Taking Leaks Seriously
Wow. Not really sure how to explain this one succinctly. Start at The Hushed Casket, I guess (thanks, Rampancy.net), to learn how a bunch of people got unauthorized access to the Halo 3 Epsilon. Then swing by homicidal insomniac to see the followup – Microsoft banned both the gamertags, AND the Console IDs, of those involved. (Permanent bans on both, invalidating both a $50/year Gamertag and a multi-hundred-dollar console, at least for Live use.) THEN, follow the Xboxic forum thread link in that last article to hear from one of the guys involved – and realize that he’s one of those people who buys busted (RROD) consoles, fixes ’em, and resells ’em… but he plays on ’em, first. So know that if you buy a used console, you might just find that it’s been permabanned from Live. Oh, so many lessons in one little story!(Louis Wu 19:59:04 UTC)

VGL Announces Greatest Hits Volume One
Interesting. Video Games Live has announced that they’ll be releasing an album in October. (Are they still called ‘albums’?) It will include medleys from all the games they play live in concert – including Halo. Candland: Bungie Is Not A One-Trick Pony
Video Gaming Refugees Blog Confessionals has a two part interview with Bungie’s interface guru, Dave “Evil Otto” Candland. It covers a wide range of topics, but perhaps of most interest to fans now that Halo 3 is almost in our hands is– what will Bungie do next?
Evil Otto: Well, who knows? I’d love to push out an Xbox Live arcade title just for a change of pace but that’s really not up to me. Whatever the case, I just hope that 10 years from now I’m not working on Halo: the next generation part 5. People won’t pay for a dead horse, especially one that continues to be beaten. Bungie isn’t a one-trick pony. We’ve done RTS games that have received multiple game of the year awards, the Marathon series was extremely successful – it’s still considered by many to be the greatest Mac game ever. Halo 3 may not necessarily be the last Halo related game Bungie ever makes, but we are certainly thinking hard about what our next “big thing” will be.

Over at Video Gaming Refugees, Yaters has posted an interview with Dave “Evil Otto” Candland, Bungie’s Interface Designer. It’s in two parts (Part One | Part Two) due to the characters-per-post limit on their forum. It’s a pretty interesting read – fascinating tidbits about design issues that did (and didn’t) work out, ways that Bungie had to account for changes in XBL, and more. IGN Walks You Through Marathon: Durandal
