Podtacular 467: Halo Online Announced

March 31st, 2015

When you talk Halo on the PC, you have to go back about 10 years to find Halo 2 Vista still kicking around.  Recent news changes the whole game once again as Halo Online was announced for PC coming to a closed beta in Russia.  There’s no word on whether this will be coming to other regions of the world, but it’s exciting to hear that the PC community, although currently limited, is able to enjoy this franchise once again.  Halo Online is free to play game based off a heavily modified Halo 3 engine with micro-transactions built in.  From the announcement trailer, we got to see some familiar maps and lots of customization for your Spartan armor and weapons.  Now if we can just get MCC to PC, that would be even better.

ASE Ep. 148 Marathon Tempus Irae 03-04: Like A Well Filled Day / Repository Two

March 28th, 2015
Like A Well Filled Day

We're starting a new Marathon adventure-- this time fighting the Pfhor in Italy of the past in third party scenario Tempus Irae!

In this episode we find ourselves inside a castle made to resemble a water pump and read about Leonardo Da Vinci's nightmares. We also shoot aliens.

Tempus Irae can be played, like the other Marathon games, using the open source Aleph One engine which you can get here for Windows, Mac and Linux:

Tempus Irae and other third party scenarios for the Aleph One engine can be downloaded here:

We use irons' Co-Op script, which gives weapons and ammo to both players if either picks any up, and prevents weapon loss on death (so items can't be destroyed in lava or slime). The script also allows one player to teleport to a destination set by themselves or their partner, in case co-op players run into a problem a solo player would have to restart for.

Tempus Irae has its own spoiler guide:

New Halo Multiplayer Experience Coming To PC

March 25th, 2015
According to Gamestop, Microsoft confirmed that the Halo multiplayer experience is heading to the PC as a free-to-play game and it is called Halo Online. Developed by Saber Interactive, the game runs on a 'highly modified' Halo 3 engine. The beta will only be available in Russia, but that doesn't necessarily rule out a release for NA or EU territories. Regardless, I'm sure some of you will find a way to play it. Microsoft also stated that they have no plans to bring Halo Online to the Xbox One. This is a pretty interesting move for Microsoft.(mastrbiggy 22:30:14 UTC)
