Halo IRL: Battle Creek

July 31st, 2013

Halo is a fictional universe. However, sometimes we catch sight of things in real life that remind us of our favorite science fiction video game franchise. This particular series, titled Halo in Real Life, showcases those very moments. Enjoy the subtle Halo references sometimes spotted when out and about in the real world, and if you have a picture you'd like to submit for possible future inclusion, send it to bsangel[at]halowaypoint.com!

Project Contingency – a Fan-made Halo Game

July 31st, 2013
Getting on a plane in an hour... but before I go, a quick note. We got word from the team at Project Contingency about a fan-made Halo game built on the CryEngine 3 engine. It's not a mod for Crysis - it's a new look at the Halo universe through the lens of a different engine. There's a trailer to watch, a website, and a gallery of their work, if you want to catch up. Looking good! (Louis Wu 17:17:41 UTC)

Waypoint Weekly Test Nights: 7.31.13

July 31st, 2013

From AgentPaperCraft:

Hello, Waypoint goers! With the addition of community-made content into matchmaking, custom maps and game types have become a integral part of Halo's multiplayer experience. It keeps matchmaking fresh with all new content and game types that keep us on our toes. Forgers and game type creators often work hours, days and even months on their content before it’s considered for matchmaking, and it's usually the lack of having a ready player-base to test their maps that it takes so long. So I offer an option to our forgers, a place to bring your maps and game types to have them tested and reviewed by a group of the top forgers around. You'll receive top-notch forging tips and tricks to wow your players, improve map spawn and flow, provide a better map experience and get your name out there. You'll also get to work directly with the Community Cartographers, a select group of community Forge enthusiasts who work with 343 Industries in the search of top quality content for matchmaking consideration. Every Wednesday night at 6PM ET, get an invite by sending “AgentPaperCraft” a message over Xbox LIVE, or leave a comment in the Test Night Thread.

Join us this week as we induct the first round of our Forge mentoring program, a program where we pair you up with a veteran forger to help hone your skills creating and distributing your custom content. Your mentor will help co-forge your map, offer you a higher level of assistance in understanding dynamic map flow, spawn placement, structural design, and other important aspects of designing your custom map. For more information about the mentoring program, head over to the ForgeHub thread where you can also post your maps for review and testing.

In a strange confluence of circumstances, all three major updaters for HBO are in places (or times) where updates are nearly impossible. For the lack of Halo news coverage... we apologize. Things might get better soon!(Louis Wu 23:59:38 UTC)

This week's settings also include motion tracker enabled and personal ordnance disabled. The map variants for this week will be identical to week 1: Adrift, Abandon, Solace, Haven, Monolith, Skyline, and Landfall. Both game types will be available across the maps, with identical initial ordnance and on-map weapon locations.

As a reminder, each player has three disconnects reserved for network difficulties or disconnects each week. If players choose to use these strategically in place of a loss (i.e. an intentional quit) they run the risk of jeopardizing their average through later disconnects or network complications. Also, as mentioned prior, the leaderbaords will be investigated each week for any players suspected of cheating via network manipulation or other methods.

In Spartan Ops, we are offering a selection of Covenant enemy-themed missions. In last week's Bulletin, we "previewed" the missions for next week (oops!). Here is the current list of what available in Spartan Ops Matchmaking:

Episode 3, Mission 1: The VIP
Episode 3, Mission 2: Galileo
Episode 3, Mission 3: Spartan Mountain
Episode 3, Mission 4: Shootout in Valhalla
Episode 3, Mission 5: Hunting Trip

Lockdown in the Dominion playlist has been updated with several changes. To allow for an optimized attack / defend dynamic, motion tracker has been disabled, and auto-turrets and shield doors have been removed. These updates will make it more difficult to defend a base, and result in more back-and-forth style gameplay. Lastly, we’ve also made some updates to Legendary Slayer:

  • On Haven, the Rocket Launcher is now updated to have one spare clip instead of two.
  • On Adrift, the Spartan Lasers have been replaced by Sniper Rifles.

That'll do it for this week's Matchmaking Update. See you on the virtual battlefield!

Occasionally, we get thank-you notes from fans - and we always appreciate them. Sometimes, though, the sentiments expressed and the timing of the arrival combine to make things special - and that happened today. A fan, choosing to be known as Jon, let us know why he was happy we were around. There are times, when life gets crazy, that it's easy to forget what kept us doing this for so long... and a note like this goes a long way to helping us remember. Check it out. (For what it's worth, Stuntmutt's still around, even if it's only once in a while.)(Louis Wu 22:31:16 UTC)

You can walk all over it.

PyroSporker16 pointed out a pretty rare piece of Halo memorabilia being sold right now on eBay - it's Combat Evolved welcome mat, never used. I vaguely remember seeing one of these before - but it's definitely not a common item. Currently at just over $100, but there are still 4 days left on the auction. Check it out!(Louis Wu 22:27:32 UTC)
