The latest news about the Halo series of games from Microsoft

  • Economics of the Stupid

There’s a great op-ed piece over at the Escapist – how do you rationalize the payment for a Halo 3 preorder when your common sense tells you that money is better off in your pocket? Heh – I know exactly where he’s coming from. Really enjoyable read.(Louis Wu 10:59:36 UTC)

  • Halo Games Popular This Week

According to Gamasutra, all three Halo games are on Gamefly’s Most Requested lists this week – Halo 3 is number one on the Xbox 360 list, and Halo 2 and Halo took spots one and three, respectively, on the Xbox list. You think folks might be interested in the series? (Louis Wu 10:29:21 UTC)

  • Hello, Halo

There are dozens of newspapers doing quick summaries of the Halo universe in preparation for next week’s release – I found this one, in the Hartford Courant, to be slightly more interesting than the rest because of some lesser-known tidbits. Did you know that Steve Downes, the voice of Master Chief, was denounced online for being a “boring noob”? (I didn’t.) How about that The New York Times compared Red vs Blue to ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead’? (I must have missed that.) Anyway, nice background.(Louis Wu 10:25:10 UTC)

  • Halo 3 How-To: Forge Basics

Also on Bungie.net today – a Halo 3 How-To giving you some Forge Basics. It’s just the first of three Forge pieces coming from Bungie – this one will teach you how to get started and do some simple things. Check it out!(Louis Wu 10:14:09 UTC)

  • Blue Filter Tool – Coming Soon

There’s a note up on Bungie.net about the blue filter that can be used in conjunction with the Audio/Video Calibration tool that comes on the Essentials disc distributed with the Limited and Legendary editions of Halo 3. The filter is not NECESSARY – but it can be helpful. It’s not available yet, but when it is, they’ll update you about to get one.(Louis Wu 10:11:12 UTC)

  • Warming Up The Forge

Tyson “Ferrex” Green has written up the first part of a three-part series on working in Forge, Halo 3’s in-game editor. You’ll apparently be able to call on a startling variety of objects in the editor; although you won’t be able to change map geometry, you’ll be able to add objects so large that they will, effectively, change the flow of the map.

And, of course, it’s not just editing, it’s also a play mode:

Unlike that most famous of Monitors, 343 Guilty Spark, you’re still vulnerable to damage, but it takes a steady shot to hit a moving Monitor. Evasive maneuvers will serve you as well as a gun, but there’s a bit more to Editor Mode than simply dodging bullets. You see, Editor Mode is where the magic happens.

Check out the first part and be sure to watch for the rest coming soon!

Thanks for the heads-up to JawReich in #hbo.

  • News Summary For September 17

Russ Pitts at the escapist has never preordered a game— until Halo 3, that is.

Gamesindustry.biz reports that Microsoft is expecting to sell out of the Legendary edition of Halo 3, in the US at least.

According to CVG, the Legendary edition has already sold out in the UK.

Frank Caron from Ars Technica had a chance to play through the game and will have a thorough writeup after the 23rd when the embargo ends.

Char Easter was invited to play Halo 3 at Bungie and wrote up his experience.

GamerMetrics says Halo 3’s launch means fewer sales of other titles. Fancy that.

Bungie says that a blue filter will be very helpful for those keen to get the most out of the Audio/Video calibration tool they’re providing with the Legendary Edition. They’ll be available in the Bungie store soon.

  • The Ending Of Halo 3

First of all, this page contains SPOILERS. Do NOT read it unless you want the ending of Halo 3 spoiled for you. This is not appearing on the front page unless you’ve selected to view spoilers, and I’ve obscured the text by making it white on a white background; you’ll have to highlight it to read. That’s as much protection as I can give you.

As far as I can determine, this is the legitimate and true summary of Halo 3’s plot; but I’ll admit, I have not read it in its entirety myself, so if it’s wrong, blame the author. It was posted by imKryptonite on the the360Forum.com; for what it’s worth, he liked the game and felt it made up for Halo 2’s shortcomings.

    Here’s an excerpt:

So, we start off with Cortana telling us why she picked John 117, and what he had that no one but her saw: Luck. We then witness our dear Spartan crashlanding into a jungle. Sergeant Major what’s-his-name (the cool black dude everyone’s so fond of) and his squad pick John up and bring him back to normal, at which point he also gets to see the Arbiter again, and find out that “they’re with us now”. You then fight yourself back to base, where Master Chief barely gets briefed before the whole place is overrun by Covenant forces. You get to shoot some guns and throw some ‘nades and before you know it you’ve armed a bomb that’s gonna blow the whole place to smithereens. Enter: Level 3, where you’re going hog wild with the Warthog, racing down highways, beating stuff up, et cetera. You do a bunch of semi-important “oh and btw uhh new objective” stuff such as taking down an Anti Air cannon, while the Covenant is still digging happily into whatever the hell it is that’s buried deep under Africa.

And then they light it. Now, the general theory is that, duh, that’s The Ark, and it’s here on Earth, and goddamn did the Prophet of Truth just fire all the goddamn rings in the entire universe from The Ark? But fuck us, we were all wrong. Turns out that wasn’t really The Ark after all! Instead, it lighted up the sky, and brought upon us a motherfuckin black hole teleport portal, which some Covenant ships dive into to figure out just what the fuck is going on. However, there’s a ship coming out of the portal as well …

If you really want the rest, check out the forum thread.

  • Halo 3 How-to: Forge Basics

How does the Forge actually work? Tyson Green, Halo 3’s Multiplayer Lead just begins to explain.

  • Fanswag: The Halo 3 Version

Xbox 360 Fanboy is giving away a pretty amazing package – 50″ HDTV, surround sound system, Xox 360 Elite – in honor of Halo 3’s release. (No copy of Halo 3, though, oddly enough.) Go read the full details at their site – you’ve got up to 11 chances to win!(Louis Wu 01:02:43 UTC)

  • Blue Filters Still En Route to Bungie Store

The Blue Filter, which is certainly not required for an enjoyable Halo 3 experience but can be used to fine tune your television’s color settings isn’t available at the Bungie Store, yet.

  • Alert! Ending for Halo 3 has been leaked. Videos, articles surface.

Fair warning. The ending to Halo 3 has been leaked to the internet. Within a few button presses and clicks of the mouse, you can be watching the end to the trilogy. I for one can say that I was surprised that Master Chief was killed by Cortana and that she is going to have his love child. You?

    What?

That’s an example of how easy it will be to have Halo 3 spoiled for you if you surf the internet any time between now and you finishing the campaign. Expect the ending of Halo 3 to also be written on any kind of community driven website (Facebook, MySpace, DIGG, internet forums, blogs, etc.). So beware. The ending of Halo 3 is online. You can’t stop it. You can only hope to contain it.

Note #1: Try to have the Halo 3 campaign completed by our massive Halo 3 LAN on October 6th. It is going to be terribly hard to contain ourselves. I’ll let Midnight address this later. Will talking about the H3 ending be banned? I doubt it, although the community will in large decide this one. But recall, one reason to have the LAN on October 6th was so that everyone could work through the campaign. Finish the fight people!

Note #2: You can only discuss spoiler information on this website if:

    1) You place a warning at the beginning of your message and replies.
    2) Your post is dated after Sept 25th.

    Protect your friends. Protect yourself.

  • Midnight Madness (a representative example)

We’re not going to list every US store that’s hosting a midnight sale (there are 10,000 of them; we don’t have the front-page space), but we got word that Micro Center in Hilliard, OH is hosting a costume party, and top prize wins a Legendary Edition of Halo 3. (I’m POSITIVE this is happening elsewhere – but you’ll need to check with your local stores to find out if something cool is happening in your area – as I said, we just don’t have the room.)(Louis Wu 21:35:16 UTC)

  • Machinima Europe Nominations

Hugh Hancock let us know that the nominations for Machinima Europe can be seen at the Promoting Machinima website; congratulations to Laird, whose Halo Unyielding Parts 1 and 2 have been nominated for ‘Best Technical Achievement’!(Louis Wu 21:23:03 UTC)

  • Wallpaper pack at Gamespot

Gamespot has made a Wallpaper Pack out of some of the images from the Believe campaign – 11 images at 1600×1200 resolution. Nice work – and it’s free (regisration required). Thanks, serpx.(Louis Wu 20:20:24 UTC)

  • Halo 3 Legendary – Going, Going, Gone?

According to GamesIndustry.biz, a Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed that the Halo 3 Legendary Edition is on track to sell out in the US before Halo 3’s launch next week. (There are many reports that it’s already sold out in the UK, although Milk, in IRC, told me today that Play just reopened their preorders, so it’s unclear if that’s entirely true.)(Louis Wu 19:28:59 UTC)

  • Sellin’ It

SquirrelOnFire lets us know that today’s Sore Thumbs is Halo-related – comics might be all you have left, go read.(Louis Wu 19:15:16 UTC)

  • Yep, it’s out there.

I’m posting this because I need to stem the flood of emails rolling in – but yes, the ending to Halo 3 has been leaked. If you’re trying to avoid spoilers – my suggestion is to get off the internet for a week.(Louis Wu 18:10:33 UTC)

  • Plastic Explosives.

Stuntmutt takes a look at the Diorama from last week’s Believe ads in today’s One One Se7en. Come see me after class – I’ll lend you a whiffle bat for beating him about the head and ears.(Louis Wu 17:58:35 UTC)
