The latest news about the Halo series of games from Microsoft

  • Ars looks at Reach

Ars Technica has posted an article entitled ‘Deconstructing Reach: our time with the beta‘ – and you can pretty much guess the topic from the title. Things they liked, things they didn’t like – go see if you agree! (Louis Wu 14:00:06 UTC)

  • Brute Minor

Not slowing down – Tony ‘ubald’ Marcotte has a new render up for you; this one was inspired by the ODST live trailer, and shows off a pretty frightening Brute. Check it!(Louis Wu 13:53:11 UTC)

  • Beta codes from PGCR

SK1LL4XED sent word that Postgame Carnage Report has a pair of Beta codes up for grabs – just jump over to their forum and post a short story about Halo – your favorite moment in campaign or multiplayer, your first Halo experience… swing by and see what’s up. (You’ll have to register to get in.) (Louis Wu 13:47:06 UTC)

  • Edge – Reach Preview and More

kapowaz let us know about some Halo content in the next issue of Edge – looks sweet!(Louis Wu 13:40:14 UTC)

  • Leave Out All the Rest

AssaultGodzilla is back with another music video – this one contains clips from an amazing variety of sources, and paints an emo picture of Spartan culture. Timing, as always, is quite nice. (Louis Wu 13:39:56 UTC)

  • Largest Halo Comic Book Project Ever

Frankie stopped by our forum last night with heartening words for folks looking forward to the next Halo comic project – check it out! (Louis Wu 13:39:23 UTC)

  • Cr1TiKal Plays Reach

A few folks have pointed out videos from Cr1TiKal – he makes a lot of MW2 vids, but he’s got some Reach vids that are worth watching, too. They’re funny (though not particularly safe for work, if your boss doesn’t like hearing swearing coming out of your speakers) – check out Halo Reach Fun Tactics – Launch, to learn some cool techniques with the ‘Pro Pipe’ (otherwise known as the Grenade Launcher), and laugh at the hilarious descriptions of the action in his Halo Reach Invasion Gameplay and Commentary. There are others, too – check his playlist. Good times. (Louis Wu 13:38:36 UTC)

  • Panoramifying Reach

BlueNinja whipped up some panoramas he calls ‘Before the Fall‘ – go see ’em on his ‘Views from the Edge’ blog. (Trendt jumped in with a cool cleaned-up image of Boneyard’s background – then made it available in a 1920×1080 size for folks who want to use it as a background image.) Update: BlueNinja has added a set of Panoramas from outside Boneyard, entitled ‘Bones and Glass‘ – gorgeous! (Louis Wu 13:38:13 UTC)

  • None Of The Above

RVideo pointed out a Reach Beta Jumptage called ‘None of the Above‘ – it shows off some pretty cool jumps that you can do in Matchmaking, with some practice. Some seem just for show, others have serious tactical value. (Louis Wu 13:36:45 UTC)

  • Polishing is Important

Reach’s Developer Log was updated on Saturday – the crew was working hard, even though the weather outside was gorgeous. The sacrifices they make for us… we love you, guys!(Louis Wu 13:35:43 UTC)

  • The other side of Invasion

Busy weekend – both in the Halo universe and outside it. Following is a scattershot of what might have been missed. (It is by no means everything that’s out there – just a taste if you want to go hunting.) Lots of people noticed odd glitches with the Invasion mode of Reach – Bungie’s already said that come Fall, Invasion games will be two-sided; you’ll play first as either Spartans or Elites, but then switch and play the other side. Apparently, the beta can glitch into this mode relatively easily. Example is here (thanks, rolandk73). Folks have also seen Armor-Locked Elites – thanks, Dani. There are plenty of other glitches that have been seen (and documented) – browse our forum (among other places) for details! Should be a fun Fall!(Louis Wu 13:34:43 UTC)

  • UPDATE: Steam for OS X is out

UPDATE: Steam for OS X is out. You can get it here. To celebrate the release, Valve has released Portal as a free download. Go Valve!

    Sources: Gizmodo | Ars Technica

I know most of you guys are PC gamers, but for myself in particular this is huge news. Valve is releasing Steam for OS X May 12th, and they’re bringing their extensive library of games with them. They’ve done much more than just bringing old content to the Mac, however.

Valve has also announced they intend to make the Mac a “tier-1” platform with simultaneous releases of new games on PC, Mac, and Xbox 360. In other words, the Mac will no longer be left in the dust with new Valve games. They also developed a Mac native version of their Source engine rather than trying to emulate it.

Something awesome for everyone is coming too: syncing up all your game progress, free of charge. Meaning, any fragging you do on one machine, be it a Mac, PC, or Xbox, they will all sync up reflecting your most recent gaming efforts.

Cross-platform play is in the works, so that Mac gamers such as myself will now be able to play with those on the PC and Xbox 360.

Oh, yeah, and playing games on either platform won’t cost anything extra. Meaning, buying a Valve game on your PC does NOT mean you are paying for it twice just so you can load up a game on OS X. As usual, Valve shows their incredible forward thinking as well as leading the pack in good customer service. How many other game companies are doing this sort of thing? Exactly why I love Valve so much.

The first simultaneous game launch on OS X, PC, and Xbox 360 will be Portal 2. This does not bode well for my productivity, with Steam launching May 12th.

Be sure to take a break today from the Reach Beta (or from discussing the Reach Beta on your favorite message board) to wish your mom a Happy Mother’s Day!

  • AH: Halo Reach: Denied

I think the image to this video says it all…

  • AH: Skate 3 Preview Number 3!

Yo guys, today I present to you our last Skate 3 preview (the game comes out next week).

EA brought me up to Vancouver to check out their sick-ass studio and get a final look at Skate 3 before launch. Check out the video below.

Oh, and I also can announce the winners of the Skate 3 Achievement Hunter graphic contest. Coming in first was CatEyesJimmy with this awesome entry. Congrats on being awesome.

We also really dug NextMemory’s entry you can see here. We went ahead and gave him a free XBLA game too.

Last but not least was WigglyJoe’s entry which Geoff and I really dug. Something about mustaches makes everything better.

    Thanks guys, you all rule!!
