The latest news about the Halo series of games from Microsoft

  • Warhawk Trophies this month

It seems that when Warhawk, one of the first cool PS3 games, gets patched later this month, trophies will be added. The Warhawk 1.5 patch hits August 27th and will add over 50 trophies to include in your achievement fix.

I haven’t actually played Warhawk yet, but this may be the perfect time to go digging through the discount bin to find a PS3 title. What do you think? What games would you like to see get trophies retroactively?

  • Geometry Wars 2 – Smile Walkthrough

Last week’s ever delicious Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2 is an excellent XBLA title, and you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t at least play the demo (which enters you into a contest with Microsoft to win 100,000 Microsoft points, so long as you play it before tomorrow).

We featured it on Achievement Hunter TV last week and Geoff and Jack had a lot of fun playing it, whilst I was in the background competing for high scores and racing against Jack’s Achievements during the broadcast. That night Jack and I both finished with 10 of the 12 Achievements under our belt, leaving Game Over and Smile, both of which involve the Sequence gametype.

So, today’s video shows you how to do Smile, which I unlocked (and fortunately for you, captured) yesterday. Smile is simply described as “2, 4, 11, 15, 17, 18, and 19.” Time out on stages 2 and 4, and die on the others. Oh, and don’t die or time out on the stages not listed, obviously. This video is sort of a two-fer, in that if you do this, and don’t have Game Over, you can get that at the same time. Also, my method leaves you with an extra life, so you can mess up on one level and still get Game Over upon completion. Enjoy, and don’t forget to breath.

Today’s video brings us one step closer to finding and slaughtering the 200 pigeons around Liberty City. Now we’re onto the second half of the first island, and take out the 28 pigeons in Dukes. That brings us to 50 in total. We should have this town cleaned up in no time. Anyway, enjoy, and here is the coinciding map with numbered pigeon locations.

  • In-Depth Look at Halo AI

If you didn’t get enough of Damian Isla in the GamesIndustry interview we just told you about, swing by Gamasutra this morning – they have a writeup of a keynote Isla gave at the recent Develop conference. (We mentioned this talk back in June.) It’s a pretty interesting look at how the AI in the Halo games has been built to make sure the game remains fun for players. If you’re interested in how the people behind the scenes make the decisions that affect how you interact with the characters in Halo, you should read this.(Louis Wu 14:45:17 UTC)

  • Damian Isla talks to GamesIndustry.biz

GamesIndustry.biz posted an interview with Bungie’s Damian Isla – it’s a really interesting piece. Isla holds forth on Bungie’s post-independence enthusiasm, on the state of first-person shooters today, on the differences in design philosophy between games like Halo, CoD4, and Bioshock. There are subtle hints that Bungie might be working on a game that has more in common with Myth than Halo – or might have plans to do so in the future. There’s a confirmation that at the moment, they’re still a 360 studio. There’s a look at how Halo AI has evolved over the years. And more! Go read it. Both GI and Eurogamer pulled the same ‘takeaway message’ from the interview – a comment Isla made that Bungie could learn from the way CoD4 kept players interested over time – but there’s much, much more to the interview than that.
