Podtacular 486: Hacked Revelations

May 31st, 2015

Download
Ben is just about ready to blow open ONI’s dark secrets waiting for a few more pieces to fall into place.  Wrapping up a recording session with Anthony Petrovsky’s testimony of the Spartan program, he finally gets the last bit of data he needs from Mashak to make his case.  He even goes one step further cleaning up a police report behind one of the cases where a Spartan abductee ran into his clone, which Ben decided not to use.  FERO, with her impeccable timing cuts off Mashak and get’s Ben ready to blow the story up to the UEG senators, throwing out his journalistic integrity in one fell swoop.  He manages to make it through the whole process and deliver his final testimony as FERO’s hack was curbed, but not before Sully told Ben he was done for good.  With Ben now a fugitive of ONI, out of money and lost contact with the outer colonies, we’re left to wonder what will happen to him and everyone involved with his discoveries. We also explore another possibility behind the identity of FERO thanks to an article over on Halo Archive that suggests, somewhat convincingly, that she could be Ilsa Zane, a Spartan IV washout turned Innie.

Late last night Halo players were sent download codes for the MCC version of ODST. Remember, these codes are only being sent to players who played TMCC before December 19th. For those of you who missed the deadline, you can grab a copy for $5 on the Xbox store (this is not a standalone and requires TMCC). Prepare to drop! (colindosaj 23:49:19 UTC)

Halo 3: ODST and Remnant are now available for Halo: The Master Chief Collection.  Before the release, had the chance to talk with Dan Ayoub, Executive Producer at 343 Industries, and JP Eaton, Lead Environment Artist at Certain Affinity about these additions to the collection.  As we talked with Dan, we discussed the challenges facing the team bringing Halo 3: ODST to the collection with the different campaign flow the game offered, the decision to not include Firefight, achievements we’ll see, and what changes were made to the game to make it fit with the collection.  Flipping over to Remnant, we talked with JP about the differences between Relic and Remnant, the reasoning behind choosing Relic to remake, and what new features we could expect with the map.

ASE Ep. 156 Marathon Tempus Irae 19: The Revealing Science of God

May 30th, 2015
The Revealing Science of God

Round and round we go, where we stop, nobody knows...

We're starting a new Marathon adventure-- this time fighting the Pfhor in Italy of the past in third party scenario Tempus Irae!

Tempus Irae can be played, like the other Marathon games, using the open source Aleph One engine which you can get here for Windows, Mac and Linux:

http://source.bungie.org

Tempus Irae and other third party scenarios for the Aleph One engine can be downloaded here:

http://source.bungie.org/scenarios.php#more

We use irons' Co-Op script, which gives weapons and ammo to both players if either picks any up, and prevents weapon loss on death (so items can't be destroyed in lava or slime). The script also allows one player to teleport to a destination set by themselves or their partner, in case co-op players run into a problem a solo player would have to restart for.

Tempus Irae has its own spoiler guide:

Minecraft – Introduction to Redstone

May 29th, 2015

If you have spent any length of time within the Minecraft world, you will be familiar with the common mineral, redstone. Redstone is the "wiring" in Minecraft used to connect one contraption to another, your power source within the game.

How do you get it? Naturally, of course! You can mine for redstone ore underground as with most materials in Minecraft. That ore will turn into redstone upon breaking it with an iron pickaxe or better. However, you can also acquire it from killing a witch, looting a temple in the jungle, or trading with a villager.

Once you have your redstone in hand, you are ready to experiment with its' possibilities. At the most basic level of gameplay, if you need a little portable light within the game, all it takes is redstone and a stick to craft a redstone torch. Want to provide constant light to your Minecraft home? Combine redstone and glowstone to make a lamp, keeping the darkness at bay... and all of the creatures that come with it.

Redstone is used for powering various sorts of gadgets. You'll want to be familiar with several fundamental items. In the trigger category you find buttons and levers, as well as pressure plates. Buttons send a redstone signal upon being pressed, while levers function more like light switches. A pressure plate each side of a door can allow it to open as you enter and then close behind you, triggered by your weight as you step on and off again.

Two kinds of pistons also exist in the Minecraft world: regular and sticky. Regular pistons push a block one step forward and then leaves it there, whereas sticky pistons attach to the block and can thus push or pull it. You can use those to make doors, elevators, secret entrances and so on.

Repeaters, as you might guess, repeat the redstone signal: one placed after the first fifteen blocks of redstone will extend your signal's reach for another fifteen blocks.

So, what can you do with all of these buttons, levers, pressure plates, pistons and repeaters? The sky is literally the limit. You might decide to make piston-controlled waterfalls, secret trapdoors, music machines, clocks, and even rollercoasters. If you want to get really fancy, try assembling a number of gadgets and contraptions into a Rube Goldberg Machine. Feeling lazy? Redstone can even power up automatic farming and mining machines as well.

Redstone can also enhance the brewing of potions. Combining redstone dust and a water bottle will give you the Mundane Potion, while adding the dust to a number of other potions (e.g. Potion of Night Vision, Water Breathing, or Invisibility) will increase their duration.

As you can see, redstone will provide the power source for many of your Minecraft creations and adventures. Don't be afraid to use your imagination!

While Hunt the Truth is in full swing grabbing all the attention of the lore nuts, the MCC is due for a major release in the coming days as Relic and ODST are scheduled to hit by the end of this month.  We’re still eagerly awaiting a release date, but hopefully something soon comes up.  In the meantime, there’s not much else going on in current game news, but communities are thriving and more seem to be popping up and growing.  One such community is Ultimate Halo headed up by Wangtim3.  We had him on our show previously when he was still doing his own stuff, but now he’s brought together a team of personalities generating YouTube content that covers a wide array of Halo topics.  We also did our own dramatic reading of the latest GrifballHub comic and go through our mailbag once again.
