The Best-Laid Plans
An overview of the fictional events witnessed in the Halo 3 ODST E3 ’09 trailers…
It’s hard to believe that a full year has come and gone since last year’s E3 conference; but it has indeed been an entire year. It’s also hard to believe that during this span of time we’ve seen no in-game footage of the new title – not a single still frame or screenshot, besides concept art and carefully extracted character models. Thankfully, though, dawn has broken and in the blink of an eye we’ve been enveloped by ODST videos, screenshots, 3D renders, “field guides,” and much more.
Facing this sensory overload, we can only do our best to try and fit together the puzzle pieces that Bungie has handed us. For now, let’s put aside some interesting, but ultimately minor, points – such as a larger grenade count and flyable Banshees – and take a look at some important questions: What sort of situation has the Rookie found himself in on the ground? Where are his fellow team members? Where is his commanding officer? And – perhaps most importantly of all – why is he even here in Mombasa?
While most of these questions cannot be answered until we take control of the Trooper ourselves, I think we can all agree that Bungie has given us enough evidence today to allow us to start forming some solid ideas on what ODST has in store for us – and just maybe they’ve answered a mystery or two, as well.
So let’s take everything that’s been revealed so far and put it all together…

Loads of pics up on the THX Facebook page
I uncovered a ton of old pics and uploaded them to the THX Facebook page. If you are reading this, you were probably tagged multiple times and you are part of the resistance. Have a look if you aren’t too nervous.

Monetizing the Rookie
Exanubisleader pointed out a couple of articles at Kotaku. The first covers new avatars that will be available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace in the future – one of them is a Halo 3: ODST character. The second shows off the first look at the Xbox 360 controller that will be bundled with Halo 3: ODST in its Limited Edition packaging this fall. Willy pointed out yet another article, also at Kotaku, which explains the $59.99 pricetag of ODST – and the $99.99 pricetag of the LE. (Louis Wu 03:49:58 UTC)

Great work from the time of Halo 3’s release
Gonna get some news on the page for Tuesday, because I’ll be travelling for most of Tuesday morning, and taking in the E3 sights during the afternoon. First up: nearly buried in the wild discussing this afternoon, Mrguy pointed out a pretty slick digital image created by Mike Thompson. Old… but gaw-juss! (Louis Wu 03:48:40 UTC)

Halo 3 Partnership Notes: Part II: Voice Communication
Anyone interested in my voice communication notes will find them attached below (Comm I.pdf). Anyone who wishes to send me comments or suggestions, please post them below. vector40, I’m not sure if you got my email or not. If you didn’t, I apologize. Until about five minutes ago, I was using rancher81@hotmail.com, which was having serious problems sending email.
I’m also afraid that I’m abandoning my–project(?), as no one that I knew well enough to work with was interested enough to actually help me out. Frankly, to tell the truth, I don’t think I would have enjoyed the partnership once, as my bungie.net service record will prove. My gaming is purely recreational.
Speaking of my service record, don’t look at anything except the past two or three games as being my playing. My little sister, much to my annoyance, was playing on my account. I haven’t looked yet to see exactly how many games she played, but it couldn’t have been many, as my XP didn’t go down very much that I can tell.
Well, I seem to have strayed a bit. Anyhow, I intend to continue posting and revising my notes, but actually applying them to Halo is going to be up to anyone interested enough to actually put any of this into practice.
A NOTE ON SETTING UP A PRIVATE CHAT
If you go into the XBOX Guide, you should find an option for “CHAT” or something similar. Selecting it will present a variety of chat options. Select one of the private chat channels, select the friend that you want to talk to, and wait for them to accept the chat invite. If you want, you can include a text and/or voice message in the invite.
