Game Content Usage Rules from MS
Laird noticed that over at Xbox.com, Microsoft has posted their Game Content Usage Rules, spelling out what their game content can, and cannot, be used for. For the most part, it’s great news; there’s now an official policy in place stating what you need to do in order to legally use footage from, say, Halo in a fan creation – no more worrying that you’re skirting the law, or that the MS legal team will come down on you like a ton of Brutes. However, some of the rules might give Halo machinima makers pause; there are, for example, rules like this:You can’t add to the game universe or expand on the story told in the game with “lost chapters” or back story or anything like that.
As I think back about some of the best machinima I’ve seen, an awful lot of it ‘adds to the game universe’ – does this new policy mean that these projects will have to be taken down?(Louis Wu 13:33:48 UTC)

Jonathan Ross – a bad guy?
Anton P. Nym found some interesting information about a potential voice actor for Halo 3 – this page contains info about Jonathan Ross agreeing to voice one “of the most evil aliens in the new game” for free (due to an exclusive contract he has with the BBC). We have no confirmation on this story, so for now it needs to be labeled rumor – but it has the ring of truth to it.(Louis Wu 13:27:05 UTC)

Halo 3 Achievements – 9 Images Changed
Monster 2 of 2 let us know that the Achievement list for Halo 3 has been updated again – in his words, “the 3 campaign completion achievements (10-12), the rank achievements (22-24), and the kill achievements (27, 28, 31) now sport new graphics.” You can check them out either at the Achieve360Points.com website, or at Xbox.com.(Louis Wu 13:21:45 UTC)

Microsoft Allows MMO Developers To Require Hard Drive
Two and a half years ago, I said that rumors that the Xbox 360 would not have a hard drive as standard were evidence that either the speculators, or someone at Microsoft, were on crack.
I thought it was silly for Microsoft to become the first company to make a hard drive standard in a console instead of an option, only to become the first company to remove the same feature.
I thought it was silly to tease developers into depending on the hard drive, and then take that away.
I thought it was silly to divide the Xbox market into hard drive haves and hard drive have nots, because eventually, no matter how strenuously Microsoft asserted the opposite, it seemed inevitable to me that some Xbox 360 games would come to require the hard drive, and that eventually most would.
Some of that came to be almost immediately: the much-touted backwards compatibility feature of the Xbox 360 requires a hard drive, not only because many of the games that feature emulates depended on it (like Halo and Halo 2) but because the emulators themselves need to be downloaded and stored somewhere, although they are conceivably small enough to fit on a memory card.
Final Fantasy XI was the first 360 game to require a hard drive, and Next Generation now says that MMO developers will be allowed to require the hard drive as long as they display the requirement on the front of the box.
The other shoe has just dropped.
Hey, Microsoft– while you’re allocating that $1B charge for ring of death warranty repairs, why not give every Core owner a free hard drive? You might as well.

Free Bioshock Artbook Available for Download

Bioshock: Breaking the Mold is the title, and because the limited edition of the game couldn’t ship with a book of concept art as the developers initially wanted, it’s now being offered for download in PDF format in both standard and high resolution versions. Gamers interested in the plot may want to skip the foreward by Ken Levine as it contains spoilers.
Get your copy of the art book here.

2160 AD Trailer
ODST Epsilon stopped by our forum recently to point out a trailer for a new machinima series, ‘2160 AD’. It focuses on a section of Halo canon that’s only been mentioned a little bit – they’re trying to stay true to the info that’s out there, while still making an entertaining movie. The trailer suggests they’ve got an interesting project on their hands. If you’d rather watch it on YouTube than via the download link he put in to his post, you can do that.(Louis Wu 06:24:11 UTC)

BBFC rates the Legendary Bonus Disc
deftangel sent us word that the Legendary disc for Halo 3 has been rated by the BBFC – it received a ’12’ rating. This is the bonus disc content – NOT the game. Unless the game comes in with a ’12’ rating, the overall package will contain the game’s rating, not the bonus disc rating. (The huge running time is because the audio commentary track is measured separately.)(Louis Wu 06:16:36 UTC)

Freeverse Developer Posts Marathon Walkthrough
Bruce “Hippieman” Morrison at Freeverse, the developer that brought Bungie’s Marathon: Durandal to Xbox Live Arcade, has been working on a walkthrough of the game. While of course there is always the Marathon Spoiler Guide, which covers all three games, Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal and Marathon: Infinity, Hippieman’s walkthrough includes screenshots of environments, whereas the Spoiler Guide features only maps.
Currently Hippieman’s walkthrough is a work in progress; you can download the latest version to see how far he’s gotten; he announced the file in this thread in the Xbox forums.
For those who need a different kind of help with the game– the kind needed to wring all 200 gamerscore points out of it– Xyjar posted a Marathon: Durandal Achievement Guide.
