that. But we’ll let you know what Halo fans think of Viva Pinata. But on to more important stuff…

What do you think will be in the Halo 3 beta?

Do you think it will have new vehicles, maps, game modes or weapons we haven’t heard of? Do you think they’ll hold back on any of the more complex features they’ve mentioned? How many maps do you think there will be? Do you think there will be any limitations such as no party system or matchmaking only? What level are you most excited to play? Do you think this will succeed in the areas where Halo 2 didn’t? Do you think Halo 3 will live up to the hype?

Alpha, Friends and Family, Rule of threes or Crackdown?

Do you think you’ll make it into phase one? If not, do you plan on buying Crackdown? Or would you rather do the rule of threes thing and play 3 hours of Halo 3 in early February and then re-register? How would you rate how Microsoft/Bungie has handled the beta so far?

Aah Foo Mo stop with the questions my brain hurts!

Ok fine, but answer a few, will ya? Just click submit news and tips on the right and send in your thoughts with your gamertag. If it’s good, we’ll put it on the podcast! We’re actually recording Wednesday night this week, which is earlier than usual, so get your comments in fast! I hope you’re as excited as we are to find out what happens with the beta. Let’s talk about it!

  • GIA Halo 3 Weapon/Vehicle Design Contest Results

You may have seen the news story a few weeks back about this contest over at Games in Action. Well, the competition closed recently and the results of the winners have just been released. You can check out all of the art work by going to this post.

  • Agony

The wheels have started turning. The floodgates are cracked open. A few lucky souls have received their confirmation that they will be a part of phase one of the Halo 3 public beta. As random people receive bundles of joy in their inboxes, the hardcore among the Halo community feverishly refresh their inboxes and listen to the hollow tick, tick, tick of the clock. By the end of tomorrow we will know. Tomorrow. Feels like a lifetime when joe schmo already got his invite and we’re prepping for our 98th podcast about the Halo universe. Must be patient. Must remember not to hold my breath. Have faith in Bungie, they’ve been good to us… Ah! Must go refresh my inbox again!

Lots and lots and lots of people are hearing from Microsoft about the Halo 3 beta – here’s one big thread on our forum about it. (We’ve also gotten lots of email from people who got in.) If you haven’t received anything – don’t fret yet, they’ve said word would be coming all this week. (And for folks who are angry to hear that others have gotten in… I think you might need to work on some envy issues.) For what it’s worth – this is NOT the last chance you’ll have for getting into the Beta… it’s simply a big one.(Louis Wu 16:36:51 UTC)

  • RT: The importance of Prenups

Looks like it’s going to snow in Austin tonight. They say there could be as many as 3 inches. Now I’m no expert, but I think that qualifies as a blizzard? Someone from the north will have to confirm that for me. Anyway, today’s comic is below, and shows…

  • RT: Heartstrings

Just in case you missed it, Episode 88 is here. Also, today’s comic is posted below. It’s about Jason. I know what you’re thinking, “There’s nothing interesting about Jason.” Typically I’d agree, but in light of this comic, you may change your…

  • RT: I’ll take the rapist for 600

It’s Saturday, so you know what that means, time for another comic that exposes Gus for the loveable dickhead he is. Asshole

  • RT: Sick Month

I don’t know if you have ever heard of this game called World Of Warcraft, but apparently it’s kind of popular. It’s also the reason Gus gets out of bed every morning. Apparently in WOW (for the first time in his life), Gus gets to be the bully. Every morning…

Over at Bungie.net, the new Top Story is a Fan Art update – and man, is there some amazing stuff in this one. Over at High Impact Halo, Ducain pointed out a new Halo 1 tricking tribute vid, done by some of the pioneers… there’s stuff in there I’ve seen before, and stuff I’ve NEVER seen. This game is more than 5 years old now – it’s beautiful to see people still pulling new tricks. Available in a variety of sizes.(Louis Wu 16:09:35 UTC)

  • The Assault

    —

    by

    in
trigger119 sent word of a new machinima he’s hosting over at GamingTV.org. It’s called The Assault, and he found it because Laird (of SvF and Halo: Unyielding) did some 3D work for it. The voice acting could use some work… and so could the choreography. But the added touches (a communication screen, a Pelican, etc) are really nicely done. The downloadable versions at GTV are about 30 mb, depending on flavor, or you can watch it at YouTube.(Louis Wu 15:35:45 UTC)

  • Making Fun Games

GamesIndustry.biz sat down with Max Hoberman, of Certain Affinity (and recently of Bungie), to discuss his new venture, and how he got to where he is. Bunch of Bungie trivia in there, and some good Halo stuff. Max has positive things to say about Halo 3’s multiplayer – “It’s years ahead of everything that’s out there.” Go read the rest of the article. I found this via Eurogamer, but it looks like GhaleonEB posted a link while I was still snug in my bed.(Louis Wu 15:17:08 UTC)

Mister Froggy sent word that Halo, Articulated #7 is now live – it’s a Gears of War crossover joke (one I didn’t get, but one that’s supposedly funny if you play GoW). Check it out!(Louis Wu 14:49:12 UTC)
